I prefer THE LONG HOT SUMMER myself.

Vixmom, I've been experiencing a bit of what you are, but on a smaller scale. Prior to coming to HHW I didn't pay any attention to astrology and saw no correlation with the horoscopes and events around me. But I do now!! JRand can set me straight, but I understand we're now in a Mercury retrograde. Perhaps that's what's causing the problems with the machines??

I am more concerned whether she is qualified to be president considering the age of her running mate

I am also quite on the opposite side from she on many (if not all) of the issues

Some nice  performances in the Newman cannon:

TORN CURTAIN
HUD
FROM THE TERRACE
THE LEFT HANDED GUN
LADY L

But I pretty much liked everything he did that wasn't supposed to be a comedy.

One story some DRs may enjoy:
My car alarm goes berserk at times. I take the car in for service, they tell my they reloaded the software, but the problem continues. I've been surprised that one of my neighbors hasn't dismantled the damn alarm for me. Exasperated, I phone not the service advisor, but the service manager, a few weeks ago and calmly explained that they simply are not getting to the bottom of it. They had the car for the day and told me that the problem was that the electronic door thingy was faulty and needed to be replaced. The alarm system thought the door was being tampered with. $440. Then I realized that this faulty thingy was on the right side of the car and it just so happens that some time back the shop had damaged one of the right doors while the car was up on the lift being serviced. The dealer fixed the body work at no cost, of course, but could this be fall-out from that incident? I can't say one way or another, but I called the service manager back and asked if that might be the case. He looked into it, and called back a couple days later to say that they would be taking it up with Volvo and I would be refunded the cost of the repair. Not a word as to whether it had anything to do with the damage they caused or not. As far as I'm concerned, that's between them and Volvo and am just glad to be getting my money back. Oh, and the alarm? As far as I know it has not gone off again.

Here's the email I got:

Bill Moyers is doing a poll on his PBS site asking, 'Is Sarah Palin qualified to be president?'  As you will see, right wing interests are packing the poll.  Would you take a moment to do this URL and register your vote?
http://www.pbs.org/now/polls/poll-435.html
If you can pass it along to friends who would be able to vote, it would help.  We'd like to take away a Palin talking point from the right, if possible.

Good morning!

Another cool, overcast, moist morning. It's supposed to clear up later, but right now, it's very gray.

Very sad about Paul Newman, but I think many of us knew this was imminent. What a fine actor he was and what a wonderful person he seemed to be.

Just did it! She creeps me out. But some feminists are supporting her, I hear? I cannot think why.

Favorite George C. Scott:

ANATOMY OF A MURDER

THE HUSTLER

PATTON

DR. STRANGELOVE

THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER

THE HOSPITAL

One film of his I've never seen is THE FORMULA, and since it was included in the Brando box set, I have it. Finding the time to watch it is another matter.

I'll second Druxy on THE VERDICT being my favorite Paul Newman performance. He's also just fabulous in THE STING. And, of course, it goes without saying that his early work in things like SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, HUD is peerless.

Today I plan to watch SUPERNATURAL as I cook and eat lunch. Then, I will spend the remainder of the afternoon on AN AUTUMN AFTERNOON.

Yes, bk, I knew you were a big Ozu fan. I'm looking forward to seeing what this looks like on DVD.
