And, more importantly, how could we not have acknowledged the one year anniversary of Deceit?

Yes, it was right about this time that we were getting creamed by ninety percent of the "reviewers" in LA.  But, The Brain showed 'em.

DR MusicGuy - For the audiobook of "Kavalier & Clay", who was the reader?

*And, I've mentioned this before, but...

I was reading the book while I was in the midst of a run of 1776 at Ford's Theatre.  I normally don't read during shows, but since there was that 30 minute book scene in the second half...  Well... I had to do something...

I remember reading the last paragraph just as our "break" was ending... Needless to say, I had started crying, and it was a little hard to read the music at that time.  A friend of mine had told me that the final of the book are truly beautiful.  And he was right.

As for the movie - From what I've heard, it's still in "pre-production".  So, hopefully, it will still get made.  Stephen Daldry ("Billy Elliott") is still attached as the director, but since I keep seeing a couple more stage properties with his name attached to them.... Hmm... We shall see...

Frankly, I would like to see it done as a mini-series of sorts, or at least a mega-movie - some five or six hour deal.  There's just so much good, rich material in the book.  So much history, that I know I would be missing the "gaps" if things were - as they undoubtedly will - get edited out.

As for Kristin Chenoweth's concert...  Again, it was a truly splendid affair.  At least I thought so.  -I heard a few grumbles afterwards about the second half.  Yes, the second half was a bit more "artsy", but I appreciated.  A lot of subtle, moving - and new - material.

In any case... Here's the program listing:

Act I - Things You Want
Overture - Which was preceded by Ms. Chenoweth coming out in full NY Mets fan-gear.. "Hey, Kristin - It "THE Met", not "The METS"... Ohh! ;)
"Gorgeous" (Bock & Harnick)
"Popular" (Stephen Schwartz) - Which was updated in a sense by setting it up as advice she had gotten from Renee Fleming on how to get through singing at The Met.  -She sang the last refrain up an octave.
"Goin' to the Dance With You" (Richard Dworsky) - Assisted by David Elder and Sean Martin Hingston - Very cute, and a cutesy ending.
"Boy" (Jodi Marr)  - I have to get a copy of this song for myself.  First "cry moment" for me.
"If You Hadn't But You Did" (Styne, Comden & Green) - With an "assist" from Mr. Hingston
"Taylor, the Latte Boy" (Goldrich & Heisler)
"You're Easy To Dance With" (Berlin) - avec Mssrs. Elder and Hingston - This was more of a showcase for the men - singing and dancing - but, still, a great number.
"The Girl in 14G" (Tesori & Scanlan) - It was my first time hearing her sing this in person... WOW!

Act II - Things You Need
"Italian Street Song" (Victor Herbert, Rida Johnson Young)
Gilbert and Sullivan Medley (G&S) - She preceded this with an acknowledgment and recognition of her college voice teacher - who was in the audience.  Very touching.  And the G&S was wonderful too.  "The Sun, whose rays are all ablaze." to "something I'm not too familiar with" to "Poor Wand'ring One"
"Love Somebody Now" (Andrew Lippa) - Great song.
"How Can I Lose You?" (Adam Guettel) - Amazing vocal colors throughout.
"Run Away" (Ricky Ian Gordon)
"Hard Times" (Stephen Foster) - In a very kicked-up arrangement
"Show Me The Way" (Dennis DeYoung)

She was also backed-up on a few numbers by the Juiliard Choral Union.  Her MD and conductor and pianist for the evening was Andrew Lippa, and Kathleen Marshall was the  stage director.

Oh!  And the encores were:

"Glitter and Be Gay" (Bernstein)
"What Makes Me Love Him" (Bock & Harnick) - What a perfect closer to the evening.  And, yes, it made me cry.  However, it made her cry too.

Oh, and first act dress - a short red, sparkly number.  Second act dress - A GORGEOUS navy blue strapless gown.

As for celebrity sightings....

Hugh Panaro greeted me with a big hug each time he walked by me.  :)

Better Midler was a few seats in front of me.  -Kristin had heard through the grapevine at the intermission that her idol - "THE Idol" - was in the house - and even sang the opening of "The Rose".  -Which she said she had recorded at the mall when she was in high school.  She paid $7.98.  ;)

*And, on the way out, a woman behind me was crying a "bit".  Ms. Midler happened to be exiting through her row and noticed her crying.  "Are you OK?  Are you sure?"  -Yes, I'm OK.  My husband is here with me.  "Oh, that's good.  This is my husband."  -And, she looked great too!

Mssrs. Bock & Harnick.

There were a couple of other familiar faces to which I could not place names.

...And I have to give her major "props" for making even her "standard" material fresh and new.  I liked the operatic touches in "Popular".  Even "Taylor", which I've heard her sing countless times, had some new "business".

*And, yes, the concert did start late - I'd say about 15 minutes late... and the intermission was long too... But, hey, we all had a good time.  -And I had to wonder if part of the delay in starting was due to the 1 trains being messed up.  Apparently, there was some tracking problem around 7:00, so they had some trains skipping stops to get back on schedule.  However, they also started running trains one right after the other for a bit.  When I tried to board at 145th, one train sped right through the station, and about a minute later another one came by.  Needless to say, the trains were packed.  However, when we got to 96th, another 1 was at the express track across the platform.  So... I know when I took my seat, there were still plenty of empty seats (that eventually got filled.  -And even on my train, there were a bunch of people heading to Lincoln Center.  So...  But since the it was a relatively short concert - at least compared to the operas normally presented there - I guess they had some leeway timewise.

As for "Ugly Betty"...

From the look of the "eyes", I kept expecting Delta Burke to be under those bandages.  -Which I think would have been fierce!

DR Ginny - You should be able to find those Mozart confections somewhere closer to home.  Heck, I've seen them at CVS.  That company makes a few different varieties with Mozart on the wrapper.  The hearts are very good, but there are also little bon-bons, as well as truffles (sort of like the Hershey's "bricks" - same shape, only much better).  If you can track them down, they make an Armagnac variety which is quite good.

Here's the website for a company that carries all sort of Mozart goodies:

The notes from three years ago might be interesting to see. Use those. They would be before my time though. Aw, write new notes!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o ;D :D ;) :)

Hugh Panaro made me fall in love with phantom.  I was not thrilled with the movie, which was my first experience of it, so I decided to take a chance and see it in NY on bradway. I sat in the 5th row and could see every detail and His voice melted me and I loved the production! I am soo jealous!
