The swimming pools in Indiana are surrounded by cornfields.

My big Amazon box of goodies came today (a big surprise), and I opened the Disney oddities tin first.

These are the one-shot cartoons that were not a part of a series of films (although some of the silent ALICE cartoons are part of the package).

Anyway, I jumped immediately to my three favorite cartoons on the first disc. "Lambert the Sheepish Lion" was in great shape, looked great, and the mono sound was excellent.

I wish I could say as much for the other two I watched.

Mine are due in today, too...UPS tracking says they're "out for delivery."

Alas, UPS seldom gets here before 4 p.m.

I have a 3:30 p.m. doctor's appointment and won't be back today...so...maybe they'll be waitin' for me in the morning.

Next came "Ben & Me," one of my all-time favorite Disney cartoons and, according to Leonard Maltin who does the (too lengthy) introductions on the disc (which you can't skip over), it's one of his favorites, too.

Anyway, sad to say that though the short looked and sounded fine, they've once again used the remapped version of the short without the original ending but with a made for home video ending that isn't as satisfying, to me anyway.

Worst of all was "Toot, Whistle, Plunk, and Boom," Disney's first Cinemascope and stereophonic short.

First, the widescreen image has not been enhanced for widescreen televisions, so it doesn't look as good as it could have looked. Even worse, the stereophonic sound has been mishandled horribly and in an attempt to run it through the surround channels have managed to screw it up terribly with voices fading in and out, the right channel almost silent like its pitch has been turned down to a whisper. The sound is very directional in this short, so that makes for an impossible listening experience.

I was almost convinced I had blown a speaker except I ran a sound test to make sure all the channels were active and the speakers were working.

DR Ron, when you get yours, I hope you'll watch this short through your system to see if it's as bad as what I was hearing today.

Either I've got a defective copy of the disc (hard to believe since the other two shorts played with no sound problems) or Disney dropped the ball badly on this one.

After the disappointing experience with the Disney tin (I didn't try the second disc which has some other favorites: "Pigs Is Pigs" and "A Symposium on Popular Song"), I went back to my Season 10 of FRIENDS to get some laughs via the second disc. Hilarious.

Got to the episode where Joey appears on the $100,000 Pyramid and stopped it since it's my favorite episode of the season (except for the final episode.) I'll watch it later tonight.

Well, POO.  First Fox screws up the Todd-AO "Oklahoma" and now Disney screws up some of the features on the new tins.

Too much product being released with too little care and effort behind them.

Well, as I said, I will be curious to see if your equipment reacts the same way to the stereophonic sound on "Plunk, Whistle, et al."

I skipped these releases, but hopefully we will get SPIN & MARTY season two with Annette....and the serial ANNETTE, too, sooner or later!

Have to agree about Maltin's intros.  Wish they could be skipped.

Just read the review of the new KING KONG on the VARIETY website.

It's a measured rave. Measured because the film is 3 hours and 7 minutes long. Takes 70 minutes just to get to Kong. But once there, awewsome doesn't begin to describe it.

The reviewer is predicting LORD OF THE RINGS size grosses and thinks it might even rival TITANIC grosses.

I still remember the title of one episode of ANNETTE - it had something to do with a lost necklace....and Annette and Roberta Shore were head to head....when the announcer broke:

Tune in next time for: "Almost A Hairpulling Fight!"

Effie's song "I'm Not Going" is terrific (even though Jennifer Holiday's diction gets onto my nerves) - however it is NOT the first act curtain.

After the song there is a short scene with the new Dreams - with Effie nowhere in sight....she may sing "I'm not...." but she did.....

Every advance anyone makes in that show is through a bad or dirty deal.   They sing a song about love and family and then they kick her out.  She sings a song about staying and then she goes.  It's one wacky show!

I can hardly wait for the movie!  You can have RENT!!

Yea, a ferris wheel and a roller coaster!  And free drinks.  Indiana's Holiday World and Water Park -  :P

They changed the name because a couple of years ago some Yahoo fell off the roller coaster....looking for corn no doubt.  8)

Question for BK!
Regarding last night's tale, when you and Lembeck were both up for the same part, being that you knew each other, was this something you discussed at the time—who might get it and so forth—or did you only find out later that you were competing with each other?

Oh, we both knew it was between the two of us, but by that point we weren't really that close anymore - just spoke occasionally, so we never discussed it.

Had a delighfully delightful luncheon with Pogue.  We laughed and laughed, and just when we thought we could laugh no more, we laughed again.

As to the Kong rave and gross predictions - we shall see.

I am waiting and hoping for ANNETTE too...I loved that serial!

I should look up Roberta Shore for an interview...she would be a fun one to talk to.

Of course, Kong'll gross what "Titanic" did...it's called inflation!  Plus there are more people in the world now to see it than there were in 1997.  How obvious is that? ;)
