*And I have to say, I completed enjoyed tonight's performance of Compleat Female Stage Beauty.  It's a very neat, thought-provoking play.  -The author also adapted his script for a film version that starred Claire Danes and Billy Crudup simply titled "Stage Beauty".

Here's the blurb-synopsis from the LAStageTix site:

Quote
When women were men…on the stages of England, Edward Kynaston reigned as the most celebrated leading lady. His exquisite portrayals of Shakespeare’s famous females brought him celebrity and love at the start of the Restoration. Then, a real woman named Margaret Hughes stepped on stage to steal his glory. King Charles II decreed a new law and Kynaston’s splendor soon changed to squalor. His livelihood and self image wavered on the brink of destruction until…revenge and a stunning turn of events persuaded him to take the stage once more.

I had seen the play when it made it DC premiere a couple of years ago, and a friend of mine cast the premier production of it back in 1999 - and let me read the script back then too.  I really like this play, and was sort of surprised that this was the L.A. premiere of the play.  But better late than never.

The casting is top-notch, and the Actors really gave it their all and took some risks that paid off in spades.  I was also impressed with the Restoration/Modern Dress costuming concept - and there were some beautiful costume pieces.  -And some beautiful actors too - sometimes just in their underwear! ;)

DR PennyO really did a wonderful job with the musical component of the evening - even her pre-show announcement was lots of fun and helped to set the mood and time period for the evening.  And, yes, it was very good to see and hug her again too.  :)

Well, it's been a good, long day.  And I did a lot of walking - for some reason, the 212 bus seemed to be not running for a while, so I just kept walking down La Brea from major intersection to major intersection, from bus stop to bus stop... I started up at Hawthorn - just a block below Hollywood Blvd - and did not hop on a bus until I got down to Wilshire... About three miles!  -And that was after I had walked the Walk of Fame.

DR TCB, not sure if i am included in your comments (about spelling).  If so i didn't mean to make it sound so harsh. I'm not offended if anyone makes an error.  And in fact most times i just assume they are typos!  Me i do make a bunch of typos. That is for sure. Some of my fingers are faster than the others! :)

Thanks for the info DR MattH.

I hope they do air the remaining MEN IN TREES. However, i'm guessing that i won't get the ending i want. Since they probably did not know they were ending. Although maybe they were good about it and decided to make a possible series finale just in case.

Wow, it's bad enough that any type of non-drowsy medication makes me loopy/sleepy. But my herbal tea (for my detox) has me totally out of it today. And i took it 9 hours ago! :)

Good morning, all! I'm about to head out for some Brain surgery, so I wish a Happy Mother's Day to all of you, especially to those mothers among you.

DR Jose, what lovely photos of you and the wondrous and wonderful DR PennyO!

DR SWoody, I think you meant Suskin, a good friend of mine, who is the author of a forthcoming book on Golden Age Broadway orchestrators and their amanuenses. You'll be amazed to learn how many shows Don Walker took credit for as he suncontracted the orchestrations to others.

I have nothing else to report, but it's good to see another positive review. It's nice to know he liked the band even if he can't credit me. But who's bitter?

Mother's Day greetings!   I'm here between thunderstorms - the one about half an hour ago zapped our answering machine and I don't want the next one to get my computer.

Hope to be back when the weather clears up!

I found out this morning that the tornadoes sort of went around Joplin. Jhvw had been on the river all day and didn't know of the warnings. When they got to the car the sirens were going off. I don't know where he went for shelter, but he is fine.  His brother was in WalMart and ended up in the back of the store with about 400 other people waiting it out.

Neosho is where DR jhvw's twin used to work. It's very close to Joplin and looks like it was hit very hard.
