This is why both formats are courting the porn industry. Porn makers chose the VHS format, thus killing BETA.
This could give "Blue" Ray a whole different meaning!

First LaserDiscs -

Fantasia and Star Wars.  We had to get something to play on that newfangled equipment, y'know.

Most of our LaserDisc collection has been replaced with DVDs by this time, but we still have a few that are in the older format.  And der B recently bought an LD of The Ritz, which apparently is not yet on DVD.

What we eschew is making the people who make the error feel like idiots.  We're nicer than that.

And, with that, I must get ready for work.

Beautiful day outside.  Walking to the store is going to be a pleasure.

So nice to be able to walk to work.

Good morning!

Gorgeous day here, and it's going to be at least 75 today, so I'm thinking spring is unofficially here. (Going to be 80 tomorrow according to the newspaper.)

AND NOW

we have a similar competition between two HD formats. BLUE RAY & HD (?). Which one is better? Which one release more films?

In the cases where the same film has been released on both formats - THE DEPARTED, for example - there appears to be no difference in quality whatsoever. Some have different audio mixes, but the visual quality is exactly the same.

Blu-ray will release more films because every major studio except Universal supports the format.

HD-DVD is supported only by Universal, Warners, Paramount, and (the indie studio) Weinstein Company.

This is why I chose Blu-ray. With only one studio excluded (for now) from its line-up, it seemed a no-brainer to me.

Kissing up, was he?

I wouldn't say so. That jazzy score is one of the greats and very unusual compared to the more classical movie scores of the same period.

My first VCR was an RCA Selectavision with the big colored buttons, a dial tuner on the front for switching channels, and the remote could only pause the tape or start it again.

My first VHS purchase was VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. Along with Disney, Fox's videotape arm of the company was called Magnetic Video, and they sold inexpensive tapes of some of their hits. They were pan and scan copies, of course, but it was better than nothing.

Blank tapes were horrendously expensive back then: $15 a tape. I bought a case of tapes so I'd have enough to tape movies I loved. Buying by the case lowered the cost per tape to about $10.

Since I didn't record any television programs last night, I'll be DVDing it today until the beginning of the AMERICAN IDOL finals tonight.

First up with be the 1948 THE THREE MUSKETEERS. Not the best version of the story, but I've read reviews that praised the Technicolor transfer to the skies so I'm anxious to see it.

I have one more disc in the LAW & ORDER: CI second season set, and I may put it in later today as well to finish up that box.

In our very poor days right after we were married, the middle-aged neighbors upstairs (who were worse off financially than we were, if that is possible) spent about $1500 on a vcr. I thought that was fascinating -- you could record a show off tv and watch it later. Wow.

We bought a beta machine because my DH said they had better quality. Maybe so, but it was hard to find tapes, and then it was impossible to find tapes.

The first one we rented was Disney's Pinnochio, because my DS loved "Yo-ko-key-yo." The rental contract said if we lost or damaged it, the replacement charge would be $80. I was very on-edge until we got it safely returned.

Thank you, MShayne, for your answer about Chinchy Bassa. Chincy Bassa is my favorite naughty phrase, which I have been using a lot lately. I was sure I didn't make it up, but I couldn't find it in the movie, so I was confused.

My first VCR was bought from Crazy Eddie's on East 57th Street in 1986.  They assured me it would be easy to hook up.  I found that it wasn't so easy to hook up.

I sure you found easier hook ups further downtown ::)

I'm dazed and confused...my browser won't allow me to view today's column...keeps reverting to yesterday's.  Even though I refresh.

When that happens you can usually out-fox the system by going to "Column Archieves" and selecting the top entry.

I still have a couple of things to plant, so I should go dig a couple of holes in the yard. I just don't know where to put the one-foot-tall stick that is supposed to turn into a ten-foot-tall shrub.

Speaking of Dazed and Confused, I remember being disappointed by DAZED AND CONFUSED, the movie.  It was supposed to be a film that finally covered my particular high school years, but I found nothing in it that I could relate to.  It raised no feelings of nostalgia for me.

It was the first version of the novel I ever saw, and imagine my surprise when June Alyson's Constance didn't die! (I am remembering this crorrectly?)
