I am so glad that people have mentioned Breaking Away. I really didn't think anyone would mention it.

Slap Shot is one of the best hockey films and a look at era when there was "goon hockey" which doesn't exist anymore. Actually the NHL doesn't exist right now.

Are gladiators considered a sport?

Then how about Spartacus or Gladiator?

Frances Farmer wrote (or didn't) in her autobiography:

To many of my generation, as in succeeding ones, the theories of Konstantin Stanislavski, known as the Method, stood for total, meaningful theatre.  The real core of the Method was reality and absolute involvement.   It ripped aside the frills and brought to  the footlights the torn sweat shirt and the worn strumpet.  It had to be real, and according to the standards, you had to feel and experience it before you could act it.

We were young, and we took the Method to heart, and if our characters were sleeping together, we slept together.  If homosexuality was involved in a characterization, we were likewise involved, for how could you act what you had not experienced?

The Method became a moving force in the theater, but we were the first in its throes on a university level. [University of Washington in Seattle in the early 1930's under the tutelage of Sophie Rosenstein]  We were the newborn.  We were not afraid.  We acted and reacted. We had nothing to live up to , for we were the embryos.  Within a walled city, we were alive, bringing everything else to life.  But we went too far.  We were too enraptured.  Too concerned.  And we lost control.  It was a raw and dangerously uninhibited world, and to some it became a deadly game of self-destruction.

The next sound you'll hear is DRMBarnum having a stroke (I hope that's a stroke I'm listening to)!

Did anyone mention "Kansas City Bomber" as a sports movie?????

While I was visiting my mom (and she gets the Fox Movie Channel), I saw "It Happenedin Athens"...and it was about the Olympics.  It starred Jayne Mansfield and Trax Colton.

I couldn't help but think of MBarnum when I saw that name pop up on the screen....sounds like someone right up his alley!

Whew!  Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana - in outlining his plan to get  us out of this fiscal crisis - just asked that all citizens making over $100,000 be subject to a one-time 1% special income tax this year.  Oh my!

Shortly I will be on my way to do a few things that need doing, then meeting up with the Birthday Boy for his Birthday Dinner.

The good news is that the Pool People will be here Friday afternoon to put a new pump and motor in.  Therefore, if the weather holds and is gloriously glorious, I shall be in the Jacuzzi Friday evening and the pool on the weekend.

Let's name some obscure BAD movies that other DR's might not have seen, so that we can increase our libraries.

I will start with an easy one JUBILEE TRAIL with Miss Vera Ralston!

Well, if DRTCB doesn't, DRDTM certainly does.  I meant a stroke, like a heart attack?  My grandmother had a stroke.  It killed her.  Well, actually I think my uncle killed her, but she had a stroke.  It struck us bloody murder.  Oh, God, now I sound like Alice Toklas.

How about Roger Corman's Fantastic Four movie?  It was so bad that Marvel bought back the rights and it was never officially released.  But video copies have managed to be widely circulated.  You could probably pick up a copy at your local comic book store.

DtM didn't even know that movie existed.  Is it as bad as Corman's ATLAS?

DR ELMORE thanks for the CD!

DRJRand54, you are most certainly welcome.  I hope you are enjoying it.  Ann Southern sings better than I remembered she did.  I saw Carlton Carpenter play Cornelius to Mary Martin's Dolly in the first national tour of HELLO, DOLLY! and he was quite wonderful.  I certainly couldn't tell you the rest of the cast.

Has anyone else got this new Theatermania Guide to musical theater recordings?  Some of their gaps surprise me, like missing British recordings of some shows such as the London cast of THE SOUND OF MUSIC from 1962 or so and the London CD of HALF A SIXPENCE.

I'm not sure I ever had the pleasure of seeing Atlas.  I just read it's entry on IMDB.  Sounds intriguing, particularly the epic battle scenes.
