A lot of my favorite sports movies have been mentioned, so I will mention them again:

SLAPSHOT - so funny with good performances by everyone

EIGHT MEN OUT - kinda long and boring, but I was in it for a second

Two Robby Benson movies:  ICE CASTLES and ONE ON ONE

I think BANG THE DRUM SLOWLY was a television drama first and then a movie.

HOOSIERS for obvious reasons.

THREE WISHES which has a Little League subplot.  One of my favorite movies of ANY kind.

Here is your Allison Hayes Picture of the Week!  It is 1955 and she is backing her car out of the garage of the house that DRJAY photographed for me last summer.  As he will confirm, that is no small feat!   ;D

DR Jane, I can get you as many delicous egg bagels as you may wish, there is a lovely bagel bakery one block from my home.

When my best friend was in the in the Airforce and stationed in Nebraska she yearned for a good Jewisg Rye, so I would buy them, freeze them , wrapped them in Foil and then plastic backs and send them to her by express mail when they arrived they had defrosted during the trip and were as fresh as when I bought them from the bakery .

I would be happy to do the same for you.  They also sometimes have egg and bacon bagels, and I can also get rye, pumpernickel, etc...tell me your pleasure and I will see if I can accomadate you!!

From today's NY Times obituary of Thelma White, who "played a hard-boiled blonde named Mae who peddles "demon weed" to unsuspecting young people in REEFER MADNESS."

A musical and comedy actress who made more than 40 movies, Ms. White was horrified when RKO Studios picked her for the antidrug film. But because of her contract, she had little choice but to accept the role.

"I'm ashamed to say that it's the only one of my films that's become a classic," she told The Los Angeles Times in an interview in 1987. "I hide my head when I think about it."

DR Jose,

The movie you are looking for is titled DEVDAS. I have not seen it but I understand it is quite good. I don't care too much for the lead actor in it so I have not searched it out...but eventually I will probably watch it.

You can order it from www.indiaweekly.com or perhaps even Netflix.

From the box my iPod mini (blue, of course) came in:

"Windows Requirements - PC with FireWire or USB 2.0 card; Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or later, or Windows XP Home or Professional"

I'm not sure what all that means, DR MBarnum, but I think it means that you don't have to have an Apple computer in order to use an iPod.

Very Happy Birthday to DR Charles Edward Pogue!!

I've never been a sports fan.  Last year, my niece had me take her to some Seattle Storm women's basketball games (she's a fanatic!) and I've thoroughly enjoyed going to those.  But I have no interest in watching any other sports.  As for sports movies, I'm not specifically a fan of the genre, but these are the ones that I like very much...and can think of, although all have already been mentioned ::) (in alphabetical order, of course):

The Bad News Bears
The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training
Bend It Like Beckham
Breaking Away
Chariots of Fire
Hoosiers
Ice Castles
A League of Their Own

There was also a made-for-TV movie that I only saw part (and can't remember the title) of that was about the first modern Olympics.  My sister loves this movie.  The only part that I can remember was about the discus throwers.  They had practiced in America but didn't really know what they were doing.  When they got to Greece, some Greek women had to show them how to throw it correctly.  Anyway, when they're at the actual competition, they are handed the official Olympic-sized discus and it turns out that it's so much smaller and lighter than what they'd been using!  They had made their discus with the weight in pounds but didn't realize that the specifications that they were sent had been in kilograms!  They won very easily.  That's the only part that I can remember.

Today at work, I will not be at work!  Our library system (where I work) is getting an entirely new computer system!  They took the old computers off-line Sunday night at 8:00 p.m. and they won't be back up until noon tomorrow.  Today, one of the selectors has to go to Seattle and asked if I wanted to go too.  I said, "yes!"  So I'm going to Seattle...I'm getting paid to go on a field trip!  So, have a good day, all!

TOD: There was a film made in the 50s about golfer Ben Hogan that I liked when I was a kid, but I can't think of the title...also enjoyed IT HAPPENED IN ATHENS which revolves around the Olympics in Greece.

As for my favorite sports...diving, bodybuilding, bowling, hmmmm...I guess that is about it...I do enjoy looking at the football players, but don't really enjoy the sport.

When I was in undergraduate school, I had to take Personal and Community Health to gain my teacher's license. During that course, we had to pick a sport and write a term paper on some phase of it. Because I was such a movie buff, I chose boxing because there had been SO many movies in which boxing was featured, and I had seen many of them either at the movies or on TV.

May seem strange coming from the likes of a Broadway baby like me, but as I thought about the films (and read about them to do additional research, Manny Farber's excellent essay "Fight Films" was a major source of information), I gained a tremendous amount of respect for men who chose to earn their living doing this. It's not an easy life.

Anyway, I thought then and I still think now that the finest boxing movie ever made is THE HARDER THEY FALL, Bogart's last movie. I honestly like it better than ROCKY or RAGING BULL (neither of which had been made when I wrote that term paper). It contains the fewest cliches, tells a very interesting and involving number of stories about fascinating people, and contains some riveting performances from Bogart, Rod Steiger, Jan Sterling, and Mike Lane as the tragic boxer who's too naive to know what's happening to him. I also like THE SET-UP, a Tony Curtis programmer THE SQUARE JUNGLE, and CHAMPION (Kirk Douglas' first Oscar nominated performance).

As for other sports, my favorite films about them:

baseball - *61 (love PRIDE OF THE YANKEES, too)

football - BRIAN'S SONG (the original; liked NORTH DALLAS FORTY, too, and ANY GIVEN SUNDAY)

basketball - THE ABSENT MINDED PROFESSOR

hockey - SLAP SHOT

I guess my favorite sport is figure skating, but I haven't liked any of the movies in which it was featured.

Hmmmm, sports-themed movies
.

My favorite would have to be HEAVEN CAN WAIT (The Warren Beatty version).  I realize that sports are really only a secondary theme in the film; but, hey, football is football.  Other sports films would be:

THE NATURAL
FIELD OF DREAMS
ICE CASTLES
DAMN YANKEES
TAKE DOWN (1979) Lorenzo Lamas and Edward Herrmann
BRIAN'S SONG (TV)

In no particular order:

  • Happy Birthday, DR Pogue!
  • MBarnum et al: the iPod is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows machines.
  • Sports movies: It's been a long time since I've seen any of these, but I remember enjoying Eight Men Out, Field of Dreams, The Natural, and A League of Their Own when I saw them.
Oh, and the combination of Clint Eastwood and Bruce in chiffon made me think of this:
