Good morning, all! DR TCB, what are you doing up so late or so early? You too, BK?

I have no plans beyond laundry and a trip to NYPL. I spent the afternoon looking at the new critical editions of RIGOLETTO, and Johann Strauss' DER ZIGEUNERBARON, DIE FLEDERMAUS, and EINE NACHT IN VENEDIG. I'd guess each volume of the Strauss operettas costs around $500, and they are beautiful! I want them all, especially ZIGEUNERBARON. Each volume contains an intro in German and English describing the editorial decisions for all the volumes, a history of the work, the full orchestra score, an appendix of revisions and alternate numbers, and the libretto, often several different ones - such as the Berlin and Viennese texts which often have major differences. I didn't know until yesterday, for instance, that Strauss wrote a different Czardas for the leading lady in a revival of FLEDERMAUS. I'm surprised no one's recorded it.

The RIGOLETTO costs around $350, and it's equally beautiful, but not as complex as some of the other Verdi editions because it wasn't subjected to rewrites/fullscale revisions like MACBETH or DON CARLOS. I hate being poor.

Next week I will look at the new Rossini edition and the new edition of Grieg's PEER GYNT.

For NYC area H/Ks - and others, perhaps, as well, although you'll need to check your local schedules - PBS/13 will be broadcasting the Met's new production of Tan Dun's The First Emperor on Thu 3/29 at 9:00 PM. And again Sat 3/31 at 3:00 AM.

The world-premiere broadcast of Chinese composer Tan Dun's epic opera features legendary tenor Placido Domingo as Emperor Qin, who built the Great Wall and gave China its name. Tan Dun's music is a fascinating mix of East and West, and this monumental production is staged by revered Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern and House of Flying Daggers), with costumes by Oscar-winning designer Emi Wada (Kurosawa's Ran). That's the thing about work in "the biz" He hasn't had auditions for weeks and now he has three and more in the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately, we know he won't be going back to Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke, VA for this year's summer production of Big River (they have decided to cast locally instead of coming to New York for talent) so he needs to find other jobs.

Singdaw, if you go up to the top of the page, you will see links to various pages on the site. There is a feature here called The Broadway Radio Show hosted by Donald Feltham. It's a weekly show focused on theatre and sometimes film music. He has interviews and plays CDs, etc. This week's show is a "Putting it Together" show where he focuses on one show (Cabaret this week) and uses different recordings to play all the songs. It's a very nice way to hear different performers.

The show usually changes every Sunday so this week, March 25th, the show will be about The Brain from Planet X.

On top of this page click on Broadway Radio, or from the home page with the notes click on the microphone at the left side of the page. When you get to Broadway Radio Show click on the title under "This Week's Show" Real Player will open and the show will begin. Even on a high speed connection the lag between clips can sometimes be slow so be patient. The show will usually play in its entirety, it just takes some time between clips. It has to do with the server and configuration and all that technical stuff.
