My lord! MGM has released the heck out of ROCKY. This must be the FOURTH different DVD release for this film. I like it (still thought the Oscar that year should have gone to ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN or NETWORK),

Both very good movies, but neither as imminently watchable on a recurring  basis as "Rocky." IMO.

This is true of MANY Oscar-winning films...good watching one time only, as a rule.  But seldom holding up as well as the also-rans.

If only they'd do another study about the physiological congestion created by the pollutants of vehicular congestion.

Would LA still come out on top?  I think so....

Probably worst than most! The LA-Long Beach Harbor complex (largest in the US) generates vast amounts of polutants, not only from the ships themselves (very few go cold iron) but the endless stream of diesel trucks coming and going - the port complex has yet to get a really good rail link up and going. That the harbor is surrounded by oil refineries doesn't help much either.

The only really clean, environmentally friendly, industrial activity in Long Beach is...ready...off shore oil drilling!

BTW, DR Elmore, your arrangement and the performance of "The Holly and the Ivy" is one of the loveliest things I've ever heard.

Does DR Pulliam cook calamari?

JAPANESE RESEARCHERS CAPTURE GIANT SQUID
TOKYO  — A Japanese research team has succeeded in filming a giant squid live — possibly for the first time — and says the elusive creatures may be more plentiful than previously believed, a researcher said Friday.

The research team, led by Tsunemi Kubodera, videotaped the giant squid at the surface as they captured it off the Ogasawara Islands south of Tokyo earlier this month.

The squid, which measured about 24 feet long, died while it was being caught.

When I found myself so restless this morning, I put in THE TIME MACHINE and watched the first hour of it. Looks very good in this basically barebones release.

They have obviously never seen THE CALAMARI WRESTLER.

Well yes corn on the cob is best fresh....for some reason I don't like corn pudding, but I do like corn, even if it's from a can.

I like the sound mix on it, DR MATTH...even with my small 5.1 system, it's a lot of fun.  All those clocks during the titles.  ;D

Friday morning greetings!  I've been up since 7:30, makin' a list and checkin' it twice.  A grocery list, that is, and I've checked it 'way more than twice against the recipes I'll be using in the next couple of days.  Today and tomorrow are baking and wrapping days for me - our only errand tomorrow will be to pick up a Honey Baked Ham.

TOD -

DVD:  The Closer complete first season.

CD(car):  All Christmas, all the time

My sentiments, exactly.

I've seen parts of the remake on TV and it looks interesting...but....the original has so many wonderful things in it.

Which version was it, MattH?

I haven't heard yet whether I will get to do the third season or launch one of the new TNT series. I would like to stick with The Closer.

Most congested cities in US (times are annual hours lost due to congestion)
Fourth place Atlanta 67 hours:

This used to be my work exit, the connector, where !-75 ans !-85 merge and run through Atlanta.

Now I'm editing closer to our future abode....3 miles from work. That's one big draw to move into Atlanta. And thanks to Capricorn, it sounds like a good time to do it! Maybe next year...

Yes, indeed, and the sound mix is DOlby Prologic. It's not even a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, but the sound is so robust that you'd never know it. I glaned at my receiver while it was running this morning, and I was astonished to see it was just Dolby Surround.

Definitely the 1960 version. I have the remake, and it's OK, but it can't compare to the George Pal version, one of my all-time favorite sci-fi movies.

I don't know what the rest of this wet day will bring.

I do know that my mom and I have dinner plans at the home of old family friends.  First time ever doing so with the host and her two children.

Should be interesting....the daughter lives with the mom.  She was a playmate, a couple of years older than I, when I was 5, 6 and 7.  She is intellectually a 10-year-old, I believe.  Her brother -- who is married and has twins --  was older still...and a bully...and I was scared of him.  He is now a rather well-known stock car driver in the southeast and has a thriving local business.

Will report back on this.

DR Edi,

Charlotte has had an influx of something like 80,000 people in the last year or so, and you can certainly tell it by our traffic now. All the roadways are JAMMED with cars, and seeing this sight of Atlanta's traffic reminds me very much of what it's like to live here now.

And despite constant road construction, they will NEVER catch up.

An article in today's "Greenville News" notes that upstate South Carolina was the 10th fastest-growing region of the U.S. this past year.  Part of the reason is its central location between Charlotte and Atlanta.

TOD:  DVD:  I just finished watching a documentary on The Ealing Studios last night, part of the supplements to the Criterion Kind Hearts & Coronets.  The funniest thing on this edition is the absolutely gratuitous "American ending," which adds nothing and actually lessens the impact of the ending.  Thanks, American censors!

CDs:  I have stacks of new CDs to listen to.  Right now I'm on Anonymous 4's second Hildegard von Bingen collection, but I have also been listening to their Gloryland, as well as more contemporary stuff by Loreena McKennitt and Jars of Clay.  I also got a pile of Sh-k-boom CDs from the Playbill sale yesterday.  Imagine my surprise to find JRB's album autographed.  I'm sure he did that for me personally.   ;)

Yesterday's mysterious email department:  I received an email from someone named Ted Chambers with the subject line 1601-1645, with no body in the email itself.  If Mr. Chambers is emailing me his birth and death dates, I'm a little concerned, but glad to know there's internet there--wherever there is.
