BK, Miss Leslie Parrish should be arriving in your mailbox anytime now...if she isn't there already.

I cannot think of any particularly special St. Patrick Days, but I do always try to wear some green....wouldn't want to get pinched!

Good day to HHW!

Haven't caught up on the posts yet, but will reply to SINGDAW from yesterday regarding Leonard Bernstein's YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERTS:

I'm really enjoying the series. The name of the series is a misnomer--they were designed for kids, of course, but Bernstein assumes a very great deal from such young people. I find that the series works on many levels. I've been listening to classical music for 25 years or more, listen to it daily, etc, and I'm learning a great deal. I usually watch each lecture/concert twice. There's a book, too--did you know that? I haven't seen it, but it's available on Amazon.

And thanks again to DR ELMORE and DR JOSE for recommending the series to me (and to other DRs as well who made such fine recommendations).

Thanks, DR Jeanne!  Yes, I did know about the book, but imagine that it's more fun to view the programs in their originally intended medium.

I fear for the future of classical music.  The way they keep cutting the arts from public education, there'll be no audience for it at all before long...

Dog Food Recall - Misleading?

The basic recall item read:
Quote
WASHINGTON —

A major manufacturer of pet foods sold throughout North America under dozens of store names is recalling millions of containers of its products while working to determine what caused kidney failure and some deaths of cats and dogs.

Menu Foods said Saturday it is recalling dog food sold under 46 brands and cat food sold under 37 brands and distributed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. The pet foods were sold by major retailers, including Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway.

A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates is available from the Menu Foods website, http://www.menufoods.com/recall. Consumers with questions can also call (866) 895-2708.

..

However, further down in the newstory we learn:

Quote
The company said it makes pet food for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.

P&G announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands.

Note: the P&G premium products, Iams and Eukanuba, are NOT listed on the Menu Foods recall site! (Menu foods is not recalling them, P&G is.)

The basic story sure leads consumers to believe that only "STORE BRANDS" are suspect; and the web site in inadequate!

I share your fears. I usually listen to the local classical music station each morning--wherever I'm living. We had a fairly good one here until recently--WGMS-FM--but it is no longer. National Public Radio has converted back to classical as a result, but without as much personality, IMHO. I liked hearing the latest Yoyo Ma and such; radio is a great way to hear new recordings.

BK, NATIONAL PASTIME is not an entirely new play.  I played the role of Branch Rickey in a Tacoma production two years ago, and won Best Actor of the year for it.  If the play is running two and a half hours, now; then Bryan has done a great deal of padding to the two hour play that I did.

Great Frank photo, DR TCB.

Isn't the play that MR BK mentions in the notes the play that you were in last year?

Congratulations, JRand, you have a great memory!

I suppose it could have been the pace of the production - it was very slow.  Can you tell me a little about the style of your production, and if it had all that multiple narration going on?

One of the faculty members played Branch - he's been an actor for fifty years, lots of TV and stuff, but I would love to have seen what you did, because this gentleman chose to add about five hundred "I means" and "you knows" during the play, which I found actorish and ultimately not very respectful of the writer.

My family immigrated from Ireland. They were actually English, but it's a long story involving Cromwell, and I don't know my history well enough to relate all the details.

My mother did all of our geneology research (she's a librarian, too) and found the name of the street in Ireland where her great-great-great-great(?) grandfather had had his grocery store.

I took her and her partner to Ireland last year, along with a few folks, and spent an extra day and rented a car so we could go to the town of Nenagh and walk down Silver Street.

Gotcha.  And I am indeed above 125th Street.  I'm at 145th.

145Th?  Isn't that Connecticut?
