TRY TO REMEMBER
« on: June 12, 2006, 12:12:03 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, you've remembered to read the notes, which is more than I can say, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're trying to remember where home IS.

Good Morning!

Well...  I did take some pics - well, James took some pics of me - before and after the ceremonies, but since they were requiring people to check their cameras at Radio City Music Hall, I was not able to take any pics inside.  Ah, well.

As for Tony Playbills... Well, when you presented your ticket to the Playbill counter, your ticket was punched and you were given a Playbill.  And that was it.  One Playbill per person.  I tried to get a couple more after the show, but the ushers were "under strict orders" to only give one Playbill out to each person.  So, I don't have any extra Playbills to send out to anyone.  Sorry.

*However, apparently, if one had a ticket to the post-Tony gala, then there was supposedly a table set up there with extra Playbills.

**You can still order a Tony Playbill from Playbill.com.

Well.. The main story for me for the evening was the music.  Rather the lack of it.  Well, more precisely, the lack of a live orchestra.  -Did anyone notice a conductor in the hall?  -Even though they referenced the musical director of the Tony Awards a few times during the evening...  In any case...

Howard McGillin did not mess up.  He just did not hear his intro due to the applause in the hall - and the relatively low volume of the track.  The verse of "Music of the Night" is AABA - or something like that.  Well, he started the first "A" when the "orchestra" was already on the second "A".

-And that was the moment when I truly realized there was no conductor, no live orchestra.  If there had been, that would not have happened.  -And Howard would not have had to guess where his final cut-off should have been.

And, yes, from what I could tell in the hall - and according to some of the people behind me - the excerpts from the Best Musical nominees were also singing along with a track.

As for the "screaming teenagers"...

I happened to be sitting in front of a good chunk of the cast and friends of The Color Purple... You wanna talk about screaming?!!?!?!  ;)

And it seemed that most of the shows had their own cheering sections down in the orchestra section.  Yes, there were some fans up in the balconies, but there were sure a whole lot of them downstairs too.

Obviously, I wasn't paying attention well enough.  I didn't even notice it, when it happened.

As for what was going on during the commercial breaks in the hall...

There were a couple of taped segments featuring Seth Rudetsky "Deconstructing the Tonys".  There was one segment about how certain actors and actresses don't blink.  Liza goes/went for 38 seconds during her rendition of "I Don't Know How To Love Him" from a Tony broadcast many years ago!

Oohhhh... Just noticed that it's a little past 4:00am here on the east coast...  And since I need to move my car in the morning - I meant to take care of that earlier today...

Goodnight.

This is far too absurd.  It's my day off, I don't have to go to work today... yet here I am, awake before six in the morning.  Bleh.

What was not bleh was the reason der Brucer and I did not watch the Tonys last night.  He and I were dining out, at Partners Bar and Bistro, enjoying a fine repast with the proceeds going to the local Dine Out For Life program.  (For those who don't know, thats where restaurants join together on a particular night and contribute to local AIDS charities.)

Since Partners is also a piano bar, a cabaret was presented by Matthew, one of the regular pianists, plus two of his friends.  Not a baritone in the trio, sad to say, which robbed some of their songs of the necessary gravitas.  However, it was quite pleasant.  It was also quite crowded, so after we had finished our dinners and our bottle of wine we didn't stay very long.

And then I went to bed.  I feel like such a party pooper, but that's what my schedule has been like lately.

And that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Good morning, all!  I have little to report so I shan't.  I've got a few things to do today and a party at Tony Walton's at 7:00.

DR Jose, you look great in that tux!

Good morning all.

First year I did not watch or tape the Tony Awards. Zero interest.  Gone are the years with quality musicals going head to head. When they have to fill out the categories with subpar musicals it's a shame.

From what i been reading with today's postings 3Penny Opera used the F word??? I know the show, I think pretty well, and I don't ever remember seeeing or hearing (on recordings) it being used. My guess is that this critically lambasted revival used it on the show to perhaps get the audience in.

Now we have the next rash of closings of shows that didn't win any awards (or major awards)

It will be interesting to see the post Tony reporting in todays papers

Ad for the Cabaret Series looks very nice!  And you can save $25!!

Orchestrations for PAJAMA GAME?  Ugh....more like deconstruction....at least it sounds that way on the CD....had to immediately listen to the OBC and start looking for the soundtrack on CD.
