Those self check out lanes are wonderful, and even though much of your trade are tourists it is likely they have all used these types of registers before...now as for the locals who may not have seen such a beast...well, best of luck!!

Well...   I just ran into someone I haven't seen in almost 20 years!  Someone I greatly admired when I was in high school.  We've exchanged a few e-mails since I moved to NYC, but we've never been able to get together.  And, lo and behold, since he had a break in his session this morning, and since I was on "break"... :)

-And it turns out he's working on a new Broadway show... and a new National tour... So... :)

Good morning all..... what a lovely bunch here this morning.

And I get to see the face of my favorite east-coast pianist shining brightly!!

I was going to say " 'Pino pianist," but I don't know if that would be considered disrespectful or offensive?  I never know about abbreviations.

DR François:  I do appreciate your attempt to set me straight in my queries directed at DakotaCelt yesterday afternoon.

The fact is, I missed nothing.  The fact is, she was commenting about a reek in the library -- a room which was HEATED and yet the doors were open.

My query had to do with whether the reek was being generated inside the library or was the reek coming from outside.

Reeks do get generated in overheated rooms...and, thus...I was having some fun in seeking an absolute clarification of the true circumstances of her original statement.

Do let things play out.....

Hey DR Ron.... I was away on business when the idiot driving the tanker truck creamed out the freeway junction there in Oakland.  Has it had any effect on your commute or your movements from home to work??  I sure hope not.

It happened in a REALLY bad place for a lot of traffic patterns for friends of mine there.

TOD -

CD(car) - The Brain from Planet X

iPod (right now) - Wynton Marsalis' In Gabriel's Garden, trying to drown out coworkers' chit-chat

DVD - The Queen - yes, I watched it Monday with the "girls," but DH Richard didn't attend the tea party and would like to see the movie.  We'll watch it tonight while we eat pizza.

What pizza toppings are appropriate when viewing The Queen?

As for the Friday Media Check...

Well, I have planned to cleaned the apartment this weekend, so I'm sure I'll have a couple of CDs on in the background.  But for this past week, it's been WQXR.

I have visions of you cleaning, and doing the "Everybody Ought To Have A Maid" number.... while looking very perky!

And speaking of quoting from reviews...

THEATER REVIEW | 'LOVEMUSIK'
Speaking Love With Kurt and Lotte

Quote
This bio-musical about the marital and professional relationship of the German-born composer Kurt Weill and the actress Lotte Lenya is sluggish, tedious and unmissable.

Hate the show.  Love the performers.

It seems to be week for contradictory reviews.  Even the one for Coram Boy was a bit mixed to say the least.

My 48 hours away from the store will be over too too soon.  Der B and I did drop buy, getting foodstuffs for last night, and the new self-checking registers have been installed, but aren't working yet.  I'll be trained on how they work some time in the next two days.

The problem with all these have-the-customers-do-it-themselves machines is that they are all designed so that the average person can figure the procedures out.  The key word is average.  This means that roughly fifty percent of the customers, who are below average in intelligence, will not be able to figure how to make the damn things work.  So someone will have to be watching the registers, to help the customers figure out what they're doing.  My hunch is, we're going to have a cashier helping the customers for a good percentage of the time, one per self-checkout register.

So much for the intelligence of management.  And I don't mean the management at our store - I mean management at the regional level.  Bleh.

Two years ago, one of our supermarkets installed four self-service registers in one of their less than upscale stores.  I predicted doom and gloom to the whole operation.  Two years later, the system is working far better than anyone could have hoped.  Certainly there are some problems (codes for produce and bulk items), but for the most part it is wonderful.
