I have not seen a lot of films in the theatres but I did rent a number of dvds and i will list them below... the theatre ones I have seen

Faves:
1. The Queen
2. Prairie Home Companion
3. Water (Mehta Deepa film)
4. Devil Wears Prada (The book is better though)
5. The Illusionist

I liked but the following but it was not among my favorite ones but it was not the worst film I saw this past year:
Da Vinci Code

Worst:
1. Talladega Nights - I was forced to go to this one.

DVD/VHS that I saw this past year:
1. Madness of King George
2. Gangs of New York
3. DreamKeeper
4. House Made of Dawn
5. Powwow Highway
6. Philadelphia Story
7. Monsoon Wedding
8. Pride and Prejudice
9. Bride and Prejudice
10. Nowhere in Africa

Worst:
1. Caveman - dont ask -- I was forced to watch it with two friends
2. Cheyenne Autumn
3. American Pie movies - Too many plot gimmicks and not enough story!
6. Black Dahlia - was expecting more and found it disconcerting to watch
7. Kill Bill movies both of them...
9. Man Called Horse
10. Mary Reilly - I like Julia Roberts but she should not do a Scottish or an Irish accent. YIKES!!

Good morning, all!  And a special welcome to missmikah!

Someone sent me a wonderful package of chocolate fudge and I overindulged yesterday.  My stomach is a mess.

My plans today include a trip to the NYPL to look at all of the Townsend Walsh BABES IN TOYLAND scrapbooks for one last time (sob!).  Mr Walsh was the publicist for producer Fred Hamlin, and he kept meticulous scrapbooks on their shows.  His collection, which is in both the Theatre Collection and the Manuscript Division, consists of books, posters, and a ton of scrapbooks.  There are 4 or 5 huge scrapbooks of newspaper clippings for BABES IN TOYLAND.

DR tomovoz, the popular song history that has not made the Anna Russell CDs is the one that includes the Victorian parlor song "How sad and sweet the days that come While playing my harmonium."  I love the popular song group with the great Jimmy Carroll Five.

TOD:
  The Illusionist
  The Queen
  The Devil Wears Prada

I can't even get to 10!

Welcome new DR missmikah!

I'm actually down in Texas. Are you all New Yorkers?

Only in my dreams.  In reality, I'm in southwest Ohio.

DR MattH, reading about your smaller theatre problem I was thinking that DREAMGIRLS was playing in one of the smaller theatres in the multiplex we went to.

But by my estimation the small theatre must have at least 600-800 seats.

It felt small till you said yours had only 75!

Speaking of Paul Newman films department:  can one of you filmophiles give me your best educated guess as to what studio might have had a Newman property circa 1962 called Mollie.  It was based on a recurring character (real-life) in A. J. Leibling's WWII stories, a guy (Mollie was a guy) who happened to be an enlisted man under my father's command.  My Dad is in all of the stories, continually dealing with Mollie's f***ups and lack of proper Army discipline.  I remember some studio (20th Century Fox maybe--was Newman ever under contract to Fox, especially in the early 60s?) calling my Dad out of the blue in that time period and putting him on retainer as a technical consultant, but the film was never made.  I'm now compiling info on my Dad for a 60th Infantry site and wanted to get my facts straight on this particular chapter.

Newman did a LOT of Fox pictures in the early 60's, so my guess is you are correct.

Good morning to the lovely early-morning early bird DRs here.  I think that the Grande Mensch is probably still in the arms of Morpheus, and dreaming of Leslie Parrish and cake.

A special welcome to new Dear Reader Missmikah.  You will find that this Living Room is filled with a wonderful assortment of folks of every variety, shape, kind, ethnicity, religion, orientation, persuasion, height, weight, and geographical locale !

I don't think I've left anything out.....  but I'm sure any other DRs here will add to the list.

Hi DR Jeffrey MK ..... when you have a minute, I'd enjoy finding out about the significance of the "Kaufmann building" in your photo, and the other 3 folks in the picture with you.  You can do it offline if you want to.  Thanks..........

Your pictures were beautiful, as always, Laura.

And as far as the word-of-the-day :  I actually had a Cormorant once.....it was for the hood of my 1933 Packard car.

No TCB and OzTom -- I'm not quite THAT old !!

It's beautiful outside: not a cloud in the sky, but it's a December sky and that means COLD! Not getting out of the 40s today.

Hello DR MG.

Hmmm...seems Newman was under contract to Warners until 1960 when he bought himself out of his contract and went on to do pictures for many studios.  So....quien sabe, DR JMK.

Now it is time to do some work for the day...

Good morning dear Esteemed BK --  I don't have a question for right now, but I'm so glad that you have mentioned several times about the ridiculous and annoying "current trend" in sound tracks for movies.  Every camera move has that stupid "high to low frequency fast swoosh" and then a thud at the end of it so that all of the sub-woofers will hit you in the gut.....and all of that is at at least 130 db .  And then at the same time, the friggin' dialogue track has everybody talking in breathy whispers, with many words being completely lost!!  Who the hell thinks this has to be this way???

I didn't see many 2006 films in the theater. Of the ones I saw, DREAMGIRLS is the best, but I can't give a Top 10 list because I just didn't see enough of this year's films, even on DVD. I'll see many of them once they show up on HBO/Showtime/Starz, but I just haven't seen enough of them yet.

For example, I'm still catching up with films of 2005. Both A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and the Kira Knightley PRIDE AND PREJUDICE are on my DVR recorded off HBO-HD, and I'd like to see at least one of them today if I can get to it.
