Back to the 1991 BEN-HUR a second.

Watching it now for the first time on this particular TV, I can see that while there are no artifacts or print damage, the image isn't exactly razor sharp. It's clear; it's fine, but compared to recent DVDs, I have seen sharper images.

To my ears, the sound seems full and expansive. I can't imagine what they might have done to improve the sound field unless they just cranked up the volume or perhaps added more bass. My subwoofer was rumbling plenty with the appraoch of the legions.

However, I haven't gotten to the slave galley sequence yet, so maybe that's not "up to snuff," as they say. I seem to remember watching this some eyars ago that it sounded great to my ears, but that's coming up on the DVD.

Well, the Tacoma News Tribune theatre critic can't stand the play Charley's Aunt, citing a "script that should have been destroyed at least 50 years ago" in which the "jokes are stale and the plot weak," but admits that our "stellar cast...elicited an almost endless stream of guffaws."  And apparently I'm "lovable as Jack."  I'll take it.

FROM "THE POWER OF THE PEN" DEPARTMENT:

Quote
The column (in the UNC Daily Tar Heel) began with the line, "I want all Arabs to be stripped naked and cavity-searched if they get within 100 yards of an airport."

"I wanted to get people talking," (the columnist) said. "I did that. It also got me fired."

Gee, I can't imagine why?

Well, very soon I'll be headed down to do that awful Friday chore - mopping the kitchen floor. I cleaned the counters earlier today, so the mopping is all that's left.

I am going to watch the two hour series premiere of THRESHOLD on CBS tonight. Before it begins at 9 p.m., I'll probably continue with BEN-HUR and save TIME BANDITS for tomorrow.

Veronica Mars Season One Finale spoiler.

DR MattH, who did you think was the killer?  And who do you think is at the door?

For some reason someone I know was convinced the killer was Leann (V's mom).  As for who is at the door, I can only think of 3 people: logan, duncan or wallace.  My guess would be wallace.  But I did read a posting from someone who apparently saw Season 2 episode one. And he/she said something like "who is at the door is not necessarily who veronica would want to see". Whatever that means.

I guess it could be Wievel too.

Did you see the preview for season two? Something about logan.

Well, I should not be surprised the jokes seem stale - the play was written 113 years ago! The critic reminds me of a high-school classmate that that was complaining the Shakespeare was a hack writer. When challenged by the prof to defend his view point, he proudly declaimed -"He uses trite phrases like "Something is rotten in Denmark".

A world-wide audience of over a 100 years can't be all wrong!

MattH, I'm sure you mean 1999 or 2001 Ben-Hur DVD - DVD didn't exist in 1991.

I will be posting my thoughts on the new DVD in tomorrow's notes.  Briefly, I will say that despite the nincompoops complaining on various chat boards, the image is MUCH improved, breathtakingly so.  These nincompoops simply have no idea what they are talking about, but they are, of course, youngsters who have become armchair experts because they have a big screen and have seen a few DVDs and have picked up the ridiculous lingo.

Miss Tammy Minoff and I had a lovely lunch featuring the cuisine of Mexico.  She was wearing a tiny little skirt, and as we went into the restaurant a man ogled her and said "nice skirt."  The subtext was "nice skirt and can I go out with you tonight."

MBarnum, I am enjoying the Peanuts. I like that they do a version of "The Peanut Vendor".
It seems MBarnum wishes to spread peanuts across the world.  An enjoyable CD.

Australia on Big Brother:  WE ARE NOT AMUSED!

Quote
THE broadcasting watchdog has found two episodes of reality program Big Brother breached the industry code by screening sexual antics, nudity and foul language.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority ordered Channel 10 to clean up its act.

The probe found the two late-night shows breached the code by showing material too offensive for its MA classified show.

MA is the strongest rating for free-to-air programs, and must be suitable for 15-year-olds.

The breaches came from an episode in which Michael gave a female housemate a massage with his penis exposed, and another episode in which the male housemates sang about fetishes and degrading sexual acts.

der Brucer - And just what have you people been watching!!!!!

I have seen only one fluff strand thus far, but it was really just an errant thread on someone's tunic, or was it someone's jonathan tunic?

Tom, got the package today, thanks much.

I hope the presence of Brent Spiner will get Woody to give it a try.

I agree with bk regarding BEN-HUR; tonight it's back to the galleys for the battle at sea and what lies beyond that. . .

Sound-wise, it's only slightly more centered than the previous edition; Miriam still has directional dialogue at one point. . .

I think the purchase was well worth the double dip.
The documentary on Disc Four, the new one, is better than those put out by the bugaboo of dvd, Laurent Somethingorother.
