British Mini-Series?

STATE OF PLAY and THE STATE WITHIN are both excellent.

I also enjoyed FIVE DAYS, though I agree that the last 2 episodes were not as good as the first three.

Maybe that certain DR would even like to join us?

Oh, absolutely.  In fact, it should be an OPEN CASTING CALL!    ;D

BK's story about the "connected" guy he met in the restaurant reminded me of something that happened to me many years ago.  I've told this story a few times, but never on this site.

Back in 1974, I lived in the Oak Park neighborhood of Agoura Hills and knew a man named Eddie Cannizzaro.

He was known in our neighborhood as the "cat man," because every evening at six, he would go to a particular corner and feed all the felines in the area.  He was also known to have been "connected," but he claimed that he was a mere bookkeeper.

My first book had just been published, which made me somewhat of a neighborhood celebrity.

One day, Eddie stopped by my house and asked if I would like to write a book with him about his experiences in the Mob.  Initially, I wasn't very interested because, after the success of THE GODFATHER two years earlier, there had been dozens of books/movies about the Mafia, and I felt that the subject had, for the time being, been pretty well played out.

"What if the book contained some sensational revelations?" Eddie asked.

"Like what?"

"Like I'm the guy who pulled the trigger on Bugsy Siegel."

After I'd recovered from my surprise, Eddie proceeded to sketch out the details of the assassination.

"Do you really want to do this?" I asked him.

"Why not?"

"Because there's no statute of limitations on murder."

Long pause.

"Maybe I'd better think that over," he said, heading for the door. Then, he turned back to me and said, "You're not going to say anything about this, are you?"

I assured him that my lips were sealed and he left. We never spoke of the subject again.  Neither did he...until he was on his deathbed in 1987 when he gave an interview to a local newspaper.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And I've already practiced the bit of "grooving funk" that I'll be playing and recording  - and from the e-mail I just got, "teaching" too! - in a few(!) hours.

BK, I'm assuming that this was the DVD of "Five Days" that you watched:

Amazon.co.uk has the original BBC version:

That's the one.  I'm wondering if the Brit version has better picture quality.

Good morning!

Barely cool enough to keep the doors and windows open last night and this morning, but it comes to an end today, I'm sure.

BTW, we officially got 8 1/2 inches of rain during our Hurricane Fay experience, but some parts of the county got 11 inches!

Oh, and the big head guy on the left of the Brit cover (bottom) is Rory Kinnear, son of the great character actor Roy Kinnear.  He's terrific.

My favorite British miniseries will always be ELIZABETH R. Glenda Jackson's portryal from teenaged girl to elderly monarch is unparalleled among the women who have played the Virgin Queen. The two Emmys she won for it were richly deserved.

Other favorites:

I, CLAUDIUS (Derek Jacobi's work was comparable to Jackson's and he wasn't even nominated)

BRIDESHEAD REVISITED

Even the Brit DVD has an awful tagline which just takes you in the wrong direction - nothing is what it seems.  Why don't they stop with that crap?  I'd have to make sure that the Brit DVD isn't the same as the HBO.

I just remembered something.

Today is the 28th anniversary of my arrival in New York City. A friend and I left Minneapolis on Tuesday morning, August 26th and we drove all day Tuesday and Wednesday, spending Wednesday night in a motel just off the Holland Tunnel. We arrived in New York City at 14th Street and 9th Avenue at about 10:30 on Thursday August 28th. Boy, has 9th Avenue and 14th Street changed!

So have I ;)

Also interesting is that the final two episodes weren't directed by the same guy who did the first three.

I also liked the renditions of several of the Dorothy Sayers mysteries, too: CLOUDS OF WITNESS, FIVE RED HERRINGS, etc.

Today I'll continue with the PERRY MASON set. I've got nine more episodes to go, so after I return from lunch, I'll likely spend most of the rest of the day with those. I doubt I'll finish them today, but I'll be interested to see how far I get with them.

Nothing on TV tonight since BURN NOTICE is preempted for tennis. I also watched this week's previous shows already, so other than a couple of movies on the DVR, I have nothing waiting for me to watch other that work-related items.

I got an email yesterday from a dear friend in London. He's been a documentary editor for decades for various British networks. He said that all he's getting now are reality series...there are very few quality programs produced there anymore.

Maybe he should go back to writing. (He wrote the Peter Cushing/Christopher Lee movie THE CREEPING FLESH)!
