Not a huge fan of either Poltergeist or THE TWOLIGHT ZONE movie.  This was the era of the franchised director/producer where everything in film for me began to pall.  Directors who wanted still wanted to be twelve year old boys remaking their favourite childhood memories.

Respectfully, I think one of the important elements that has contributed to Mr. Spielberg's output of wonderful films is his ability to still connect with the 12 year old that he contains inside.

Childish? -- Absolutely not.
Child-like? -- to be cherished and never lost (IMHO) at the right moments.

Yes, I used to like Elizabeth George very much, but I think the PBS adaptations of her work,

I haven't dared to watch them for fear of that happening.  Her last book turned me off & I don't know if I'll return to the series.

I do enjoy historical fiction, esp around WWI. Yes, I've read Jacqueline Winspear.

;D I'm glad you anticipated my next question.

I looked up THE BEEKEEPER'S APPRENTICE and I think I have read this & remember enjoying it.  I'll try the second book.

So, four years ago today an audience loved another of my original musicals.  But I got a prize much greater, the hand of the fair Joy, the most loving and supportive wife a kid could ever wish for.  There’s no way I could have succeeded with Such Good Friends without her.

Congrats, Noel! It's been so long since last I posted here that I don't recall if I knew that you were one of the DRs... I remember you from centuries gone by on the AOL theater chat room (Geez, even nostalgia moves faster nowadays, don't it? I'm going to be talking to my kids about chat rooms, AOL, IRC, Lynx, Netscape, etc. and they're going to think that I'm a complete fossil). Good to see you 'round!

LOL-Ron.

DerBrucer & Ron, Keith never enjoyed fruitcake, until we began purchasing the ones from the Monastery Bakery.  He especially loves the chocolate covered (excellent chocolate) square shaped ones & has forbid me to get them this year, so he won’t consume them all.

The PNW comes through again:

STINKY SODA
Quote
Jones Soda (JSDA) offers NFL fans the taste of victory

Welcome to the world of Perspiration soda. According to company spokeswoman Clare Bowles, the new Perspiration brand soda is "kind of salty tasting," and perhaps even more tempting to your taste buds, it has a "stinky football sock" finish. Wow ... my prayers have been answered!!! I never would have dreamed that my desire for a drink with a stinky football sock aftertaste would be fulfilled.

OK, so maybe Perspiration isn't the taste you are after. Maybe you're looking for something a little easier to the palette. You can choose one of the other new flavors that the company is offering up like, say ... Dirt, Sports Cream or Natural Field Turf. Hmm, not sure which one appeals to me more, the dirt or the sports cream. Decisions, decisions.

A perfect accompaniment to Alex Baldwins's Schweaty Balls.

MEXICO CITY —  An aspiring horror novelist was arrested after police discovered his girlfriend's torso in his closet, a leg in the refrigerator and bones in a cereal box, the city prosecutor's spokesman said Thursday.

Nearby they found the draft of a novel titled "Cannibalistic Instincts," said the official, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity.
Jose Luis Calva told police he had boiled some of his girlfriend's flesh but that he hadn't eaten it, the spokesman said.

Ooh, a good one! I need to learn more "power-tile" words in Scrabble (words with X, J, and Z)... makes a nice extension for RAX, too...

Thanks to all for the lovely welcome backs, especially Der Brucer with that old photo ("Scarlet Street" editors and "Eighty-Eights" alumni Richard Valley and Tom Amorosi are sitting next to me, and The Lovely Wife(tm) is in the back...*sigh* oh, the memories...)

On the iPod: Some 300 hours' worth of lectures on the history and development of Jewish legal methodology
On my Youtube playlist: Comedy Central's roasts of Flavor Flav and Pamela Anderson (Talk about the sacred and the profane!).

I awoke to the very sad news that Richard Valley, my pal and publisher of Scarlet Street lost his battle with the cancer he's been fighting for the last couple of year.  RIP, dear Richard.

MOM GETS HERS!

MOM CHARGED WITH BUYING TEEN WEAPONS IN SCHOOL ATTACK PLOT

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. —  The mother of a 14-year-old who authorities say had a cache of guns, knives and explosive devices in his bedroom for a possible school attack was charged Friday with buying her son three weapons.

Michele Cossey, 46, bought her home-schooled son, Dillon, a .22-caliber handgun, a .22-caliber rifle and a 9 mm semiautomatic rifle, authorities said.

The teenager felt bullied and tried to recruit another boy for a possible attack at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, authorities said. His mother was not accused of helping plot an attack, "but by virtue of her indulgence, she enabled him to get in this position," Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr. said.
"This is not the best parenting I've ever seen and she needs to be held accountable," Castor said.

And I can't imagine why the kid was bullied:

Quote
Is this the next cult sensation?

Teenage girls could make "Across the Universe" a hit of "High School Musical" proportions.

By Chris Lee, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
October 12, 2007

"All You Need Is Love" may be an abiding principle in the gospel of the Beatles. But the Fab Four-inspired romantic musical "Across the Universe" -- in which winsome young actors and assorted rock stars sing 35 classic Beatles songs vividly re-imagined by acclaimed opera and theater director Julie Taymor -- needed a lot more than that after an uninspiring opening last month.

Then help arrived in the form of an audience whose parents were their age when the first wave of Beatlemania hit.
After three weeks in theaters, the PG-13 movie finally penetrated the top 10 by connecting with a zealous core constituency: teenage girls, who, anecdotal evidence suggests, are going to see the movie in packs, bonding with one another (and the film) through repeated viewings and popularizing it with their school chums via word-of-mouth.
