Hmmm.... Maybe I'll take myself on the "tour" tonight.  This year's listing seems quite "abundant".

Re:  toward the light.  I made DS Betsy actually laugh on a very sad day a few years ago when we had to put down "her" dog, our purebred Collie Ethel, after Ethel's long bout with cancer.  Let's just say that Ethel, while beautiful and sweet, was not the smartest dog we've ever had.   ;D  So, anyway, Ethel had "left the building," and I told Betsy that our other recently deceased dog, Sasha, was on "the other side" screaming, "Run toward the light, you idiot, toward the light."

Good morning.

I must now brave the wilds of Salem, Oregon and pick up a few last minute gifts...one for my sister, whose name I drew, and one for my mom.

All my fault for not getting AT LEAST delivery confirmation.  :P

No, NOT your fault. A lost package is a lost package; I doubt that delivery confirmation would have made any difference to the carriers/thieves.

DR JRand - As DR JMK stated, sometimes Parcel Post can take weeks(!!!).*  Especially at this time of year.  If you just mailed the package earlier this month there is still a chance (your post just said "mailed on December    " - and I'd say a good one - that it will arrive at it's destination sometime in the, hopefully, near future.

*I still remember mailing a package from Fairfax to Richmond a few years ago via Parcel Post.  It wasn't a time-sensitive package, so I figured I'd save a few dollars instead of sending it via First Class or Priority.  Well... If I dropped off small packages and letters at the Merrifield Post Office in Fairfax before Noon, 90% of the time, they would get to Richmond the following day - with no special handling or charges - since Merrifield is a regional post office, and the mail would right onto the trucks from there down to Richmond. At the most, mail from Merrifield to Richmond too three days.  Now, when I mailed that Parcel Post package, it took 15 days!  I could have walked it down to Richmond faster than that.  A couple of times.

I know how I feel about this situation, and suspect I'm being unreasonable, but here goes.

We had bought a really nice Christmas gift for a close friend.  We just got a card that in lieu of a Christmas gift, that friend is donating money to a very worthy charity in our honor.  My feeling is that you should let people know in advance if you're going to do this, that there will be no exchanging of gifts, so you can reciprocate accordingly.

I hate to sound uncharitable, because that's not the way I am.  I donate plenty to worthy charities, but I don't call them gifts in honor of somebody, especially people whom I have every reason to believe are putting some thought into buying a gift for me, and then not letting them know until three days before Christmas that I'm doing that.

I say:  Donate to a worthy charity if your heart tells you to do that, but don't turn it into a one-gift-fits-all gift to all your friends, especially if you have reason to believe they're at least trying to do something special for you for Christmas.

Fred, I heartily concur with your comments. In fact, several years ago a close friend had had a stroke and I was trying to help him financially. I couldn't afford to do that PLUS do Christmas presents, so I informed my usual giftees--in advance. I wasn't sure how this would be received--some people shop very early, etc--but actually, it was received very well. But it's not fair to do as your friend did. People must be informed BEFORE the holidays.

I need the 1st season of UGLY BETTY on dvd, but I'll have to wait for the price to come down.

I was contemplating buying it, too. I noticed that the Amazon price dropped significantly a few weeks ago, then went back up again. I suspect you'll be able to get it around $26-27 soon.

BTW, since so many DRs have had significant losses this year, I'd like to extend a special condolence because grieving is just more difficult at this time of year.

Re:  donating to charity for gifts.  Well, I'll be the contrarian (what else is new?).  We made a conscious decision to try make our "gifting" (hate that word, but there ya have it) more conscious this year and decided to make most of our major gifts to our families contributions to various charities.  We did, however, tell them that, which may be Fred's complaint.  I should say my sister had already gotten us a lovely boxful of presents for both the kids and Betsy and me and I told her I felt a little guilty, and she said that was a fine, Jewish thing to feel.  :)

My "secret Santa" at Cinderella also made a donation to No More Malaria in my name this week and I think that was a fine way to "gift" someone.

As for donating to a charity in someone's name...  I've always wondered:  If some donated some money to a charity in my name, does that mean that I could ask them for the amount donated so that I could declare that on my taxes?

And in other news...

Both my parents are out at CarMax right now selling the "extra" car.  Which means I am up the creek without a paddle - or at least in Richmond without a set a of wheels.  However, my Dad has said that I can use his car since they never go out, so...  Of course, I was hoping to head over to Steve's family's Christmas celebration this afternoon, but I guess I can't do that right now.  Ah, well.

At least the Mall is walking distance from here - as well as the movie theatres.

Someone could establish the "Levain Enablers Foundation" which could in turn provide fellowship grants to elligle Filipino Keyboardists.

(Have Fred set it up, and Ben can help with management)

Re:  donating to charity for gifts.

Your erstwhile Utahan friends have a "gifting" program to support animal rescue:

HERE

And they have more than just dogs and cats:

Quote
Echo

This majestic creature is Echo, the red-tailed hawk. She was found near Salt Lake City, with a wing full of gangrene. Unfortunately, part of the wing had to be removed to save her. She cannot hunt without a full wing, and would starve to death if released into the wild. So she came to Best Friends, which is state and federally licensed to keep her. Echo now plays a very important role as an educational bird, to be shown to youths learning about wildlife.

Echo was born around 2000. She is an absolute goddess of a bird with her topaz eyes and incredible wingspan.

They even have gift cards:

If NASA ever got out that far, would the headlines read" NASA fiddles with Uranus"?

No, my understanding is that someday NASA hopes it can actually land on the planet's surface, and then dig deeply for soil samples.  So, I guees the headline would read "NASA Penetrates Uranus"
