I'd have to pick WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF as the greatest play to film transfer ever. I love the film of LONG DAyS JOURNEY INTO NIGHT, too, but WOOLF just "sends" me more than the other.

Others I really love: THE MIRACLE WORKER, BECKET, THE LION IN WINTER, SLEUTH, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE,

HHW was very hard to connect to this morning. I even sent BK an email--I didn't even get "too many connections." I got zip, nada, bupkis. One doesn't realize how addicted one is to something until it isn't available anymore.

I love The Miracle Worker - it's perfection as a film transfer, and it may best the play. Of course, The Miracle Worker didn't start life as a play, it started life as a live TV drama.

I do love Long Day's Journey as a film, and Virginia Woolf is wonderful (with the exception of some annoying censorship of language). I think Barefoot In The Park is a terrific stage-to-film translation, too.

Let's hear some "worst" adaptations, too.

I have an entire day free from chores, cleaning, etc. so I will be DVDing it all day.

This afternoon will be given over to finishing the MEDIUM disc already in the machine and then the Marlon Brando/MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY. Really looking forward to seeing the film after decades away from it and also seeing how the transfer looks.

Tonight, I'll be going through the usual list of CHristmas movies. I still have left SCROOGE, A CHRISTMAS STORY, MIRACLE ON 34th STREET, HOLIDAY INN. DOn't know which I'll pick from the list. My mood tonight will guide me.

TOD - On Golden Pond!

The trip up to the cabin was a real adventure - nothing like the devastation of angry water!!! Some people's houses were literally swept away. Others are left barely standing, with fifty massive trees smashed up against them, where the river left them. Huge chunks of road ripped out.

My cabin was untouched by the huge tree that came down across my driveway. Power is out, no biggie. This was the biggest disaster up there since the flood of 1990 - apparently every 15 to 20 years, whether we need it or not...

Some of the salmon streams are so clogged with debris, we'll be clearing them all summer for the autumn run. Boy, anyone with a chainsaw is gonna be very popular this spring and summer. One neighbor told me he had 9 feet of water up over his lower floor, and 15 neighbors camped out on his upper floor for a week.

The sequence was: too much rain; then lots of big winds that knocked over trees, right out of the over-saturated ground; then WAY too much snow; then another wind storm that toppled more trees. Now, mud and debris, lots of logs and stray shrubbery, road work, the power company - possible FEMA (oy) aid... I'll head back up in April and Do My Part into September. Quite the adventure...

In general, I think Tennessee Williams' plays on film like CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF and SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH were harmed by censorship of the times. The films are certainly entertaining and wonderfully performed, but they somehow miss the impact of the stage versions because important content was either cut completely or toned down for the screen.

TOD: In its day, i thought GREASE had vastly improved on its stage version. Likewise, ON GOLDEN POND, but that may have had soemthing to do with the star power of the film.

I deliberately left out musicals in my choices. That might be a wonderful topic for another day (we've probably done it before but with DREAMGIRLS set to open soon, it'll be a hot topic again.)

I retrieved my soprano and alto recorders and wads of sheet music to bring back to LA - found an early music ensemble to play with. That will be lovely.

ON GOLDEN POND definitely effective because it could be opened up a bit for the film version as well as cast stars who were perfect for their roles.

Saturday morning greetings! DR Elmore and I have been emailing back and forth about the difficulties getting onto this here site this morning.

I slept 'til after 9am, which is quite late for me, then had a cookie-baking set-back. The butter wasn't soft enough and the brown sugar wasn't fresh enough and I could tell that the flour would not knead in well. So, back to square one and I'll try again later. In the meantime, I've tried a new recipe - Toffee Cookie Bites - from Southern Living. It starts with 24 saltine crackers...

MattH - I agree about the opening up of ON GOLDEN POND, and have wished that Ernest Thompson would adapt the play to another version so that it's not housebound. but I guess that wouldn't be as economical a stage work as the single set one is, and of course the play seems to work just fine, but maybe it could be done with more suggestive (as opposed to realistic) sets.
