COOL JAZZ

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both cool and jazzy, and now it is time for you to post until the cool and jazzy cows come home - they're having mellow grooves and well as mellow MOOves.

We had an amazing number of correct guesses for the Unseemly Trivia Contest.  Here was the question, which I thought was a real baffler:

This revival of a play by a well-known playwright (but not one of the playwright's most well-known plays, at least to me) eked out a mere three months, despite its illustrious company of players.  But, what makes this production fascinating is that its director would soon direct a wildly successful musical, and its cast, save for three people, had or would all star in classic Broadway musicals.  This play also had incidental music by a composer who would go on to write the music for the wildly successful musical that this revival's director would soon direct.  All but one of the people who had or would star in classic musicals would win Tony Awards for their performances.

Name the play and the author.

Name the cast members who had or would go onto star in classic musicals, name the musicals, and name the Tony winners.

Name the director and the musical he would soon direct.

Name the composer who wrote the incidental music and who would soon write the score to the successful musical that the director would soon direct.

Apparently, it wasn't a real baffler, and here are the answers:

Too True To Be Good by George Bernard Shaw

Glynis Johns, A Little Night Music Tony Winner
Robert Prestion, The Music Man  Tony Winner
Cyril Ritchard, Peter Pan,  Tony Winner
David Wayne, Finian's Rainbow, Tony Winner
Ray Middleton, Annie Get Your Gun

Albert Marre, Man Of La Mancha

Mitch Leigh

We had correct guesses from the likes of Dan the Man, Jbelles, Jed, Noel, FJL, Jeffrey Kaufman, and Michael Shayne.  I put all those names into our handy-dandy Electronic Hat, which randomly chose Jed as our High Winner.  So, if Jed will send his address, he will receive a sparkling prize.  Congratulations to ALL our winners!

late  posting, as ususal. Favorite Mancini is Whistling away the Dark, which i first heard , not in the movie, but at a  Julie Andrews  concert in Detroit, with Jay Johnston as her opening act. If I'm sad, that song cheers me up; If I'm already cheerful, it keeps me cheerful. Miss Andrews vocal is my desert island song.

Hi, Honey, I'm home!

It is about 4:15 a.m. (Left Coast Time).  I just arrived back at the house from Las Vegas.  I see that I have a lot of catching up to do.

I am off to bed (alone).  I have truly missed all of you.  More later.

Welcome back, DR TCB! And good morning, all!

As I type this, Mr Kevin Spirtas is singing "The World of Tomorrow." As for today, I have an appointment at 9, which I believe wil go well, then a trip to a locksmith, followed up by my arrival at the violated Toyland; I hope the door is still in place and nothing else is missing.

I had an email from my bass playing friend Kirk and he and I are getting together around 8 tonight for a nosh and some dish. I haven't seen him since his trip to Italy, so there's bound to be some good gossip.

I'm a bit ambivalent about Mr Mancini. While I love a lot of his music, I remember his work best from the albums of his music that aren't exactly soundtracks: "Punch and Judy" in CHARADE is one of my favorite tracks on the recording but it's hardly heard in the film. On the other hand, I find his arrangements of others' work often kitschy and badly dated.

Good Morning all.

I had to catch up. There was quite a bit to read this morning. I wasn't able to get on after work yesterday but I'm all caught up now.

Glad to hear that Donald is just taking an extended vacation. Sorry for the misinterpretation. It did sound like an extended goodbye to me. Glad to know the truth.

I'll go to the Greenmarket tomorrow morning, instead of at lunch time. Then we will head to Brooklyn for a 4th of July rooftop celebration and Thursday I will be back at the office.
