THE BURPEE
« on: August 22, 2008, 12:07:47 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a potpourri and were especially pungent for the hoi polloi, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're doing the eight-count mooie.

I'm a little tired but not a lot tired.  Still, if I'm to get up early I should probably go to bed.

The Notes inquire: The Hoi Polloi and The Potpourri – isn’t that a book by Mark Twain.

I seriously doubt it. "Hoi polloi" is Greek for the "the Masses", so "the hoi polloi" is redundant as any friendly pedant will tell you.

And the word of the day is: AMBISINISTER!
Ambrose the Ambisinister once tried walking on his hands, but found he had the upside-down equivalent of two left feet.

Right now, der B is watching the DVD presentation of Somewhere In Time, in which John Barry appropriates Rachmaninoff appropriating Paganini.  Themes like old times.

I, meanwhile, have been enjoying the DVDs of the second season of EUReKA, which has some very clever writing, not to mention performing.

Speaking of which, there's some interesting information at a couple of blogs regarding Ed Quinn and the episode that aired last Tuesday night.  Der Brucer and I never saw that one coming!

Tonight, if all goes well, I will meet with our distinguished and lovely Mr. Larry Moore to reminisce about life in an earlier time. We will watch radical, left-wing commies sing songs about love and life in the old U.S. of A. in the 60s. Ah, the Chad Mitchell Trio!

f you are feeling more nervous and edgy than usual, chalk it up to a Mercury-Uranus contra-parallel (3:26AM PDT) followed by their annual opposition from Virgo to Pisces (11:14PM PDT). Whenever Mercury and Uranus face off against one another - on either side of the Earth -- communications and travel plans can easily go awry. You definitely want to factor in extra time when going out of town and this suggestion is pertinent for the entire weekend. Nevertheless, a Mercury-Uranus polarity also functions to bring enlightenment into your mind - if you are willing and eager to draw outside the lines and be receptive to higher truth. Intuitive promptings can become a gold mine or wellspring to explore ancient knowledge and almost forgotten civilizations that graced our planet in pre-historical eras. Romantic partners may want to board the love boat later tonight as the Moon trines Venus in earth signs (11:33PM PDT). However, you might want to make this a short excursion since sensitive Venus opposes unruly Uranus tomorrow morning.

Actually, I guess that would make you the burper. The unfortunate person who just got a whiff of your salmon dinner when you belched in his face would be the burpee.

TOD:

On the home DVD drive: Monk, Season 6, Disc 2 (the first episode, "Mr. Monk and the Birds and the Bees"contains, IMHO, one of the best-written scenes in the show's history and gives me hope that the writers can bring the show back to its initial splendor)
On ye olde iPod: "Free to Be... You and Me" (Marlo Thomas et al.)
Youtube playlist: Jeff Dunham's "Sparks of Insanity"

Where else on all of TV could you see a love triangle that featured Myrna Loy, Helen Hayes, and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr?

Good morning, all! I discovered the "hoi polloi"  while I was in high school, in the great Act One finale of Gilbert & Sullivan's IOLANTHE. Several years later, I was in Classic Greek class learning the hows and whys of the grammar of the term.

PEERS.
Our lordly style
You shall not quench
With base canaille!

FAIRIES.
(That word is French.)

PEERS.
Distinction ebbs
Before a herd
Of vulgar plebs!

FAIRIES.
(A Latin word.)

PEERS.
'Twould fill with joy,
And madness stark
The hoi polloi!

FAIRIES.
(A Greek remark.)

PEERS.
One Latin word, one Greek remark,
And one that's French.

This morning, I need to call for my x-ray appointment: stomach and shoulder, tidy the apartment for the visit of DR Ben, run to the market, and work on my various projects, a day crammed with incident, I dare say.

TOD:
    DVD: The Chad Mitchell Trio
CD:  Der Vogelhandler, Hershy Kay ballets for NYC Ballet, Rat Pack Christmas
VCR:  documentaries about military routines and various social visits around San Diego.

Friday morning greetings!  My meeting yesterday afternoon did, indeed, last an hour longer than planned.  I just barely made it to my book group get-together, where we had a fantastic potluck dinner and a good time watching Gillian Anderson in The House of MIrth.
