I have been off the board almost twenty-four hours (due to a loss of power). So nice to be missed.

Yes, a terrific storm blew through here yesterday afternoon around 2:30 with nickel-sized hail and strong winds (tornadoes elsewhere in the area). A downed tree three blocks away fell on a power line that cut power to the entire section of Charlotte with about 3,800 folks without power until about 6:45 this morning.

Needless to say, I was drying a load of clothes, watching JAKE AND THE FATMAN, etc. and my day was then completely disrupted. I went to bed at 10 p.m. last night, the first time that has happened in a long, long time.

I did manage yesterday to watch another episode of THE CLOSER from the set. This was the one with Francis Capra as the soon-to-be gang member as two gang killings were investigated. Such a sad story.

I began JAKE AND THE FATMAN yesterday. The first episode had one of today's J.R.'s - John Rubenstein - and Robert Reed in a story that had some similarities to the movie NO WAY OUT.

The second episode was actually the two hour pilot episode which featured Anne Francis as a nightclub singer.

There has always been talk of Streisand having some of her scenes removed from the release print of FUNNY GIRL, but honestly, the woman CANNOT sing, so if that footage contained any singing, it DESERVEDLY should have been removed.

I finished that pilot episode this morning (only got about 40 minutes in yesterday before the storm struck). There was a different bulldog pet for William Conrad in the pilot than in the actual series episodes.

Joe Penny is VERY attractive.

I'm very frustrated with certain members of my family right now.   There was a party that was a surprise party for my dad's birthday, only I was told it was just a solstice party.  Since I'm busy and it requires spending the night, paying a cat sitter etc, I didn't go.   I found out over the weekend that the other guests received handwritten invitations to a surprise party for my dad.  So, I wasn't at my dad's birthday party.

I was surprised after the party that I received emails from some other people who were there telling me I was missed etc.  Saying I'm upset is really putting it mildly.   It's the last straw for me and I was able to tell my brother that this morning.

He said it was a last minute thing....Right, and that's why everyone else got hand written invitations in advance and I got an email 2 days before.

I really don't need this kind of aggravation right now.

I also watched the third episode (the last on disc one), an episode with a hit woman who lures Jake's partner into an engagement and then kills him. Penny has a really standout episode in this one as he shows great sensitivity to the murder of his friend and anger when he finds out it was his fiance who did it.

The shows are not well written (MATLOCK folks doing the writing). Conrad's D.A. arrives at conclusions by intuition rather than by the suspects tripping themselves up (a la COLUMBO).

I also am at a loss as to why they allowed Conrad to appear so grizzled looking for the D.A. of Los Angeles. He's often unshaven and slouchy looking and that also seems a bit off.

The show ran five years (though during those five years, the character was moved to Hawaii and back, was a private investigator for awhile, and then became D.A. again.)
