So...

Do any DRs drink or have ever drank Horlicks?

A bunch of the small Chinese and Korean bakeries around here sell it - hot and iced.  I had a cup yesterday, and I liked it.  Basically malted milk.  -Of course, after checking out the website, I found that it was a "sleep aid", which probably explained my need to nap yesterday during the middle of callbacks.  ;)

In any case...  Anyone care to comment?  Just curious.

I remember Horlick's Malted Milk Balls.  I don't remember why, however.

I am sure there is some crude comeback to that line, but I am still holding on to the new fig leaf of mine, so I will pass.

It is an awesome website.

Who knew Horlicks had such a history?

Quote

In Hong Kong, Horlicks is known better as a café drink than a sleeping aid. It is served at cha chaan tengs as well as fastfood shops such as Café de Coral and Maxim's Express. It can be served hot or cold, and is usually sweetened with sugar. It is almost always made with warm milk, and ice is added to it if a cold drink is desired.

The product's name has entered the vernacular as a substitute for the profanity "bollocks". This was exploited by the company in a 1990s advertising campaign, in which a harassed housewife exclaims "Horlicks" in a context where a stronger term could have been expected, thus widening the term's exposure and usage for a while.

The term was used in July 2003 by British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw ("a complete Horlicks") to describe irregularities in the preparation and provenance of a dossier regarding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

DR Jose - my mother talks about how she ate Horlick's Malted Milk Tablets for lunch when she was in high school (during the Great Depression).

As for Jamie Foxx in "Dreamgirls"...  After seeing him on "Oprah" and hearing how he only did one take of all his "vocals" because he didn't want to sound too "slick" or "too good"...  But it's a musical?!?!?!?!?!

As Dr Pangloss says in Hellman's original libretto for CANDIDE, "The uneducated say a great many stupid things."

Well...   I just ran into someone I haven't seen in almost 20 years!  Someone I greatly admired when I was in high school.  We've exchanged a few e-mails since I moved to NYC, but we've never been able to get together.  And, lo and behold, since he had a break in his session this morning, and since I was on "break"... :)

-And it turns out he's working on a new Broadway show... and a new National tour... So... :)

Since you're much older than you look, I'd guess Victor Herbert? :-*

I agree with you, DR Dan, about Jamie Foxx - THE weak link of the picture. I completely disagree about the recitative (I remember bk also thought dropping it was a mistake, but I don't.) The portions of it that remain (the scene leading up to Effie's big diva song, for example, seem wholly disconnected from the rest of the movie.

Exactly.  And that's because the previous portions are gone.  And because they are missing, it's not even clear until "Family" that DREAMGIRLS is a musical, and not just a fictional backstage drama with performance numbers like RAY.

Well, if it was Victor Herbert, I would have told him to down to the PHI immediately!

I actually ran into someone I've mentioned here before.  He's the reason I stuck with this whole crazy musical theatre thing.  I'm just amazed I ran into him, and that I recognized him.  He basically looks the same like he did in high school, but we've both aged 20 years since then - WOW!  20 years!! So... I was just walking by and happened to think he looked familiar, so.... :)

RE: the self-check lanes.

A bunch of grocery stores here have them. And walmart got them too recently.

I personally don't really like them that much.  But i know a lot of pople who do.  They are convenient if the lines are long, or if you only have a couple of items. But i'm not crazy about using them for fruits and veggies (that don't have stickers on them with the code).

Here there are about 8 self-cashes and there are usually one or two cashiers assigned to help.  I'd say that after doing it once most people don't require help on how it works.  But often the machine doesn't do something right and the cashier has to override it.

The first time i used the one at walmart the place for the credit card and where the receipt comes out were in a different place. So that took me a few minutes!

I have used the ones at the grocery store about a dozen times, but mostly when i go with my mom (cause she likes to use them). I personally don't think it is faster. ANd since you have to pack groceries yourself at most grocery stores here that part does not make a difference to me either way!
