As for the Topic of the Day...

My parents would take me and my brothers to the movies on a regular basis when we were kids. Sometimes we ended up seeing movies that were more appropriate for them - adults - along with the more appropriate family fare. I don't think we saw anything R-rated... although, I do remember seeing both "Jaws" and "Orca" at a drive-in, so... Hmm... In any case...

I think the two movies that really stuck with me from my childhood are "Star Wars" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind".

Hmmmm....when I right click on a file, my system tries to install Contribute 3 - even though it is already installed.

Some programs say that can be fixed by removing Contribute from the list on a certain program.....but I don't want to un-install it....I am not sure I have the disc to re install it and I have to have it for the PCPH website.

RE: them seeing how the girls would handle a missed line (by their castmate), they do things similar to this on the auditions for I WANNA BE A SOAP STAR. I think it's fair. They have to know how a person reacts to such things. It is live theatre. And such things probably happen a lot. But i totally see why you think it was slightly unfair.

Planning my visit to THE VISIT for June 20-21, expecting to see both the Fri evening and Sat matinee. Any recommendations as to whether to stay in Arlington versus D.C. in terms of hotels? Any Arlington hotel recommendations near the Shirlington area?

I'm not sure what to make of the weather warnings here.

They say big thunderstorms. Huge gusts of wind.

Tornado warnings (i've never heard of such a thing here).

Hail. It's like 90F degrees out!

The weatherperson on tv said to stay inside.

I can't tell if she is being overly cautious or what.

Brokeback Mountain, the Oscar-winning film about two gay cowboys that starred the late Heath Ledger, is to be made into an opera.

New York City Opera has commissioned the distinguished composer Charles Wuorinen, 70, to pen the operatic version of Annie Proulx's novel.

Gerard Mortier, acting general manager of the New York City Opera, said the production was set to hit the stage for the 2013 spring season.

Mr Wuorinen said: "Ever since encountering Annie Proulx's extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it, and it gives me great joy that Gerard Mortier and New York City Opera have given me the opportunity to do so."

The 2005 film version won three Oscars, with Ang Lee picking up best director, while it also won best adapted screenplay and best music.

It featured the secret love that developed between two ranch hands near the fictional Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming in 1963, with Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in the starring roles.

Australian actor Ledger, 28, who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in the film, was found dead in his Manhattan apartment in January. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of New York concluded he had accidentally overdosed on legal prescription medication.
Like the film version, the opera will feature a dramatic musical score.

Mr Wuorinen, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1970 for his electronic piece, Time's Ecomium, is renowned for his powerful music.

Described as a "maximalist", he has written for orchestra, bands, chamber ensemble, choruses, keyboard, percussion, and electronics, as well as ballets and operas.

Brokeback Mountain will mark the composer's second world premiere at New York City Opera.
His adaptation of Salman Rushdie's novel, Haroun and the Sea of Stories, premiered there in October 2004.

DR Jennifer - As for the Legally Blonde show... Well... I thought it was an interesting twist, however, I think how the people behind the table handled it after the reading was a bit "unfair". First of all, in a real audition - even if the person has been given the scene ahead of time - memorization is not usually required - unless it's asked for specifically, but, in that case, the actor would have more than one day to get the lines down. Additionally, if the "reader" ever skipped or dropped a line, then the reader would be the one to acknowledge that slip first. -Of course, if the reader was reading the script too, well...

I think it would have been a bit "fairer" had Nikki acknowledged the dropped line first - rather than just having all that dead air during the scene. I think it would have been more interesting to see how the potential Elle's reacted to Nikki's admission.

Just my thoughts.

DR FJL - There are no hotels near Shirlington, unless you want to stay in that Day's Inn off of Glebe Road... No. Crystal City/Arlington would be your best bet in VA. At this time of year, I'd say it's just a matter of what kind of rate you can get. There is no Metro stop near Shirlington/Signature, so you're going to have to cab it either way.

Perhaps elmore knows his music, too, and can chime in. But the fact is that I have no Charles Wuorinen in my collection, and I pretty much will buy anything that's tonal American classical music, and if it was that sort, I'm pretty sure we'd have put out something of his on Bay Cities.

Ballston is very nice. Good mall. Decent restaurants. And just a few stops away from downtown DC.

DR FJL - Well, Ballston Commons Mall - I think that's what it's called now - is really more just a place where some restaurants and movie theatres are. There are some stores - the anchor store is Macy's - but the last time I was there, shopping seemed to be secondary to the Food Court.
