Well, I'm off to my parents' house for dinner. Afterwards, I will be back home! And I get to sleep in my very own bed with my very own cat lying on top of me.

And I can post late into the evening again. As much as I like getting paid for house-sitting, I am always glad when it's over.

Well, today turned out to be a "me day". I was thinking about meeting a friend for dinner... Nah. Then I was thinking about heading out to movie... Nah. So, I just headed out to get some dinner - burger and fries - really good burger and fries*, and I've just been surfing the web and watching TV.

-It's actually been kind of nice being low-key today.

I think Ayn Rand tends to be a high school/early college thing for the intelligentsia. I actually love Ayn and appreciate what her philosophy did for me, especially surrounded by the "selfless" citizens of SLC, LOL, but, just like everything else, you need to take her with a grain (and/or pillar) of salt. But I still remember carting around my paperback Atlas Shrugged along with the Viking Portable Nietzsche (or was that the Nietzsche Portable Viking--I always get those two confused

) in my senior year of high school.

Maybe the policy is different in Canada. But I don't know of any stores that take back items with barcodes that don't belong to their stores. Of course it is terrible that you had all this trouble. It's too bad that you did not realize which receipt went with which dvd. But glad you got it solved.

DR DtM - Hair In a Can is still available. Years ago when there was still some foliage on the top of the mountain, I bought a can. It was icky and unsatisfactory. But everyone should try it once, just so you know.

Ayn seems to capture her most fervent converts in their late teens and early twenties, and then as we grow older we are a bit selective about which of her ideas we embrace. But I still enjoy the sweep and scope and suspense of ATLAS SHRUGGED.

Years ago when Ayn was on The Phil Donahue Show, some of the audience were rabid accolytes, some had never heard of her, and some said they were an author of their youth. One woman was only slightly critical and Ayn cut her off sharply:

"If you don't like my books, what are you doing on my show? I wish I could take back all of my books from people like you, you don't deserve to own them. Write me a letter." LOL....she was a great interview. I was always hoping that Tom the late night NBC guy or Mike Wallace would have Ayn Rand and Harlan Ellison on the same program!

I was encouraged to read Ayn Rand when I was in high school. I read Fountainhead and attempted Atlas Shrugged. I have to admit I found them both a bit pretentious and self important. A few decent ideas, but not enough to wow me. When I was doing my philosophy major during college I met some who agreed with me, others who loved her.

I watched some varied things on TV and DVD tonight.

First up was the Bob Fosse biography recorded from, what else, the Biography Channel. A fairly cursory look at his life and career, and once he won the triple crown of director awards in 1973, they zoomed through the remaining 13 years of his life in less than 10 minutes. That meant a lot of really fine work - like directing LENNY on film - didn't even get mentioned. And even though ALL THAT JAZZ did get mentioned, its Cannes Palme d'Or wasn't mentioned. STAR 80 never got mentioned either.

Not a very satisfying biography when all was said and done.

I bought ONCE UPON A MATTRESS on DVD. Don't ask me why; I guess I wanted SOME kind of record of the show since the production I was in didn't get recorded, and I don't have either of Carol's earlier two videotaped efforts.

At any rate, I watched the bonus features on the disc, and was completely underwhelmed. Pure puffery from top to bottom. There is a section where they show rehearsal footage side-by-side with the filmed results for two musical numbers. That was the most interesting thing on the DVD.

Having seen the show in high def, the DVD can't compare in sharpness to it, of course, but it looks acceptably colorful. The close-ups of Carol on the DVD look more soft focused on the DVD. I didn't notice any softening in HD.

I watched the HOUSE rerun tonight which I think was from last season. Very tense episode with some lovely moments. The child who played the patient with multiple cancers did a superb job.

And tonight's MEDIUM was another very unsettling, mesmerizing show. The writers for this series surely deserve raises for coming up with so many novel ways of working Allison's psychic powers into these crimes and investigations.
