I've had a very busy evening. I started out watching the rest of THE GANG'S ALL HERE featurette on Busby Berkeley which I hadn't completed last night before IDOL started.

Then, in honor of bk's adoration of him, I turned on the commentary to listen to Dr. Drew Casper wax poetic on the film. I only listened to maybe ten minutes of it and cut it off. It didn't sound as if he was going to reveal anything extraordinary about the movie, so I put it aside.

Next, I watched THE BURMESE HARP, one of the most beautiful antiwar films ever made. Such striking images, haunting music (and choral singing) used throughout, and very expressive performances.

I also watched the two interviews on the Criterion disc, one with the director and one with the top billed (but decidedly NOT the leading man) actor in the film. Both offered fascinating facts about the making of the movie.

By this time, the IDOL results show was over and on my DVR, so I selected it to watch.

I wasn't more than ten minutes in when the phone rang, and it was my sick friend Jeff who had not picked up his prescription (if I had known he had a prescription, I would have gotten it filled yesterday when I drove him home). So, I had to drive over to his place, get the prescription and his emplyee health cards, find a pharmacy that was open (thank you, Walgreens), and get his meds.

It's been raining all day, so doing all of this in the POURING rain was not fun, but I hope it eases his discomfort.

Me neither -- that's why I was so willing to let you have the honors...if Case were here I'd ask him to post "The Boo-Key Boogie" dance graphic, but alas his ever lovin' has stolen his heart (much like YOU stole MY page 13...) and he's off with her "reading", so we'll just have to imagine that the "Boo-Key Boogie Page 13 Dance" is moving across the screen.....I imagine that it might look like that Little Travel Lodge Bear Doing "The Boo-Key Bear Boogie" across the screen..

I'll be curious to see what Cillaliz has to say about Curtains. She liked it a lot better than I did, but from everything I've been reading, it doesn't sound like they've done much of anything since LA - and if that's true, I just sit and scratch my head in wonderment. I thought quite a few of the songs (especially in act one, and especially with Ziemba and Daniely) were third rate Kander and Ebb. There were some nice things in the show in LA, but overall, for me, it missed more than it hit. Part of the problem was tone - it kept veering all over the place. Plus, David Hyde Pierce's character constantly saving the day got really tiresome after about the seventh time. And hopefully Mr. Ashford has done something to help what was very feeble choreography out here in LA.

I have arrived to the OC!! Staying at the Anabella hotel in a "Mission Suite" which so far is not very exciting. On the way here (the drive was a little over 6 1/2 hours) I listened to "The Brain From Planet X" and thought it was a lot of fun. I'll need to listen again before I review it. Kudo's to DR Elmore, the band sounded nice and full. The cast seemed full of energy. bk, LOVE your score, too much fun!

Just adding my thoughts on CURTAINS - The second act moves like a house afire (other than a slow spot with a love duet), at least as musicals can go. I was stunned by how involved I was in watching the detective unravel the mystery in the second half, and was surprised by the turns of events in a gratifying way. But the first act feels a little padded, including with show-within-a-show numbers, and I wonder if they can cut this 2:35 show down to 2:10 or so. But funny, funny, funny throughout.

BK, I really do like CURTAINS, maybe even more than I did in L.A. but I must admit at this point what I'm enjoying the most is watching it change and evolve. I see a lot of changes since L.A. and I saw several changes since last night...ok, I went last night. Many of the changes are subtle, but I noticed them and I think they make a big difference. Since L.A. some lyrics have been changed, scenes have beesn shifted around and a number of things slightly rewritten. The choreography is different in some places as well. If someone thinks it hasn't changed, they weren't paying attention.
It's my understanding there will be a number of even bigger changes in the next couple days.

Is there room for improvement - yes. I think trimming a couple of the numbers would help considerably. But they are making changes and I think it keeps improving. I'm really tempted to see it one more time before I go, just to see the changes I heard about tonight, but I'm not sure if I will. I could see it Saturday night....we'll see.

I agree with FJL, the second act is hot and much better than it was in L.A. even though I liked it there. I don't think the first act is bad, it's very funny. I think they will get it there by opening.

And I didn't hear exactly what the changes will be, just that there will be some changes in the next couple days

So, I do love CURTAINS. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to laugh, who likes show business and who likes a little mystery mixed in. And I can't wait to someday see it in it's final form. I think it will be a smash!
