I began my evening of viewing finishing THE LAST SAMURAI. It didn't end as I expected, and I ended up liking it very much. Like all movies that feature battles (even masterful movies like THE RETURN OF THE KING and not so masterful as STAR WARS III), I feel directors just have them run too long, at least for my comfort (I'm sure those who enjoy such things would prefer even longer contests). The battles throughout the film are extended to the breaking point (how many arrows do I need to see piercing throats?). The climactic battle sequence is about five chapters long on the disc.
Still, I never stopped admiring the HD quality video, and the DD+ audio (Blu-ray doesn't call it Dolby Digital Plus, but that's what it is) was extremely immersive.
