My day at work yesterday started in a most interesting way.

The first customer at my register nodded appreciatively as I commented that I was still waking up.  (My shift started at nine in the morning, and I am so not a morning person any more.)

"I've been having trouble sleeping, too," she replied.  "I've been planning my husband's funeral."

Oops!  At that point, I knew the best thing I could do was listen and care.  Fortunately, there weren't any other customers in line, so I had no reason to shoo her away.  As it was, she was still in the "I have too much work to do to think about grieving" stage.  The grieving will come later.  I hope I see her again soon.

I just never know what this job is going to throw my way next.

Pogue, that's awesome!

I love it when people break free.

My mother was a nurse in Lexington for several years after her nurses training.

I haven't had a chance to go over the last couple of day's posts, so I haven't read any other comments on the following.

After work, der B and I went to see King Kong.  Personally, I was impressed.  Sure, it's loud, and it's long.  Some of the photographic/editing choices bothered me, such as the use of blurred still frames in sequence during moments of quick action.  It was just too obviously a "style" choice.

I thought the casting of Brody as the playwright who finds the hero within himself an interesting choice.  Sure, his nose will earn him the chance to play Cyrano de Bergerac without prosthetics sometime in the future, but I thought he was engaging in the role.  Naomi Watts has the harder part, however, falling in love with the CGI Kong, a role that is almost entirely done in reaction shots.  The "ice skating" sequence was particularly enjoyable.

Will we be taking the grandlads to see it?  I don't think so.  There's very little blood, but enough gross-out stuff that I'd rather they not see just yet.  One death in particular was way over the top.  On the other hand, they might decide that scene is "cool."

Thanks to der Brucer being a end-credits fan, we caught a final credit that most people have probably missed: Jackson and company thanked those who had created the story and first film for leading the way, and singled out "the incomperable Fay Wray."  If only other remakes had that kind of class.

In Honor of DR CP's Big Announcement I shall sing:

The sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home
'Tis summer, the people are gay
The corn top's ripe and the meadow's in bloom
While the birds make music all the day
The young folks roll on the little cabin floor
All merry, all happy and bright
By 'n by hard times come a-knocking at the door
Then my old Kentucky home, good night.

Chorus:

Weep no more my lady,
oh weep no more today.
We will sing one song for the old Kentucky home,
for the old Kentucky home far away.

They hunt no more for the 'possum and the coon,
On meadow, the hill and the shore,
They sing no more by the glimmer of the moon,
On the bench by that old cabin door.
The day goes by like a shadow o'er the heart,
With sorrow where all was delight.
The time has come when the people have to part,
Then my old Kentucky home, good night.

The head must bow and the back will have to bend,
Wherever the poor folks may go
A few more days and the trouble will end,
In the field where sugar-canes may grow.
A few more days till we totter on the road,
Then my old Kentucky home, good night.

A bit of Kentucky/Stephen Foster trivia: That first verse USED to go:

The sun shines bright on my Old Kentucky Home
'Tis summer, the DARKIES are gay...

...The time has come when the darkies must go home
And my Old Kentucky Home, goodnight...

TOD: We've been listening to the OCR of Cyrano, with Christopher Plummer; Bette Midler sings the Peggy Lee Songbook; and a Dr. Demento collection of Christmas songs.  I haven't had a chance to sit down and watch anything (other than KK) all week.

But a box arrived via UPS today, which der B grabbed away even though it is addressed to me.  I had it in my hands long enough to spot where it came from: Food Network!  It's the next nine discs of Alton Brown's Good Eats!

And I am sure DR CP took photos before it was loaded up.

DR SWW - I kind of thought diluting the Jack character into a writer (Brody) and a "hero" (Kyle Chandler) made him less interesting and gave him less to do.

Also liked the idea in the original that Denham knew about Kong from the beginning and was making the trip specifically to photograph him, in the remake he wants to photograph the island but only gets Kong because he stumbles upon him.

But these are just small quibbles......

I'm up, I'm up, after another long and good night's sleep.  Too early to predict if the queasiness is over - yesterday morning I thought it was and it certainly wasn't.  I feel okay now, and am hoping it stays that way.

I, of course, have known about the Pogue move for months, but I wanted him to tell you when he wanted.  I was very sad when he told me, because I consider he and Julieanne great friends and I knew I'd miss their company and our meals together.  But, I also knew that he'd done the right thing - this city is out of control, worse than NY now, in terms of money, and it's almost impossible to live here unless you're working 365 days a year and getting well-paid for it.  I would have been wiser when I cashed out of my house last year to move out of here - more difficult for me because I'm a native and have strong ties here.  But instead of a good deal of money lasting three years or ten years, it barely lasts two years, and I haven't been especially profligate.

And, yes, I shall be the first "official" visitor - I'm hoping to go sometime in February, once the play is locked and I'm totally happy with it.

Whoa, wait a minute here!  Before moving to Delaware, I'd never lived anywhere but in California, more specifically in the Los Angeles area.  I've made the change fairly well, including the culture shock we knew I'd encounter.

Personally, BK, I think you haven't moved because you don't feel a real need to move.  Those strong ties are only as strong as you make them.  Keep nurturing them, and keep them valuable.

I'd ask where you would want to move, if you were to do so, but I don't think you want to, so the question doesn't have any merit.

Mr. Frank Wildhorn is in the conference room leading a reading of his newest show. Rather than singing through the songs live, they're prerecorded. All I can say is, "Didn't we learn ANYTHING from DRACULA??"

And now I have to jump in the shower to meet friends for lunch. Will return this afternoon and give full opinions on last night's shows and the Friday Media Report.

You're taking a shower with a friend and having lunch...at the same time??

Another plus for Georgetown: they have a franchise outpost of Skyline Chili!  (Address: 923 South Broadway.)

SPACE in case you taped it.

I was disappointed with who Trump chose.  And I was disappointed with Randall who when asked if Trump should hire Rebecca said NO!  I get that there should only be one winner.  But Randall has always come across as kind and generous.  And I thought his actions just seemed mean.

I totally agree!  I was thinking did Randall really just say that??  Why would he care if Donald hires both?  I had read something earlier in the day that speculated that Trump could hire both...but obviously, he didn't.
