Well, I think FUNNY FACE is one of the real movie musical masterpieces. (I'd rank it at the VERY top if Astaire were twenty years younger.) I think every number is staged and performed brilliantly, and the three leads are perfection. For a musical of the era, the plot's a bubble on which to hang those deliriously wonderful Gershwin tunes, and the three additions to the score by Edens and Gershe are delightful. And pictorially, I can't think of another movie that can touch it for inventiveness.

As I said last week when I first watched the new DVD, the new transfer is spectacular and puts the old one (which I always thought looked digital and ugly) in the dust bin.

If you search the forum's posts from your brief stint away from us, you'll find that I am a very staunch supporter of FUNNY FACE as well. . .

Penny the lamb should freeze nicely, just wrap it in single or double serving portions.

DR Laura-BEAUTIFUL!  That is something we don't see in Oregon.

Edi-Thanks for the cake photo.

This just in:

Sacco and Vanzetti has been selected to receive the fourteenth John O'Connor Film Award of the American Historical Association.

The 2008 AHA annual meeting is in Washington D.C. in January, and the film will be screened for more than 5,000 history professors and high-school teachers.

Hooray! Maybe we'll go!

My mother and my sister went shopping and one of the things they were looking for was a dress for one of my other sisters to wear to the wedding.

I went shopping someplace else....and saw a dress that would be perfect.  They weren't FOR SURE going to buy a dress for her....only if they found one....so....I bought the one I found.

She may end up with two.....but it is pretty....and it was on sale (no returns, you know).

This is sooo cute, and sweet.  I hope the dress is perfect.  Please let us know.

I'm going to modify this post because it is a bit snarky.  I got an email from BJ last night on whether a certain agent showed up for a performance of "The Brain." I had given his name and address to both Cason and BJ before they left LA and told them to call him, stop in and see him, or to invite him to the show.  To  my knowledge, nothing was done by either actor to get any agents or casting personnel in to the show to see them. Now the're back in LA and it's all old news, and essentially any momentum of the good reviews to find representation has been wasted.

I've tried, George, God knows I've tried!

I can relate to the "God knows I've tried" part on many issues. But, in the case of an agent, isn't it a bit of Catch-22? You use an agent because it's always easier for someone else to promote you and your work than to do it yourself. The trick is to promote yourself enough to get the agent who then promotes you. Yes?

And now der B wants to kick me off and settle into this chair himself.

Oh, well.

Jose, you sly ENABLER, you! All it took was a couple bites to get me hooked, and now I'm looking for substitutes. While doing some grocery shopping I of course succumbed. Not Levain, not expecting Levain--just something remotely resembling the Levain experience.

Elmore! Yikes, plumbing disasters... I had to have my pump repaired in June, and the whole danged house REPLUMBED in August. Then, a handyman in to do the repairs caused by the plumbing disaster AND the plumbing repairs... for example: DRYWALL REPLACEMENT... Next year, the entire house has to be re-wired. Ah the joys of home ownership - but nothing's worse that the plumbing disasters... mold, mildew, lots o' stuff to repair, once the plumbing is repaired. I feel your pain, sweetie.

I've tried, George, God knows I've tried!

I know exactly how you feel, ;D and when it is your own children it is even more difficult.   I have also learned, in spite of my being right most of the time, things still work out.   So....wonderful career vibes to Cason & BJ who should have listened to you. :)

You use an agent because it's always easier for someone else to promote you and your work than to do it yourself. The trick is to promote yourself enough to get the agent who then promotes you. Yes?

Agents will not represent you unless they've seen your work.  I suggested that Cason and BJ send info to agents in the City and even recommended they contact a personal friend.  Even if half the agents you invite don't come to the show, you've done whatever you can to have them see your work.  If they were still in Manhattan, they could work the angle of I-got-a-good-review-in-the-Times-can-I-come-talk-to-you-about-personal-representation?
Unfortunately, neither one is here to work the room and the momentum of the good press is lost.  However, the groundwork should have been done before the show opened.  If acting is your business, you have to treat it like a business. Despite stupid reality shows, no one's an overnight discovery. And those that say they were are not being honest.

Penny I haven't had monkey cake in years.  My description (couldn't find a good one on-line) is it is more like a sweet bread.  When I had it it tore apart in pieces.  It seems to have made a comeback recently & is popping up in bakeries again.

I shall shortly be on my way to rehearse with new cast members for a little tour of The Party Animals.  I finish at three (or before) after which I'll come home and figure out the fundraiser decision.  The cancellation or postponement letter is written, but I'm really hoping we can tough it out and do the damn show.

DR Jane, that is monkey bread.

Monkey Cake comes from Amy's Breads bakery in Manhattan, and looks like this:
