DR Ginny - www.SETC.org I'll be in the "big room" again this year. 850 hopeful actors over three days. My 16th(!) spring conference!

I woke up to a cold, but gloriously sunny morning.  I'm still a bit cold, but the office is warm.

The "sunny" is fast disappearing as the latest series of storms is moving in for another (quite wonderrful for our reservoirs and water table) day.

Last night I watched 4 Boris Karloff features from Columbia pictures....released under the Icons of Horror logo.

The first was THE BLACK ROOM, a very expensive looking production from 1935 with Karloff playing twin brothers....some nice matte/double exposure work, but the story was a bit of a drag.  Then we had BEFORE I HANG and THE MAN THEY COULD NOT HANG....a couple of mad scientist dramas with Karloff finding the secret of eternal youth and reviving the dead, respectively.  And then THE BOOGIE MAN WILL GET YOU, a "comedy" with Peter Lorre co-starring.

I also watched THE TEACHER with Mr Jay North being seduced by Miss Angel Tompkins.....with a main title theme by Paul Francis Webster and Sammy Fain - sung by Miss Jackie Ward, who sang for Natalie Wood in INSIDE DAISY CLOVER and for Linda Evans in BEACH BLANKET BINGO and who had her own top ten hit as Robin Ward with "Wonderful Summer."

It took me years and years to find out who had dubbed for Natalie in this movie. (She sang for her in THE GREAT RACE, too.) For years, Warners insisted Wood did her own singing. When I rewatched DAISY CLOVER the other night, I noticed in the screen test version of "You're Gonna Hear From Me," Natalie does indeed sing the introduction to the song in a kind of talk/sing fashion. Then Jackie takes over once Daisy blossoms into the chorus of the song.

I guess I need to head down to check the mail and then maybe get started on fixing lunch a little early so I can make sure to have a generous amount of time this afternoon to complete my work project.

bk - Do you happen to know if John Randall is still with Paul Clausen?  -If it's the same "John Randall". In any case... John was the associate conductor for the tour of Copacabana back in 2000-01.  When the show came to Richmond, we were pit-mates for a week, and I just remember him being very kind and generous with his time and talent.  -It was my first stint as a "local musician".  -And I remember him being with Paul since he mentioned his partner's name, "...Yes, just like the pickle."  ;)

Probably the same John Randall.  He's single now - and VERY good looking.

ASK BK

You re-released several cast albums on VS that were recorded in Surround Sound. Were you every tempted to record an album in this format?

Never.  Doesn't really interest me at all.

Last night I saw "Three Men and A Baby Grand" salute the The Rat Pack.

Lee Lessack (Founder of LML records), Brian Lane Green and John Boswell. It was a wonderful evening of entertainment and the audience ate it up.

Keeping in mind what BK has said of "Thru Line" for cabaret acts, I think it was lacking here. Unless you knew who sung what you wouldn't know who the were paying tribute to at that moment

. Important to note they were not doing vocal impersonations, but I think for this show to work completely I think they have to present it as Las Vegas type show the Rat Pack did and go from there.

I did overhear some audience members talk during intermission saying they thought it was going to be vocal impersonations. I don't think anyone left though.

The last time I saw Brian Lane Green perform was as Spacepunk in Starmites.

When I hired them to do our LACC Cabaret summer, they were the only act I didn't like - for the reasons you mention.  First, for our show, they were underrehearsed.  Second, nothing had any context or real point, and that's just not my kind of evening.

Mr Raines has stopped by, picked up the Sheldon Harnick songbook and departed. I'm off to take a walk and run my errands.

I am considering ordering the NATALIE WOOD collection......but I am not interested in the lackluster SEX AND THE SINGLE GIRL.....which I don't like, although I know the love expressed for it here recently, that's fine....and I already have GYPSY.....

And I am thinking about also ordering THE SILVER CHALICE.......but the total for the two would be almost $60 no matter where or how they are ordered....

I am considering....

I was a tad disappointed in the Wood set - none of the transfers are stellar, I'm afraid.  Daisy Clover has decent color, but is not nearly sharp enough.  Sex And The Single Girl is pale.  Gypsy IS a better transfer of the earlier DVD.  Cash McCall is not a great film.  I haven't watched Bombers B-52 yet, but I understand THAT transfer is ropey.  And Splendor looks okay but not great.

Of the Newman set, I've only watched The Outrage - which I liked.  I'm now watching When Time Ran Out - a stinker, but the transfer, especially for Warners, is great - perfect color.  Will they LEARN from that?  Absolutely not.  In this transfer, Mr. Newman's blue eyes are BLUE.  Compare and contrast with Warners' absolutely wretched transfer of Harper, where his eyes are a pale gray.

My work session starts at eleven, which means that given the rain and LA drivers, I'll have to be out of here by ten-thirty.
