Good morning, all! Tom Murray should be back from London this morning so we'll begin our last trek to the wilds of Toyland and finish up this score. My editorial notes are spreading out all over my desktop as I work on various sections: i've finished the Preface, the History, and the Acknowledgements which need some fine-tuning. I've begun the section on the score,with sidetrips to various orchestrators and the papers used in the composition, and I have yet to begin Sources, Editorial Method, and then put it all together.

This morning I've got some post office errands, and laundry this afternoon. I've still got to deliver that tax info to my accountant. Yesterday, when I stopped by the office to drop the materials off, the office was locked and no one there, That will teach me to show up without calling first!

VCR: Hopefully, I'll have some time to drag out a couple of favorite Christmas shows that I have taped on VHS and copy them over to DVD.

I watched Oprah on Letterman last night. Well actually I've been waking up every night at 3am cause of my throat. So I watched it then. I really liked it. My favorite part was at the end of the interview (she was wearing a beautiful brown gown for the COLOR PURPLE opening) he walked her across the street and escorted her to the Opening. It was so nice!

Re: last night's APPRENTICE.

DR Cillalize I loved Alla and there was no way that she deserved to go last night. She has been exceptional up until now. And I actually thought she was one of Trump's favorites. IMO last night Felisha was a witch. She was bossing Alla around (when I bet they would have won if Alla had been the PM).

It just made me so mad because Turmp usually gives people a second chance. Especially people that have only made one small mistake. He has given Rebecca and Randal many chances. I think it was more Alla's attitude in the boardroom that pissed him off.

Btw, DR George, I know hate is a strong word. But I was really mad. Felisha was the weakest player left (Carolyn even said so). But Alla was the strongest. Mr. Trump lets us get invested in people, and then makes ridiculous decisions. This was huge.

Anyhow Rebecca has been my fav since Day 1. But I think Randall saved her last night. If he hadn't taken her aside then I think things would have been bad for them.

DR TPunk, yes ALIAS is moving to Wednesdays at 10pm after LOST. So it will be on this Wednesday December 7th at 10pm. I think that timeslot is much better than Thursdays at 8pm.

And I just read that Ben and Jen2 had their girl yesterday and her name is Violet.

So what kinds of reviews has THE COLOR PURPLE gotten overall? DR Jason mentioned one TV review that gave it 6 out of 10. What else?

I haven't read the VARIETY review yet, but I'm headed there now to read it.

Mornin'...

I called in from work today. I'm a little stuffy, so I'm resting up to avoid catching a full-fledged cold. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

THE COLOR PURPLE has received mixed reviews from most of the reviews I've read. I expected as much. Most of them said the same thing I did - they rushed through an epic story...they needed to take a little more time to flesh out the parts of the story that make us care about the characters. I still think it's a very good show and I will see it again.

Speaking of shows, DR Ben and I saw Ms. Chita Rivera's show last night on the Broad Way. It's always amazing to see true legends do what they do and I was thrilled to see Ms. Rivera again. She's got such a presence onstage...and she sounds exactly as she has for the last 40 years. I couldn't help but have an overwhelming sense of sadness, though. Or maybe disappointment. I dunno what it was exactly, but I felt it. It's that feeling you get when you see someone doing what they were known for doing, but not doing it nearly as well. Granted, the woman is in her 70's, and you have to give her credit for dancing bits and pieces of "America" and the Dance at the Gym, but you couldn't help but wonder (and I'm sure many in the audience actually had witnessed) how she'd danced it when she was in her prime. I didn't get that feeling with Elaine Stritch's show - she's still able to do what she's known for doing - but Ms. Rivera's not and it was sort of sad to see her really working hard to do only 1/4 of what she used to be able to do with little effort at all. It's like comparing Julie Andrews' voice in her "Mary Poppins" and "Sound of Music" days to now. It's still her, but it's not the same. Still, Chita's got a lot of style and she owned the stage, so I guess that's what counts. I'm curious to know what DR Ben's thoughts are...

And now I'm off to rent a couple of movies.

Last night, pre-"Survivor:Guatemala:, I watched "March of the Penguins."

Gorgeous photography, wonderful music and an amazing story.

And, of course, the requisite sadness that reaches out at each stage of the mating/birthing ritual as life fails to take hold because of the inclement conditions under which it is conceived.

Post-"Survivor:Guatemala", I watched the Julie Andrews version of "Cinderella." Was I mistakenly hearing this Chapin fellow (of the R-H Organization) say the show was filmed in color?

Where the frell is the color master and why didn't they use it?

'morning. It's a sunny, but very cold, Friday here in SW Ohio. Today is my day off, because I work tomorrow (usually I have the prior Monday, but there was an "important" meeting this week, so my day off got moved). It actually worked out OK, since I called in sick yesterday and Richard and I are going to a 7pm concert at Miami University this evening.

Media report:

DVD - Desperate Housewives, season 1; watched the first 4 episodes yesterday and I'm hooked!

CD(car) - When I go out to do errands soon, I'm going to start listening to Christmas music - maybe it'll help me get in a holiday mood.

VCR - We'll tape tonight's Dateline, which is supposed to be all about Peter Jackson and the new King Kong movie. DS Rob will want to see it, I'm sure.

The color master for the Julie Andrews CINDERELLA has been MIA for many years. This version that we've been watching all these years, of course, was a kinescope of the production filmed off a studio monitor while the show was being broadcast live. The monitors were, sad to say, B&W monitors.

The R&H Organization and CBS both have searched the globe on the off chance the color telecast would turn up somewhere, but it doesn't seem to exist any more.

Media: CD: the Piaf cum Janis Joplin of Brasilian chanteuses, Elis Regina.

DVD: been switching back and forth between Kingdom of Heaven, Christie's Tommy & Tuppence and DVD-Rs of my kids that we've been making with our handy dandy new DVD recorder.

MattH--this tv evidently doesn't do so well with progressive scan. I get a blank screen about every 5 minutes or so, though the sound continues. I really notice no difference between progressive and interlaced so I'm leaving it on interlaced which seems to work fine.

One of the reasons that CINDERELLA was remade in 1965 with Lesley Ann Warren was to get a color version on videotape. Of course, they changed the show from the original - in some ways to the good (adding "Loneliness of Evening" for the wonderful Stuart Damon) - and in some ways not (losing the King and Queen's song and patter.)

Just a short time later, shows were being videotaped in color like AN EVENING WITH FRED ASTAIRE. Too bad CINDERELLA couldn't have aired just a year later.

If your TV has a good interlacer, you may not need the progressive scan aspect of the DVD. Be sure you have your 3:2 pulldown turned on. Different TVs call it different things. Mine calls it "Natural Cinema" which I leave turned on rather than on auto. (But I also have progressive scan on the DVD players turned on, too.)
