SHINING CITY: Fascinating show. Great performance by Oliver Platt. It is a show where the less you know going in, the better, so I will merely recommend it to anyone who has a chance to see it, and see it before you hear too much about it.

AMAZIN' RACE predictions, anyone?  I'm going to go out on a limb and say:

1st -- The Hippies
2nd -- Ray and Yolanda
3rd -- The Frat Boys

Nice prediction DR DtM.....after some consideration, I will flip your second and third choices....but I really would be happy for any of the final three!  ;D

My first question for ASK BK day:

What is your favorite (if any) Jayne Mansfield performance, and did you ever see her in person?

I love her double whammy (pun intended) performances in Tashlin's The Girl Can't Help It and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter.  Never met her in person.

My BK question of the day:

During your early acting years (stage, screen and television) who were you the most excited to learn you would be working with?

And who was the biggest disappointment?

Certainly Patricia Neal and Shirley Jones would be at the top of the list.  But I liked working with almost everyone.  In the early years, I can't say there was a disappointment - everyone I worked with was a pro and really great to me.  I mean, I was in an episode of The Super (is that on Michael Shayne's list - the things that come back to you), a short-lived series from Rob Reiner, and I detested Richard Castellano, although he was fine to me personally - but he was sort of a jerk to everyone else.

I felt that both Clive Davis and Paula let Elliott down in their bland song choices for him. The other two semifinalists were given standards by Clive/Randy/Simon that they could put their own interpretation on while still dealing with a very recognizable song. Elliott's song choices by them seemed underwhelming. And then he topped it with an underwhelming song choice of his own.

I think recognizability factor is very important.

Buckle Up and Wear Thick Underwear!

Quote
TAMPA, Fla. - A 44-year-old woman escaped serious injury from a gunshot Sunday thanks to her seat belt and a thick bra strap, authorities said.

Robin Key, 44, of Riverview, Fla., was shot through the windshield of the car she was riding in Sunday. She said she felt a searing pain in her shoulder.

Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said a .38-caliber bullet smashed through the windshield then bounced off Key's shoulder — thanks to a seat belt and a thick bra strap.

The copper-jacketed slug landed in her lap.

"It's a big bullet, but you had all those forces acting against it," Hillsborough sheriff's spokesman J.D. Callaway told the St. Petersburg Times. "It's very rare that something like that occurs. She's very lucky. You know, we're just glad she came out OK."

Key said she didn't know why anyone would shoot her. Sheriff's deputies arrested two men in connection with the shooting several hours later.

Authorities said they do not have a motive for the shooting.

You're right, DR Ben, about it being star roles that are eligible for the replacement Tony. I remember now reading in VARIETY last year when the award was being added that it was there as a lure to get big stars to come to Broadway to replace in a show with the idea that they might earn a Tony for their trouble.

And I'm sure plays and musicals are equally considered as well as males and females in the same category. There certainly were enough contenders for them to have the category this year.

However, I do remember one stipulation. A show can only submit once for a replacement in a certain role. Once it's submitted, that role can never be submitted again, even if someone terrific comes in later.

And NO SMOKING!!

Quote
DENVER, N.C. - A man taking a break from painting burned down his house after trying to snuff out a cigarette in a bowl of paint thinner.

Stevie Spencer had put the bowl on his coffee table before taking a smoke break about 10 p.m. Saturday.

"I forgot paint thinner was in the bowl," Spencer said. "I thought it was water."

The fire from the paint thinner ignited some papers, Spencer said. He got his wife out of the house, then tried to extinguish the flames with a hose. Spencer suffered minor injuries.

Fire Chief Jay Flynn said the house was too far gone to save it when firefighters arrived.

Towering Inferno department:  I saw some exteriors of this being filmed.  My girlfriend at the time and I went to SF to visit her brother and we were walking down a street when we noticed some big krieg lights, and headed off in that direction.  Lo and behold we walked around a corner and there was Steve McQueen in a fireman's outfit, standing right next to a sawhorse that had the street blocked off.  There weren't even that many people standing around.  There was a big crane with the camera and lots of production people, but we only saw McQueen, in terms of stars.

If only he had said "point to it" department:   I've been having a blast watching some kinescopes of late 50s tv dramas and there was a jaw-dropping commercial moment in one of them.  Picture this:  the scene opens on two destitute and barely clad young children walking through a third world shanty town.  One assumes we are watching a Christian Children's Fund or somesuch spot.  The sonorous tones of John Cameron Swayze start talking about world poverty and how the lack of power is harming people worldwide.  Cut to a studio shot of Swayze in front of a backdrop featuring a beautiful cloud-speckled sky.  What is he shilling?  Ready???  Westinghouse Atomic Power Plants!!

But, wait, that's not the best part.  In a truly mind-boggling denouement, he picks up a small container and states, "With only this small shoebox full of uranium, we could have enough power--peaceful power--to guarantee well-being for the entire world."

So, dear HHW-ers, I add to my staple of catch phrases, "With only this small shoebox of uranium..." which can be followed by any pronouncement of your choosing.  :)

Well....I think it would enhance your natural glow.

But the staying awake part?  I think it would lead to a lasting sleep.

Last night's "American Idol":

I totally agree that Clive Davis and Paula Abdul sabotaged Elliott with lackluster songs, although he aquitted himself admirably.

Three solid, if not "special", performances.  That's a better track record last night than either of the other two.

I didn't care for anything the other two did, including the "special" songs that were just oh-so-ootzily presented.  Don't tell me Katherine didn't have someone "stage" her "Over the Rainbow" and tell her when to toss her hair or hold her head back and yodel a few lyrics.

I think Katherine's is the weakest talent, yet, to reach the semi-finals.

Taylor's a lock...and will be the next American Idol.

As for Elliott....I voted 330 times for him last night!

Elliott is in third at dialidol.com, but admittedly, only two lines for each contestant were being monitored and text messaging isn't covered at all, so Elliott's still got a chance. Just a feeling I have that the judges (other than Paula) and producers would prefer a male-female face-off in the finals. Simon as much as told Elliott he wouldn't be around. I found that insulting and unfair. But then, if I were pulling for either of the others, I probably would have loved the comment.

DR JMK don't forget your friends when you're making copies of those dramas.

I bought the official A/E release of Frances' bio and watched it the other night.  There you are in all your splendor!

AND all of our names in the credits are the right size!  Not squeezed into a box so that the upcoming program can be shilled!

And I remember seeing that commercial about Atomic Energy....and thinking it was remarkable and that life was GREAT!!!!

Someone ordered a couple of CDs on the 9th.  Yesterday I get an e-mail asking me where they are.  Now, I don't know if it's just this generation, but a week isn't a long time to wait for something, is it?  I shipped out on the 12th, three days after the order came in.  This is all new, of course, and thanks to amazon.  In days of olde, it was always two to four weeks.
