I agree with DR Cillaliz, DR Jose. I love reading your experiences as you gear up for LESTAT. Your enthusiasm and delight is infectious, and I hope you continue writing your feelings. I know you will have to be discreet, but anything is welcome.

Amazon has some clips of songs you can listen to from THE HAPPY TIME

Also, Robert Goulet (Robert Goulet!  Oh, my God--Robert Goulet!) appears on one of the BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES DVDs singing the title tune.

If my Miss Marple box comes today, I'll be watching the last one (MURDER MOST FOUL) first. It's not my favorite one in the series (MURDER, SHE SAID is), but it's the one I've seen the least recently.

Hopefully these transfers are good so I can retire my duped-from-TCM DVDs of these films.

Vixdad is always talking about craving a chip butty or better yet a bacopn butty (remember English bacon is more like Canadian bacon than American Bacon)  but I have never heard him mentioning it being dipped batter and deep fried I shall have to speak to him on this

One of his favorite fast dinners from  "the olde country"  is beans on toast, which, as you may surmise by its name,  is nothing more than two or more pieces of buttered toast with baked beans (Heinz Vegetarian natch!)  poured over the top.

For fans of the show, remember that CBS is running SURVIVOR tonight at 8 since the NCAA Basketball Tournament starts on Thursday.

From what I read, it's a clip show rather than a new episode featuring a new elimination, but some of you want to see all of the episodes, so here's a reminder.

I'm more excited about a new VERONICA MARS episode tonight (LOST is a rerun) along with new episodes of BONES and INVASION, among other shows.

Tonight's INVASION is the last one for four weeks. ABC is bringing in THE EVIDENCE to run in this time slot for a month.

The whole Deep Fried thing is so peculiar! Ah, English cuisine, famed in song and legend. But, Jose, the description of that Butty thing, oy! Goes right a long, one supposes, with that Italian thing, deep fried CHEESE, fa' chrissakes...

Horrid! Unless, of course, one uses chicken fat for the deep frying...

I bought the original cast album (there apparently have been no others.) ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY CD yesterday, at Barnes and Noble in Westlake Village. Boy, that Cy Coleman could spin tune, couldn't he. A very young Kevin Kline is on said cast album - in a role that pretty much put him on the map. And Imogen Coca has a great turn in REPENT! Actually, I like that song so much, I may start using it. Comden and Green at their hilarious best!

A German spy who is sent to Ireland during World War II. The German is instructed to meet an Irish spy named Murphy and confirm Murphy's identity by saying, "The weather could change by Tuesday."

After the German parachutes into Ireland, he sets off for town. Along the way, he asks a farmer where he might find a man named Murphy.

"Well, sir, it all depends on which Murphy," says the farmer. "We have Murphy the doctor, Murphy the postal carrier, Murphy the stone mason and Murphy the teacher. As a matter of fact, I, too, am Murphy, Murphy the farmer."

The German gets an idea.

"The weather could change by Tuesday," he says.

"Aye," says the farmer, "you'll be wanting Murphy the spy."

NEVER is hard to tell about - the weakness in the middle register of the late great Madeline Kahn's voice makes it hard to know what the song is really like.

I just spoke to Vixdad.  He said the batter and deep frying wasn't done in Coventry but may be a regional variation on the meal.  He says a traditional chip butty would basically be hot steak fries between thickly cut pieces of buttered bread.  He also says now he wants one.

And he says the best chips are deep fried in "beef drippings"

and he really wants one.

 Now.

Oh, dear, so many boxed DVD sets coming out next week:
the third round of Shirley Temple films, the Busby Berkeley set, and then TV sets of GIDGET, BEWITCHED (season 3), HUFF, FLYING NUN (season 1).

And then Paramount is offering a new STALAG 17 and that TEN COMMANDMENTS set we talked about the other day.

Plus new releases like CAPOTE and CHICKEN LITTLE.

I'll be picking and choosing from this lot.

Tomorrow I'm headed over to the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga Canyon, to try to convince the powers that be that Maria in TWELFTH NIGHT doesn't have to be a young, buxom, sexy young housemaid... that maybe she's an alcoholic older housekeeper, hmmmm? I do like that show, in spite of the strangeness and cruelty of the funny.

Last night's "American Idol":

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]SPOILER?                  SPOILER?             SPOILER?[/move]

Wow!  What a letdown.  An amazing catalog to work from, and such mediocrity with only a couple of exceptions.

Best of the evening:  Katherine.
Worst of the evening: So many to choose from, including the one all the judges raved over at the end.  I detested Chris' song.  I hate it that he feels he has to sling a microphone stand around the stage in order to sing a song that Simon will praise.  I detest that Simon believes that equates to "real world" singing.  Simon likes muscular, grunting young men who act angry and tough, it seems.  That rather puts his nasty crack to Jay Leno about Ryan Seacrest to the test (he claimed he had nothing against homosexuals being on the show, and that his tolerance of Ryan ought to be proof. He then chuckled and said it was a joke).

They all cleaned up pretty nicely, I thought.  Bucky needs to get a better cut...but he looked better BY MILES.

Maybe it was first-night jitters, but only Katherine really lit the place up.  When Chris came on, I could tell he was going to deliver something I couldn't relate to.

That's me.  And I vote.  And I vote often.  It will be interesting to see who gets voted off.

My bet:  Kevin is gone!

As seen in a cat's diary:

Day 183 of my captivity...
My captors continued to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh succulent meat, while I am forced to eat dry, flavorless morsels.

The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from clawing the furniture.

Tomorrow I may eat another house plant.

Day 184 of my captivity..
Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded - must try this at the top of the stairs.

In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their new carpet-must try this on their bed.

Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body in an attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear in their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was.
     Hmmm...not working according to plan...

There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices.  I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the food. More important, I overheard that my confinement was due to my powers of inducing "allergies"; Must learn what this is and consider how to use it to my advantage.

I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and may be snitches.  The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an informant and speaks with them  regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room, his safety is assured.  But I can wait, it is only a matter of time...

Speaking of cold weather, we'd been enjoying some late spring-like temperatures for the last week or so, but it fell to 30 last night and isn't supposed to get back the low 60s today and not for the next several days either. Brrrr.

My heat come on this morning for the first time in a couple of weeks.
