Good morning, all! I discovered the "hoi polloi" while I was in high school, in the great Act One finale of Gilbert & Sullivan's IOLANTHE. Several years later, I was in Classic Greek class learning the hows and whys of the grammar of the term.
PEERS.
Our lordly style
You shall not quench
With base canaille!
FAIRIES.
(That word is French.)
PEERS.
Distinction ebbs
Before a herd
Of vulgar plebs!
FAIRIES.
(A Latin word.)
PEERS.
'Twould fill with joy,
And madness stark
The hoi polloi!
FAIRIES.
(A Greek remark.)
PEERS.
One Latin word, one Greek remark,
And one that's French.
This morning, I need to call for my x-ray appointment: stomach and shoulder, tidy the apartment for the visit of DR Ben, run to the market, and work on my various projects, a day crammed with incident, I dare say.
