Unique to South Carolina...coastal SC, that is...was "The Shag."

They made a movie about it, by the way.

Speaking of dances....

The first time I saw anyone doing the "Macarena" was when I saw Al Gore doing it on TV.

It was very strange, to say the least.

Wiggle your fingers, bend down 'til you crouch
Then you just linger until you say ouch
Get up and shout "Hey Guy Haines is the most"
You're doin' the HHW Post!

Actually, Wasn't Dee Dee's pony song actually called Ride.  "I'm going to get on my pony and ride, ride, ride."  I know I have an old 45 of it somewhere around here.  I think the Chubbster (as in Mr. Checker) actually introduced the Pony as he did so many other dance crazes in the wake of The Twist, including the aforementioned Hucklebuck...and the Limbo and the Popeye...

Ron, I have heard of the Shag and seen the movie.  My brother lives in S.C. (Marion) and I think his whole family took Shag lessons.

I'm up, I'm up.

The Tapioca was in the movie Thoroughly Modern Millie - I think it was created for the film.

I've done the Tapioca with lots of whipped cream.

Chubs was also responsible for the Hitchiker too, I believe.  Who was the Watusi...?  Why does the Orlons stick in my mind. "Wah-wah-wah-oo-watusi"...

I forgot how "Awards" season it is - I'm quite bored by all these Awards giveaways.  The actors, the producers, the directors, the writers, the Globes, the Oscars, the People's Choice (do they do those anymore?), and every website known to man now has an "Awards".  Perhaps we should start our own Awards right here - the Hainsies/Kimlet Awards.

I'm quite groggy this morning, but I'll get over it, joggy, and then packy.

Watusi is what you get - isn't that a Tina Turner song?

More Chubby Checker dance crazes:  The Hully Gully, The Jerk, The Fly...

Anyone remember how to do "The Freddie"?

And what about "The Stroll"?

The Bristol Stomp?

It was the Orlons who did Wah-Watusi.  They also did back-up on Dee Dee Sharp's "Mash Potato time"...The Mash Potato being another dance craze.  My we were dancing fools back then, weren't we?

Twist Trivia:  I own two Joey Dee and the Starlighters albums...of Peppermint Twist fame.  I think one is called Live at the Peppermint Lounge and the other is the soundtrack to Hey, Let's Twist featuring the band.

The Chub-meister also had a variation on the Twist with a record called, I think, Slow Twisting.

Even Sam Cooke got into the act with Twisting the Night Away, as did Gary "U.S" Bonds with Dear Lady Twist...I think that was his.

Anyone ever Bossa Nova with Eydie Gorme?

I do the "Freddie" every day.  The middle-aged Jew version, of course, is done with a little less flexibility and more kvetching.

At my brother's bar mitzvah, my mom sometimes reminds me, I thought they were making fun of my name when they started to do "the Freddie."  At seven years old, I didn't know from dance crazes.

A visit to the Chub-inator's website uncovers another dance sensation (well, maybe not exactly a sensation) that I vaguely remember...The Mess Around.  I couldn't begin to tell you how it was done.

With my little aches and pains, I tend to do the Bristol Myers these days more than the Bristol Stomp.

Slightly off-topic:

How many here remember the "classic" London Fog jacket in Navy?

This was very popular in the 1960s.  You'd go into a men's clothing store and find a rack full of the same jacket in various sizes.

I'd dearly love to find one now....but just TRY and find any specific link to a supplier of London Fog ANYthing.

I dare ya!

Now...when I said this was slightly off-topic, I meant that many of the dances being mentioned here were often danced by London Fog-wearing dudes and dudettes.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon! (for the East Coast Hainsies and Kimlets, at least)

I'm up, I'm up... Not sure I'm up enough to start dancing yet, however...
