Dear DR Laura is so generous and giving of her time to so many people, that I wanted to surprise her with a special breakfast date this morning.  So... off we toddled to the lovely Frank Lloyd Wright inspired Arizona Biltmore Hotel.  And we dined on their beautiful outdoor patio cafe...... Here is Dame Laura...

BK, I did not realize you had worked with John Gabriel....I interviewed him last year...and DR JRand and I have discussed him many times on this board...although it would appear these discussions wre read only by JRand and I.

One of the wonderful and unique things about this outdoor patio, is that it is populated by some very gregarious and lovely grackles.  Here is a female that was sitting on the back of the chair opposite DR Laura.....

We watched them hover.....hover.....  ;)

Good Evening!

Well... I thought I was supposed to be done with day rehearsals for Mary Poppins last week, but then I got called in for some more , rehearsals for this week.  And, today, we got the schedule for next week, which has a couple of "double" rehearsals... which means they will need two pianists on certains days.  So... I guess I am playing next week.  -Of course, since I had thought I was supposed to be done last week, I had already booked myself for a few other gigs next week, so...  Guess I need to go in tomorrow and hash out the schedule with the music staff.

In any case, we had a good rehearsal today.  We almost got through the whole show twice.  -And boy are my arms tired!

A HOLLYWOOD CHRISTMAS contains a wonderful performance from Mr. Gabriel. . .

And as we were finishing up, the "apres-breakfast" ritual started for the grackles.  Here is one helping itself to a rather major chunk of pineapple!

BK, was Del Monroe with the BOTTOM OF THE SEA group?  Watching Mr. Monroe each week was one of my first inklings that I might be gay.

And speaking of Grease... And "You're The One That I Want"...

While walking past the theatre tonight, I noticed lots(!) of signs taped to the door stating that "Matthew Hydzick would be playing the role of Danny Zuko tonight".  -I guess Maxx Crumm it out sick or otherwise engaged tonight.

*I almost wanted to hang out to see what the refund line would be like at the box office.  Although, since their names aren't above the title, I'm guessing refunds would not be honored.  But who knows?

And of course, in the finest Tippi Hedren tradition, 3 more grackle-friends joined the table.

Of course, all of this has to happen in a ver short window of time....before the bus-person shows up to whisk everything away from the table.

After our lovely repast, we walked across the lawn to another original feature of the hotel - an oversized checkerboard in the lawn that can be either set for chess or checkers.  This used to be very popular with Hollywood stars in the 30s and 40s.

Here are DR Laura and some retired musician in the midst of the chess pieces.

And speaking of Grease... again...

DR Matthew - I bought the new OCR last week, but have yet to listen to it.  It's just not on my priority list right now.  However, I suspect the reason the disc sounds so "boring" is due to the fact that the producers of the current revival of Grease chose not to hire a Music Director for the production, since "it's just Grease".  (Not their words, but that the impression I got from a couple of people involved in the project.)  -And if you look at all the credits on the album, there is no Music Director or Conductor listed for the production.  -Kim Grigsby is listed as the conductor of the recording.

*There's a signing on Monday at the Virgin Megastore... I wonder what kind of craziness that is going to be.

DR MusicGuy - Did you and DR DearReaderLaura get to eat anything for breakfast?  Or did the birds eat all of it?

And at the far left and far right, you can see the red and black round discs that are used for playing checkers.  Even though they look fairly solid, these are actually made like a padded cushion that would go on a bar stool.

I thought it would be cute to have dear DR Laura sit on a stack of these for a picture......   ::)

W E L L ...... sometimews the best plans go... SPOO  !!!  And here is the lovely and graceful dear DR Laura "Al Fresco....."
