Will anyone be picking up the Busby Berkley DVD set next week?

I have 42ND STREET (one of my all time favorite musicals) already, but I would like to have the other titles...at least FOOTLIGHT PARADE and GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933.

For your curling enthusiasts

Ready to rock
GP set to host the world with women’s curling championships

The long wait is over for organizers, volunteers and curling fans as the 2006 Ford World Women’s Curling Championships is set to hit the ice at the Canada Games Arena.

It’s been about 16 months since Grande Prairie’s bid to host the international event was accepted by the Canadian Curling Association and no doubt a huge amount of work has gone on behind the scenes since then.

From the set-up of committees to the recruitment of volunteers and the sale of ticket packages, as well as other assorted odds and ends, it’s been a hectic time for everyone involved and the work isn’t quite over yet.

But with teams now arriving and the Canada Games Arena all decked out in Ford World Women’s Curling Championships logos and memorabilia, the atmosphere of the event is quickly reaching a whole new level.

The international flavour of the event adds a certain something for a city that has already successfully hosted other events on the national and provincial stages.

Grande Prairie was certainly on the map before this event came along but the world women’s curling championships will undoubtedly help to make the Swan City stand out just a little more when it comes to awareness on a global scale.

But the long-term benefits of hosting the event can be talked about later.

This week, and all of next week until the final is played a week from Sunday, is about putting on the best show possible.

That doesn’t mean just the people directly involved in staging the championship.

It will obviously involve hoteliers, restaurateurs, merchants, cab drivers, and anyone else who will have a chance to meet the acquaintance of some of the visitors to our city.

It may also involve you, whether you are a spectator, or just someone who happens to bump into a visitor from, say, China, or Norway or Italy or Sweden or any of the other 12 nations represented in the event.

It’s going to be a time to remember for Grande Prairians and, hopefully, for those paying a visit for the occasion.

Our impeccable track record of hosting other events, such as the 1995 Canada Winter Games and the 2004 Royal Bank Cup, gives us good reason to expect a memorable – and successful – week.

So today we bid a hearty welcome to all visitors, but most especially the curlers themselves.

They, too, are here to put on a show as this year’s best in women’s curling prepare to hit the hack.

NEW DELHI - At first glance the movie seems like just another Bollywood film: It has the disco-beat songs, the hip-swivelling dance number and the hero and heroine cavorting in the rain in drenched revealing clothes.

But Aisa Kyon Hota Hai? or Why Does This Happen? is a unique first. The newly released feature film, which centres around the twin themes of safe sex and inter-religious harmony, was produced by the Roman Catholic Church in India.

Rev. Dominic Emmanuel, the film's scriptwriter and the spokesman for the New Delhi archdiocese, agreed that it's not the church's normal way of entertaining its flock.

''It is all about using a medium, in this case film, which is not only the most popular in India, but also available to people across the country,'' Emmanuel said.

Increasingly concerned about changing values in Indian society, especially among young people, the Roman Catholic Church is hoping to reinforce the message that long-term relationships and commitment can curb the spread of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

''We did not want to sound preachy. A whole film on HIV would be too boring. At the same time we wanted to hold the attention of the audience,'' said Emmanuel, who first thought about doing a television show, but ended up deciding a movie would be more effective.

With 5.13 million cases, India ranks second only to South Africa in terms of the number of people infected with HIV.

People infected with the virus face any number of prejudices, from difficulty getting into schools to hospitals refusing to treat them.

The Hindi-language film opened in New Delhi cinemas in late February and has seen a ''fairly good response,'' Emmanuel said.

It was funded in part by UNICEF and Christian aid groups such as Catholic Relief Services.

MURDER MOST FOUL looked fabulous. Not a scratch or speckle at all anywhere! I was just astounded by how good it looked.

And enhanced for widescreen TVs made it extremely sharp, just wonderful.

I didn't mention last night who I thought would be gone after tonight.

I think it will be Melissa though Kevin talking back to Simon won't go over well with his Granny fan base. Bucky could also be in trouble

I agree with you, DR Jennifer. I thought Kellie got the short end of the stick last night. She sang the song simply, purely, and with feeling. It's not her fault the song wasn't built for runs and melisma all over the place. Chris was overpraised, and, again, Elliott's purity of tone seems to mean nothing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who "didn't get it" last night. I really blame the music. The singers all have talent. The songs were just not appropriate.
