Got an e-mail from Hildy's new family:

Mike,

Sorry not to get back to you first thing this morning.  I am a little slow today.

Brent loves Hildy!  We had her in the car when we picked him up from his buddies.  We told him that his present was in there and would he like to open it early.  Of course he said yes!  He got in the car and immediately had tears in his eyes.  He was speechless.  He was thrilled.

Hildy had a great time in the snow.  She is a great dog.  She even ate last night.  We cheated by putting some canned food in.  She hadn't eaten until last night.  Thanks so much.

Pam

It made me very happy!

That's great!!  Very good choice on new owners! ;D

MattH. What kind of DVD  recorder to you have?  How do you edit the commercials out... do you have to pysically start and stop the machine at the commercials or does the DVD recorder automatically read some kind of signal and do it for you?

Once you record on the DVD is it permanent or can you  record over it?

I have a Panasonic DVD recorder which also includes a hard drive inside as well as a DVD player/recorder mechanism. So I can edit two ways. I can sit there manually and put the machine on pause when a commercial comes on and then hit pause again to restart the recording, or I can record the whole thing onto the hard drive of the recorder, fast forward to each commercial and hit start and stop and then delete and edit out commercials that way. Then, I hit one button to dub the finished product onto a DVD-R. The DVD I did for you, I just edited it manually since I was watching the show anyway.

You can record over and over again on some kinds of DVDs (DVD-RWs or DVD-RAMs) but not DVD-Rs. They are one time only recordings.

Matt, I found out that this TV does the 3:2 pulldown automatically.  Unfortunately it also has some (relatively minor) glitch where the sleep timer occasionally turns on by itself.  I'll see if I can live with it, if not, back to the store for the second time.

That's a strange glitch. Did your other one do that?

I've been wondering if this is something we want to buy or if we should wait a while since we still haven't (and probably won't until forced to) upgraded to HDTV

I can tell you that if you don't have Tivo or another type of DVR, these recorders with hard drives are the next best thing and much better than a VCR for recording. Of course, if you only do occasional recording, they wouldn't be worth it, but if you record more than occasionally, the quality and convenience of instant commercial skip (three presses of the commercial skip button and you're back with the show you recorded) is very nice.

These machines have also become much more attractive price wise. The machine I have is more than $200 cheaper than it was when I bought it (with added features and a bigger hard drive).

I'm here -- I've just had nothing interesting to say.

Glad to hear the show went well. Wishing  Mr. Haines (one of my favorite singers) broken legs!

It is term-paper season for DR Sandra. Most days she doesn't even come near the internet.

Blech. Cold and snowing here in Baltimore. We do have delicious crabcakes, however.

DR Elmore, good luck on your procedure. Fun times, huh?

Rodzinski, Danise, Jennifer--good health vibes to all of you. Sorry to learn that you've not been well.

Break a leg, BK, tonight.
But not your balloons.

The best fish I ever had was when DR MusicGuy made salmon and when he made lobster bisque.

I have the back door open to let in the nice cool air, and the pigeons keep sauntering in the house.

Vibes for DR Elmore. I haven't had the pleasure of such a test yet. But my much older sister says that the test isn't as bad as the prep is.

Yes, the prep is worse than the test, IMHO. I had one this year and drinking that chalky liquid is difficult, and then living by the toilet for a few hours and eating nothing but liquids and no colored things like grape juice or red jello is also tiresome.

More later.

My Grandmother's Scalloped Oysters

1 pint Fresh Oysters
16 saltine Crackers crushed
1/2 cup Butter
Salt and Pepper
approximately 2 cups Milk

Grease 2 qt Casserole with butter-crumble (not too fine) an inch of crackers - Sprinkle with pepper. Add oysters and oyster liquor (the juice that comes with the oysters) - season with salt and pepper - Pour melted butter. Reserve 2 tablespoon for top. Cover with another inch of cracker crumbs pour rest of butter on top.  Pour milk into the mixture around edge - give time to absorb the milk allowing it to come within ½ " of top. Place in cold place for at least 2 hours then let stand at room temp about 20 minutes before baking. 30-45 minutes @ 350 degrees

I'm so far away from the tastes of a few other Hainsies it seems.

Polar Express:  No heart and soul. The "Eyes" really were annoying. All clever CG but no impact on me!
My favourite of the new gernation type animations is still "Monsters Inc" with its inventive story line.

Madagascar: the penguins were fine - not much else that wasn't laboured!

Shark Tale: Story was just not good enough.

War Of The Worlds: an effects laden nothing (In fact much of it seemed quite silly!). I much prefer the "Audio" take on the Wells story by Jeff Wayne and friends.

But then I don't like E.T. either.

On the other hand "A.I." almost works.

LOTR still towers above so much.

We were ridiculously busy at work today, so I didn't have a chance to post.

Gypsy of the Year was fun. Nothing spectacular, but fun. Makes me miss acting.

That's all for now.

The local satellite companies charge even more than the cable guys do, and from what some of neighbors (who have satellite) say.. the system is constantly "going down " when it snows or rains or is excessively windy.....

Just watched most of the film "99 and 44/100 per cent Dead" on the Fox movie channel in fine letterbox. Great comic-book credits with cool Mancini opening tune. It's one of those incoherent 70s curiosities I seem to enjoy to some degree. Somewhere between dark comedy and straight Bond meets Dirty Harry kind of mishmash directed by Frankenheimer. Richard Harris as an unlikely heartthrob. Bradford Dillman channeling Jerry Lewis. Plot gone AWOL about a third of the way in (or 33 and 33/100 of the way in). Kooky.
Coming on again in a couple hours for those who missed it.

DR Jennifer - If you purchase canned minced clams, they're chopped up pretty fine.

My mother, and I in turn, made great clam dip.
