MattH, I would have given BEYOND THE SEA a 10 if it hadn't been for the constant barrage of foul language which really irritated me because it seemed so unnecessary...sort of like this is a musical bio pic that won't appeal to the masses cause it is too old fashioned so we had better throw in lots and lots of bad words (since we can't have any cars blowing up) so that the guys will stay tuned.

However, the musical numbers are fantastic and I thought Kevin Spacey, while a bit long in the tooth for the role, was still very good and is one heck of a singer (I did buy the CD soundtrack), and the sets and costumes were perfection.

DR Elmore, you will be pleased to know that I added it to my Netflix queue even before you posted the photos!

I've added it too! ;D

Well, my sister, niece and I bought some stuff for my condo!  I'm home now and am going to watch a little bit of TV before I head up to Tacoma to meet TCB, Jed, Ann and Australia's own DR Tomovoz and DP Colin! ;D

I'll take pictures with my camera phone and post them later tonight.

Excerpt from the Associated Press

Quote
Veteran Actor Collapses Onstage, Dies
Oct 06 4:45 PM US/Eastern

Twenty minutes into the performance of "The Best Man" at a Chicago theater, veteran stage actor Gene Janson, onstage with fellow performer David Darlow, unexpectedly put his head in his hands.

When Darlow asked Janson if he was OK, "He replied that he was not," said James Bohnen, artistic director of the Remy Bumppo Theatre Company, which is producing the play.

Darlow rushed off the stage to get help, and a nurse in the matinee audience came to Janson's aid. Janson, 72, was taken Wednesday to Lincoln Park Hospital, where he died shortly after of a heart attack, said his son, Christopher Janson.

"There is a certain poetic irony to his death," Christopher Janson said. "He died doing what he loved, which was being on the stage and in a play he was so proud of."

In the Gore Vidal drama, Janson portrayed a fictional former U.S. president who dies unexpectedly. Bohnen said the role was one of Janson's finest in a 50-year career.

"He brought so much to his character," Bohnen said. "He was having the time of his life with this part."
Janson worked mainly on the stage, although his film credits included "The Blues Brothers," "While You Were Sleeping," and "My Best Friend's Wedding." He also appeared in TV shows and commercials.

Nope - your speedy post office delivered a nice buxum packagae today (and nicely inscribed, it was).

I might even read it.

You may not get the chance for a while.  I'm thinking of taking it with me to work, prop it up next to my cash register, that sort of thing.  Read it during my break (or as much as I can).  Watch Madame Dixie's eyebrows go higher and higher when she spots it.

Der Brucer and I have been watching some of the "making of" stuff on the Little Mermaid disc.  It's more informative than what Disney has had on their DVDs before, and they somehow got Katzenberg to be a part of the on-screen commentating.

Hello hello we are back at the hotel after a wonderful dinner with DR Elmore. We dished and ate and dished some more. It really was wonderful.  Grey Gardens was very good today. Didn't know that Broadwayworld.com said it was cancelled. Interesting, they kept us waiting until about 10 minutes before curtain before opening the doors, but open them they did.

We are not resting up for the return home. It was a great trip, but I, for one, am now ready to go home.

Thank you for doing my research.  I just might catch it.  The NIH wants me to return in December, not in the spring.  If I have to go then I might catch the exhibit.  What I will probably miss will be NY.

How about a HHW gathering on December 13th to tour the Library of Congress?

Okay, here's an odd one for you folks.

I believe some critter has died within the walls of my house. (Rat or Squirrel or chipmonk size, I suspect). Short of cutting into my wall (with some uncertainty to exactly where said critter has expired), anyone know any way to minimize or eliminate the odor of decaying flesh that's now beginning to pervade the specific area?  Any measures that can be taken at all, I know the larvae and the flies will probably come next. Any suggestions will be helpful on how to deal with this and contain or eradicate the problem with hundreds of dollars of damage to my house will be greatly appreciated..

We might be able to swing it!  It's a Wednesday, easier for me to take off then on a weekend.

I had the same problem, Pogue, in my other house.  In fact, I'm sure I wrote about it at length, including what I did about it.  I know it got so bad that I did have people come out and they banged up some walls pretty good and didn't find it.  It was a ratski and was found ultimately somewhere in the bathroom in a vent.  I know the exterminator brought something that helped with the smell, so you might want to give one a call - it was some powerful thing.  Maybe someone could do  a search in the notes and find what it was.

We're back from 68th St., where we had a lovely dinner at our friends' home.  While we were having cosmopolitans and munchies before dinner we watched the full moon rise between the towers of the SanRemo apartment building on Central Park West.  Dinner was pork tenderloin in bourbon sauce, greenbeans with grilled onions, mashed sweet potatoes, and homemade apple pie.  Doug said, "We never cook," but this was clearly a contradiction of that statement!

Tomorrow, it's choral eucharist at St. Thomas, a nice lunch, and our trip home.  DH Richard is packing right now and I must go do the same.

Travel vibes for DRs Cillaliz and jhvw!

Partay vibes to the get-together in Tacoma!

Had an interesting evening of viewing. I began with WALK THE LINE. I went ahead and watched the DVR recording I had made in HD.

I liked the film, but I have to say I think they overdid it a bit with the music. Maybe I wouldn't have felt that way if he had been singing Broadway show music instead of his country rock, but there you are.

Both performers very engaging; you felt for their problems and wanted them to work them out. On the other hand, it was very similar to so many other show biz biographies where great success fools people into thinking they're invincible. So, even not knowing much at all about Johnny Cash's life, it did feel overly familiar.

Good, not great.

Speaking of the Marx Brothers, am I the only one who remembers Decca putting out an LP of excerpts from their Paramount films along with musical numbers from Groucho and piano solos from Chico?

Decca put out similar LPs with W.C. Fields and Mae West. I haven't played those in decades.

Next I put in DANTE'S COVE. This is a miniseries on the Here! network (not carried on my Bible Belt cable service).

Part gay DARK SHADOWS and part gay MELROSE PLACE, it's also got some semi-softcore porn elements and pretty atrocious dialog. Still, I'm sure viewers on the Here! network are watching it not for detailed plot or meaningful conversation but to see those beautiful bodies in motion. And the men are all glorious to look at both in and out of clothes. There are lesbians included in the mix, and they're very attractive, too.

The package contained the first two lengthy installments of the show (each movie length). I only watched the first disc tonight, and there's a documentary on the making of the show which I cued up to play tomorrow.

DR MBarnum, I was wrong about the recording of BEYOND THE SEA. It happens tomorrow. Today, the DVR recorded SAHARA off Showtime-HD. Again, not expecting much more than a sandy INDIANA JONES knock-off, but Matthew McBongo can be fun to watch.

So, tomorrow I'll finish DANTE'S COVE. and then probably watch ON DANGEROUS GROUND. I've had it in the to-watch pile for a couple of weeks now, but it has been topped by more recent acquisitions, and it's about time it got its chance.
