I loved Charles MacArthur's JOHNNY ON A SPOT, a very cynical comedy set in a southern governor's mansion on election day around 1942 and the attempts of the governor's secretary and PR man to keep the voters unaware that the alcoholic governor who's just been elected to the senate was just found dead in in the local whorehouse. The play is filled with cynical hustlers and political advisors, corrupt cops, a horny southern belle, the whorehouse's madam posing as a nurse over the corpse, venal politicians, and graft. It all seems quite timely as well as reminiscent of Huey long and ALL THE KING'S MEN. I laughed myself silly at a farce that predated Joe Orton for completely unsympathetic characters. DRs JRand58 and TCB and BK would love playing this outrageous comedy. The production was wonderful and the cast was excellent. My friend Laura played the horny southern belle and Margery Beddows, who was Gewn Verdon's standby in REDHEAD, was a blowsy Rubenesque madam. It was truly wonderful.
In the photo my friend Laura;s on the right end.
