As for today's topic of discussion (remember the topic of discussion?)

Yes, we have one every day.  It's not binding.

DR singdaw - Umm... As much as I appreciate your posts and your research (a.k.a. Googling), I really do think you think you should do some work at work from time to time.

[A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH]

Ron, it's available. Amazon has it. So does my local video store, as I've rented it from them. And I certainly agree that it's a classic and should be seen.

Amazon.com has a Movies Unlimited DVD release of the title which, according to reader reviews, is of poor quality.

There are also Region 2 DVDs available.

I know that Columbia Classics issued a VHS of the title.  Thus far, no label has issued a DVD of it, although Columbia "announced" it back in  2004.

Chafing, perhaps.  But never binding.

Well I am not sure what these video previews for this book are - BUT my friend ZACH is featured in them as the main guy character....

Video previews for a book?  Didn't know such a thing existed.

Clicking on the second one with the Rose illustration will give you a nice look at Zach.  ;D

http://www.amazon.com/Heir-Barbara-Taylor-Bradford/dp/0312354622/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-4635991-9296953?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1192112205&sr=1-1

How neat! Maybe when they make it into a movie they will remember Zach did the book preview!

DR Elan, it's good to see you!  How's the baby?

No baby anymore... The Little One(tm) is now 2, running us ragged and making us nuts. I'm sure he'll calm down in two months, when (G-d willing, ptu ptu ptu) he becomes an older brother... :)

Last night I watched the 2001 SWEENEY TODD concert dvd....taped in San Francisco....with Mr Hearn and Ms LuPone and Mr Harris....and a lot of opera people who acted as if they were slumming....saving their breath for big POWER notes at the end of phrases....bleh.

But I liked the show, as usual....staging was not the most imaginative, but then....what DO you do when you only have a couple of rehearsals with a LOT of people AND a symphony orchestra....and television cameras.

It was quite an achievement, all in all.

The only performer I didn't like AT ALL was the Beggar Woman played by a dear friend of DR ELMORE's. - Victoria Clark.

I've also got to tackle "The Lodger" sometime this weekend.  Possibly I'll even watch "The Undying Monster."

By the by....if any of you out there is a fan of "A Matter of Life and Death"  (aka "Stairway to Heaven"), TCM is airing it later this month.  It's either Oct. 22nd or 24th.  I've already set my DVR to pick it up, so I don't know the actual date off the top of my head.

If you don't know it, you OWE IT TO YOURSELF to see it.  It's one of cinema's great serious fantasies, and it stars David Niven and Kim Hunter.

In a nutshell (from the IMDb):

Returning to England from a bombing run in May 1945, flyer Peter Carter's plane is damaged and his parachute ripped to shreds. He has his crew bail out safely, but figures it is curtains for himself. He gets on the radio, and talks to June, a young American woman working for the RAF, and they are quite moved by each other's voices. Then he jumps, preferring this to burning up with his plane. He wakes up in the surf. It was his time to die, but there was a mixup in heaven. They couldn't find him in all that fog. By the time his "Conductor" catches up with him 20 hours later, Peter and June have met and fallen in love. This changes everything, and since it happened through no fault of his own, Peter figures that heaven owes him a second chance. Heaven agrees to a trial to decide his fate.

It is a 1946 Michael Powell-Emeric Pressburger film.

It's not currently available on video, and infrequent airings on TV are the only other source for it of which I know.

For those with multi-region players, it is indeed available on DVD in a decent transfer from the UK.  A great movie.

Dear all Haines and Kimlets:

Last night when I returned home from work and went to pick up my mail from the last several days; I found a postcard from NYC with many of the New York gangs' signatures.

I am so touched and honored that you thought of me in that way and that you took the time to sign the card and send it to me.

I really wish that I could have been there,

Thank you all again.

It really means a lot to me.

 :D

Actually, the region 2 A Matter Of Life And Death is pretty good now that I think of it - especially considering it came out aroun 1999 or thereabouts.  The source material is in excellent condition, but technology for transfers is much better now and when they get around to redoing it (which they will) it will be great.
