And I thought of a few more while watching Li'l Abner and Leslie Parrish.

We have the opportunity to interview Abner, who lives in Florida and apparently has some Mercer stories.

Would that have been Peter Palmer, or the real Lil' Abner?

Peter Palmer (picked a peck of....)

Actually, the wearing of Red Poppies as Remembrance started in the US for our Memorial Day (May 31), and then spread world wide as a Tribute to Servicmen killed in WWI. (The basic thought, however, started with a Canadian poet)

Okay but i guess my question is do people in the US wear the poppy?

Here at least i'd say every second person wears one. It is very widespread.

I bought one from a Veteran but put it on my rearview mirror.

My big love cat has a habit of dunking his favorite mice in the water bowl, where they float until I change out the water.

Tonight is the first time I've seen him take one and dry it out on the heating grate. Pretty smart! (Or maybe he thought he was toasting it...)

Each nine-piece poppy is made by veterans for veterans in Auxiliary sponsored Poppy Shops that supplement physical and psychological therapy needed by hospitalized and disabled veterans. The Auxiliary provides the materials and the volunteers. The veteran makes the poppy and is paid a small amount for each painstakingly made flower. For some it is their only income.

No matter what the cost of maintaining and supplying the Poppy Shops, the memorial poppy is never sold, but given in exchange for a contribution.

I've worn poppies every year at Memorial Day and Veterans day. The Vets and the Auxilliary give them out.  When I was a kid they used to pay us a penny a poppy to give them away and collect donations. I did that every year.

Yes it is. :)

Me too.  Especially on Memorial Day.

There was a re-dedication last Saturday of the Veteran's Memorial in my town.  One of the guests was Sammy Davis, a medal of honor winner who graduated a couple of years before me, but whom I know....he is a great guy.  In the second picture, you can see my elementary school....Newby School...the Memorial is on the corner of the lawn of the school and we took our hats off every day when we walked past it.  It is nice to see that it has been preserved, enlarged, and improved.....

DR ELMORE is the operaaddict.com site ordering system secure enough that I can put in my CC number without fear?

DR JRand58, I've never heard of anyone having a problem with it. They can sometimes be slow shippers since it's a oneman operation, but I've never seen or heard anything about it not being a safe CC situation.

Deep Discount.com has now sent me three e-mails about their "big sale" and I have never ordered anything from them.  What would happen if I did?

Well, I think I heard the UPS man drop off something. It may be WALL-E on Blu-ray (supposed to come this week), but it could be anything or he may have been leaving stuff for my neighbor instead. I'll see.

WBBL.

It could be curtains, or dishes, or a double-boiler, DR MattH!

LOL!

And it turned out to be . . . .

none of the above!

Nope, he stopped in front of my house but took packages next door only. Oh, well.

DR EDISAURUS thanks for sharing your Richard Sherman story and posting the pic....great stuff.

Yes, Frances was so pretty in RHYTHM ON THE RANGE....and she certainly attracted the public's attention.

She and Bing were friends for the rest of her life, he gave her a beautiful diamond necklace at the end of filming ROR which she kept for years.  Bing's only daughter has the middle name....Frances.  And his young wife Kathryn appeared on Frances' television show when Kathryn came through Indy playing Peter Pan.

Late in her life, Bing also set Frances up to be the television spokeswoman for an Orange Juice company...he was the spokesMAN, but Frances decided to express herself a bit too harshly in the final meeting with the company executives.....and lost the $50,000 endorsement she could have really used.....

Had a mostly enjoyable evening of program watching.

I began by finishing the season finale of MAD MEN. My goodness, even a classy show like this has its own kind of cliffhangers. I'm so glad the show was renewed for another season.

Next, I watched DEXTER from last night. I'm still liking this season very much though the intensity, of course, doesn't compare to last season. Kind of nice that's it's exploring different venues of Dexter's life.

Then I watched SMALLVILLE from last Thursday. Good episode, but characters certainly do change on the show quite freely.

I didn't have time to watch any Blu-rays that I hadn't yet gotten to all the way through, so I pulled out HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX to watch as much as I could before I started on my two prime time shows off the DVR.

HBO-HD has been showing this film a lot so far this month, but, of course, they use the reformatted 1.78:1 version, and I prefer the OAR.

Tonight's CHUCK was OK, but I grew very tired of the shenanigans of the Buy More geeks. The kiss between Zach and Adam was worth it, however.

HEROES had one of those going back 12-18 months to catch us up on events we hadn't seen yet involving some new characters and some old favorites. I always like those episodes, and this was no different.

I love it, but I haven't seen it in ages. And I don't own a copy of it. That may be something to put on my next DDD list.

Now the only one I have to catch up with it THE LADY EVE.
