well, a general hell to everybody from way downunder!

watched "de-lovely" last night. thought the performances were wonderful, as well as the general construction of the film ... so glad they did not use the original ending. also thought it a nice touch that there was a momentary tribute to "night and day" in it.

regrettably the film was treated as an 'art house' release here, so it did not get the large audiences it deserves.

Got both DVDs watched this afternoon. I first saw BUTLEY in my early 20s as a recent college graduate working on my master's degree, and I remember at the time finding the character of Ben Butley irritating and infuriating.

Amazing now that I'm a retired teacher and much, much older that I see him for the monster he actually was. I think at such a young age I wasn't fully capable of realizing how monstrous he was to one and all. I laughed more than I cringed at his treatment of his students and to those who were close to him in his personal life. I found nothing amusing watching it today. Oh, I admired the wit behind the sarcasm and word play, but it was so cruel, so vile that I couldn't laugh. I was appalled.

Theatre is magic, DR TCB - one way or another. And it's live! Yup, that's what the audience is there for....to see it done live....in the same room. And who's to say....Branch surely didn't do his lines as written!

Yes DRCP - Half Price Books aka Half Price Books and Records is part of the chain you mention. There is one in Greenwood south of Indy and in Fishers just north of Indy. It's fun - especially the books that sell for 25 cents and 50 cents. I always fill up a basket there first. Also found a first edition of ATLAS SHRUGGED there and with a 15% off coupon I had, got it for $35!! Great place for travel books and picture books and books on movies and television and bios and art books. OMG - now I have to go there.

DR TCB, we have all been through that kind of torturous performance, so I know how you felt, and with the playwright there, I'm sure you were embarrassed, but don't worry about it. It's history now, and you have other performances to rectify things.

I love that moment in the COMPANY documentary where Susan Browning, I believe, says that performances are in the moment and then they're gone and you get to do it again. Only recordings are permanent. Same rationale here.

THE GREAT WHITE HOPE looked fine (though some scenes had that same brown tint that was present in STAR! Can't remember if the film was done that way or not. It's been too long since I saw it at the theater.)

Fox did give each version (full screen and widescreen) its own side of the flipper disc, but stupidly put the proper one - the widescreen enhanced one - on side B.

I wanted to mention that thanks to DR Mbarnum, I discovered my favorite candy/chocolate ever ... peanut butter m&ms. They are not sold everywhere here. But if you look you can find them. They are so unbelievably good.

I did notice peanut butter smarties at one store. I wonder if they are equally good (smarties here are similar to m&ms but a bit wider, like if you pounded an m&m).

I'm going on a diet/exercise regime on monday. So i must get in some good eating before then.

Boy, ozderek and I live in entire different movie-worlds. I hated, loathed, every frame of DeLovely. They really tried here in the States, but unfortunately most people here were apathetic or felt as I did.

I'm back from my travels. Went to Pasadena but not Sierra Madre, because I couldn't get anyone to confirm whether my magazines were in or not. In Pasadena, I visited my old pal John Mitchell at Mitchell Books, a used mystery store. I gave him a Writer's Block and we had fun catching up.

I also did not like DE-LOVELY at all. The music was not well served, there were so many factual errors with song and character placements in the story that I was constantly being taken out of the movie to comment on something I found fictional or anachronistic. I also did not like the framing device at all.

Hi all!

The title of today's notes is the name of a flower that I have in my garden. It starts out blue and turns white as the day goes one. It smells wonderful.

I'm still turning the trip over in my mind. Just so you know, MR BK, I had a nightmare last night about buying coats. I went from store to store to try to get them but they ran out just as I got there!

Then I had a nicer dream about Michael Ball.

I see that DR Panni has decided to make the trip as well as DR Michael. So where are you planning on staying?

TCB, I'm sure that what you consider your worst is better then a lot of peoples best. I wish I could make the trip to see your play as well. Some day I will go to the left coast.

Re: Delovely, I have not seen the movie as of yet, but I did hear some of Kevin Spacey's singing and was actually very impressed. I may pick up the soundtrack. As for the movie itself, well I haven't heard anything good about it, but then that never stopped me from liking a movie. LOL!

Tonight my buddies and I are supposed to go out and celebrate our friend Mark's birthday. Last night, and early this morning, we had freezing rain. Things, here in Salem anyway, have thawed out, but the news reports say that we are to get it again this evening...and yet my friends are still planning to go out tonight in Portland (which got it much worse then Salem).....so, I guess I will be creeping up I-5 to meet them and hopefully not get caught in an ice storm (otherwise I guess I will be spending the night in Portland because I ain't gonna drive in it!).

Oh, you are right...it is BEYOND THE SEA that I am thinking of. So was it not any good either? I still enjoyed Spacey's singing.

Yes, Portland is one solid sheet of ice, and it is getting colder. The icecicles have stopped dripping and there is a ferocious wind blowing now. Call us if you need a place to crash (as in sleep, if you're planning on crashing your car, keep that on I-5 please).

Back from work. It is freezing rain around here, but it's supposed to be a lot warmer tomorrow, so all should be well.

I'm still feeling a tiny bit under the weather...a bit stuffy, bit of a sore throat...I'm gonna take it easy for the rest of the weekend, hopefully I'll be well by Monday. I'm having some couscous and Yogi tea, which is supposed to boost your immune system.
