As for the Topic of the Day...

A couple of years ago, I started to "taste" some really good wines - some pricey, some not - and I have to say that having a quality wine is sometimes worth the expense - and effort to find.  Some of the standard wineries - Gallo, Turning  Leaf, etc. - are producing some pretty decent "supermarket" wines now, but there are some amazing ones from smaller vineyards and wineries.

If it's a white, I prefer a Chardonnay with little to no "wood".  The California wine makers went through a phase where they over-oaked everything coming out of their cellars.  Yuck!  I prefer Australian and New Zealand Chardonnays since they are usually steel-aged.  And, keeping on the lighter side of things, a good Sancerre - especially with salmon.

As for reds, a very leggy Zinfandel is a nice indulgence.  But I also like a nice Merlot, and a Penfolds (Australian) Shiraz can be sublime.  -I have a bottle of 2001 (I think it's 2001) kept away for future consumption - it was a gift from a conductor.  A very nice gift from a very nice conductor.

One last post before I go: best wine experience was the 1959 Chateau Latour I was so privileged to taste in the late 70's. Nothing remotely like it, before or since.

I used to like to cook with Gallo Hardly Burgundy...

DR elmore - More undecipherable writing?  I thought you were putting the project to bed?  In any case...  If I don't make it up tomorrow, I will not be up there until the second week of January.  So...  Can it wait until then?  If not, could you scan it and e-mail me the writing in question?

Well...

I've been tracking down internet reviews responses to last night's first preview of Lestat.  Some interesting reading.  All in all, what any new show would be subject to on first viewing and hearing.  However...

I've never really been "in" to all the theatre chat boards... And after reading some of the drivel and "informed" opinions of some of the posters... YIKES!!!  -One person at least admitted that Lestat was only the second show he/she had ever seen.  -The first one was, of course, Phantom of the Opera.

BK, if I could afford the trip to L.A. I would surely go to see the play...you will just have to bring it to the Pacific Northwest and cast Ms. Jessica Skerritt.

I know where you can find her right now!! ;)

I don't drink (I don't like it) so I don't know from wines at all. :P But I don't think that there's anything wrong with it...it's just not for me.

Well, kids, I'm in the midst of the prep for that procedure that DR elmore had a couple of weeks ago  :P.  My appointment is 8:30am tomorrow, so I may be E & T for a while.  I'll hang in here as long as I can.

My day so far, though, has been quite pleasant.  Had my last meal at lunch at Panera with DH Richard and DS Rob.  Did some Christmas shopping, visited with my mom, and am now watching the Cincinnati Bengals try to get into the play-offs (wonder of wonders).  As for Christmas shopping, I'm farther along than I'd realized and have gotten to this point without going to a mall.  Love the season, loathe the hype.

BK, I found out that I couldn't get SEVEN MEN FROM NOW until the 20th.  I won't be able to get it for 10 bucks either.  But I've got it on order from B & N.  I got to find a really good video store here, knowing, of course, I'll never have an Amoeba, Lazer Blazer, or Heavy Rotation here.

Pogue, if you can't find stuff, there's always amazon, which I can order for you and use free shipping - they allow me to have several shipping addresses.

Jose, here is my sage advice and if you are smart (and you are) you will take it: Stay away from the theatre chat boards.  One of them is populated by nothing but teenagers who think they are God's gift to theatre crititcism, and the other is populated by the same teens and even worse young adults and adults.  Nothing they write means anything - they just do love to hear themselves mouth off on every subject, whether they know anything about it or not (mostly not).  And when someone with knowledge has the temerity to correct them, they go after that person as if they were Satan himself.

Good gravy - 15 minutes into ONCE UPON A MATTRESS and it's bad....not hilariously bad....just bad....

A misfire...miscast....  Tracey Ullman is no Carol Burnett....she's not even Sarah Jessica Parker.  FRED AND DAUNTLESS are just too DAMNED old!

Someone on another board was actually and hilariously trying to JUSTIFY the age of Fred and Dauntless.  And they were serious.  And yet they thought Glenn Close wasn't right for South Pacific.  How do you even have a discussion with such a person?

They probably liked the Matthew Broderick/Kristin Chenoweth version of The Music Man, too.

DR JOSE - I agree with MR BK that you should avoid the Message Boards.  I think you have already guaged the calibre of MOST of the posters.

UGH!!!  The final MATTRESS straw for me.....the casting of some irritating actor whose name I don't know, but whom I have NEVER liked in anything as THE WIZARD!!!

Hey is tonight's ONCE UPON A MATTRESS without commercials?  I taped it from 5-7pm on CBC (Cdn channel) and when I came home at 6:50pm it was already over!

Btw, today's heading "ho, ho, ho" reminds me of a funny line said on a soap this week.  The leading lady's husband (they are separated) showed up at a Xmas party with the town tramp.  So she looked at her and said, "ho, ho, HO"!  (if you get my drift). :)

Got commercials here, DRJENNIFER.    The best part of the show, so far.

But ENOUGH from me.

Hopefully we will hear from other posters.

Wow, we're really enjoying MATTRESS, especially the comic aspects.  Zooey Deschanel's voice doesn't quite work for me, and I wasn't crazy about the camera work on the swamp number, but other than that, it's a campy hoot, in a really good way.  Maybe it's because we're in a group laughing a lot???  Or maybe it's such low expectations?  (Ullman is breaking my heart with "Happily ever After," though, even though it's not close to Burnett's vocal on it.)

Carol Burnett who is one of the producers of this production said in a couple of interviews she wanted to get this "definitive" version on film....and that they kept bringing people in their 20's in for Winifred.  Burnett says: "I said where are we going to find a girl in her 20's who has the comedy chops for the role and can sing it....."  Hence the casting of Ullman.

Ya know, if George Abbott and the producers of the original production had felt that way, where would Carol Burnett be today?

Two points for the Spanish Panic.....lose one point for missing a lot of the fun in "I'm In Love With a Girl Named Fred"......"Happily ever After"...  see FJL's post above.
