Thursday morning greetings!  Today's commute was much more pleasant than yesterday's, but it's cold, cold, cold here in SW Ohio - about 10o.  Brrrr.

Cold here, too, Ginny. A nippy 50F.  Brrrr  ;)

TOD: I guess it would have to be "Terms of Endearment," as that is the only Shirley McClain movie I can think of that I saw.

Thanks, DR JoseSPiano!  Now that Ben's not at the office each morning, I miss his ritual washing of the bowl.  I mean, he still probably does it at home, but...

It's not the same!   :)

Agreed. It's one of our HHW rituals. The morning's just not the same without Ben's washing of the bowl!

Good morning, everyone!

I'm pleased that Jason dropped in to see us in all his sartorial splendor.

Jose, thank you for the information about See's. Yes, Pentagon City had a See's kiosk for a couple years. When it ceased I had assumed that was the case for the whole region. I'm such a non-shopper that I'm just not up on these things! (When I do go to a mall it's Pentagon City.)

It's cold here, too, Ginny--in the 20s this morning. But the sun is out and it's a beautiful day. We didn't have any real accumulation and it will melt quickly.

LOL!  I guess it all depends on your point of view.  When my mother lived in Phoenix, she'd call and complain about how muggy it was:  "The humidity's going up to 12% today!"

Good morning!

Very cold here today with highs not expected to leave the 40s. Beautiful blue clear sky, however, so there are compensations.

Love Shirley MacLaine but not in everything. I really don't like IRMA LA DOUCE, not so much because of her but because it's too long even without the Broadway score and seems like of flat.

Favorite Shirley performances:

THE APARTMENT

GAMBIT

SWEET CHARITY (I think possibly the most vulnerable and touching performance she ever gave plus her dancing is excellent)

THE TURNING POINT

TERMS OF ENDEARMENT

STEEL MAGNOLIAS

POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE

GUARDING TESS

Unless the Blu-ray of LOST Season 3 ends up on my doorstep, I might finally get to see NAKED BOYS SINGING today! Will also continue with MURDER SHE WROTE episodes. I have a feeling another Jessica-less episode is up next.

Nice basket!

I love this photo, everyone in clothing of the commedia dell'arte before 1800 and a shiny new 20th Century accordion, not even a concertina!

Good morning, all! The bitch slept late and is taking a day for himself.  I just had a lovely phone conversation with the Men's Chorus conductor and everything is fine.  I must say, I love his arrangements; he's quite good with jazz and pop and writes in a style I never could do.

I have some banking this morning and that's about it.  I need to call my barber for an appointment, and then I shall putz about the apartment cleaning up two weeks of accumulation.

Lots of shows have new episodes tonight: UGLY BETTY, GREY'S ANATOMY, MY NAME IS EARL, 30 ROCK, CSI, and LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT are the ones I plan to watch/record. I'll also be recording the rerun of SUPERNATURAL since I didn't see it the first time around.

DR MattH, did you watch LIFE? I don't remember your mentioning it last night.

First up today while I'm cooking and eating lunch will be Sunday's DEXTER and last night's LIFE, both of which I'm really looking forward to seeing (finally in the case of DEXTER).

DR Elmore - Do you remember when you tried to get a commedia dell'arte group going here one summer?

I am a huge Shirley MacLaine fan, which developed after I saw Sweet Charity when I was a kid.  Shirley was a close friend of my late Uncle Charlie, with whom she worked on some NY Dem business.  In fact, when I was in NYC probably in 1973 (maybe, can't recall), Charlie asked me who I'd like to meet, and after my first choice was rejected (Leonard Bernstein--Charlie stated, and this is a quote, "I wouldn't leave you alone with Lenny"), I asked to meet Shirley MacLaine.  Unfortunately she was in China at the time making that documentary.  I was too stupid to ask to meet Sondheim, I think that might have been arranged, but I was too young to realize his significance at the time.  I ended up meeting Gerry Page and Rip Torn and also had lunch with Harrison Starr, who was an Associate Producer of The Cardinal, IIRC.

I have not seen that many of Shirley MacLaine's films, and most of those that I have seen I didn't care for, at the time...however, I love, love, love (that is 3 loves) her film THE CHILDREN'S HOUR! One of my favorite motion picture entertainments.

Got here late this morning.  Handled two very small tax "emergencies" that were waiting for me, but they were emergencies nonetheless.

Shirley was actually in this morning's Oregonian's people section, vis a vis some New Mexico Women in Film award she received.

Did someone mention that William Peter Blatty based his Exorcist mom on Shirley?  I believe he is Suki's (or whatever the h*** her name is) Godfather (so to speak).

What's Walter Matthau doing in a Bollywood film?
