When I was little I used to have a recurring dream about a gorilla that was behind a billboard at the top of the hill near where we lived.

I Dreamed A Dream
Words & Music by Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg

There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in days gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving

Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when Autumn came

And still I dream he'd come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this Hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.

To be horribly didactic, DR George, Schoenberg and Boublil wrote only the music; the words are by Herbert Kretzmer. What B&S wrote were the words to  J'Avais Rêvé d'une Autre Vie ("I dreamed of another life.")

Oh, let's get really didactic!  Schoenberg wrote the music.  Boublil wrote the French libretto.  (Kinda like Hammerstein wrote Ol' Man River, and Kern wrote Dah-Dah-Da-Dah.)

I'm in real trouble.

Der Brucer has discovered 24, and is already showing signs of addiction.

I don't know why he didn't pick up on the series before, but the telemovie 24: Redemption caught his eye, and now he's watched the first four hours of the new season over the last couple of nights.

My hunch is, he'll want to collect and watch the DVDs of the previous seasons very soon, just so he'll know what's happened previously.

I'm doomed.

DR MATTH - I have the IMITATION OF LIFE on the Universal DVD release....is there a Criterion for it?

No. But the quality of transfers for both movies is similar.

We're going into the studio to record the Jermey Piven/Zip/Fish parody tomorrow at noon.

If anyone has suggestions about parts which needs last-minute tightening, I'd appreciate it if you'd PM me, and I could probably rewrite some sections, or else take some replacements out of alternates that I've been keeping.  Here again for the first time is the whole parody lyric:

Parody lyric by Fred Landau (tune of "Zip!" by Rodgers and Hart)

[verse]
I’ve dined with the A.R. Gurneys
Spent New Year’s at Julia Murney’s
I’ve met every stage star livin’
But my happiest moment
Is the tete-a-tete I had
When I ate with Jeremy Piven

I met him outside his thee-ter
And he couldn’t have been much sweeter
I said “Mr. P you are such a trooper
Tell me how you never miss
How do you do eight shows a week?”
And he said “When I act
My mind goes something like this.”

[chorus 1]
Fish!
The sashimi wasn't brilliant today
Fish!
Does McDonald's have to fry its filet?

Fish!
I was eating Arthur Treacher's last night
Fish!
And I think that Arthur Treacher's not right

I have eaten at Kodama
That's what started all this drama
Fish -
I love every morsel

Anything that's in the ocean
If they sell it at Petrossian
Fish -
I am poly-dorsal

Fish!
I had more than any doctors allow
Fish!
What the hell is Speed-the-Plow?

[2nd chorus]
Fish!
Why does seafood come in so many brands?
Fish!
David Mamet sometimes eats with his hands

Fish!
English people don’t say fries, they say chips
Fish!
Lizzie Moss has such spectacular lips

I don't want a Nathan's weenie
Get beluga on a blini
Fish!
I’d be so ecstatic

I don't need to call a gal up
Just get me a giant scallop
Fish!
I’m so damn aquatic

Fish!
It took mercury to make me so meek
Fish!
I can't do the show this week!

[big finish]

Fish!
Lincoln Center’s South Pacific's a find!
Fish!
Yeargan’s ocean set brought clambakes to mind!

Fish!
I think Flipper on the stage would kick ass
Fish!
With Bill Finn’s great songs and starring Lance Bass!

I could go for any marlin
Blue or Brando would be darlin’
Fish
Let me have my quota

You can hook it, you can trawl it
Anything if you can call it
Fish!
Get me Abe Vigoda

Fish!
Tell my dresser to run out for some shark
Fish!
Where the hell is Marky Mark?

Looks like Tina Fey was naming real people who said she didn't deserve a Golden Globe.  The comments aren't even that bad. You'd think someone who is so unforgiving in her portrayal of others would have thicker skin

DR FJL - If you want to get really "in", you could always change the second line to: "Had pancakes at Julia Murney's"  (a Seth Rudetsky reference). ;)

I enjoyed the 1935 MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION, especially Robert Taylor whose emotions were so much on the surface that they affected me deeply. I can see why my dad liked this version so much.

Should it be:

I've dined with the A.R. Gurneys
Had pancakes at Julia Murney's

or

I've partied with A.R. Gurney
Had pancakes with Julia Murney

Guess we'll have to do a few takes!

I prefer the second version - only because it doesn't "possessive-ize" the surname.

There was also an 82-minute documentary on Sirk. In German, he didn't talk at all about MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION but seemed to prize WRITTEN ON THE WIND as his best American film.

Then I watched the two hour '24' which after an interesting and fun but less than gripping two hours last night, ratcheted up the tension tonight to the levels that '24' usually achieves. Now, I'm back in the midst of the show in a big, big way.

I think the second version sounds better, FWIW

I guess tomorrow I'll finally get back to that suspect National Lampoon movie STONED AGE (aka HOMO ERECTUS) as my work project. I am anxious to get that one wrapped up as quickly as I can.

I will also have Sunday's BROTHERS & SISTERS and  today's AS THE WORLD TURNS to catch up with tomorrow.

The tone is certainly more consistent in the second one. I was just surprised how it didn't affect me emotionally as much as the 1935 version did.

I think we'll be able to try both Gurney/Murney versions and see which sings better.

Just realized, we have actually partied with A.R. Gurney (and about 30 other people), but never dined with the A.R. Gurneys.  So that should give the second the edge anyway.

We've had coffee with Julia Murney, but never the pancakes.

But then the song is not about me.  :)
