Finished watching an absolutely and horrifyingly unfunny "comedy" mockumentary called Pittsburgh.  Talk about misguided.

PAGE 4 GILLIGAN'S ISLAND DANCE

Wow, they really look like the original cast!

Just writing about Bob Denver on my blog today.  We did PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM at the Mansion Dinner Theatre in Odessa, Texas, eons ago.

Was it DR DtM who asked about the violin fingering double for John Garfield in HUMORESQUE.

Anyway, Cary Grant's harp playing in The Bishop's Wife was a double exposure/process screen shot, I think.

Oscar Levant wrote in one of his books, that when filming on HUMERESQUE - The difficult violin technique was done in a tight shot, with one violinist handling the bow and another the fingering - their arms thrust through a specially built tuxedo....and he played a dummy piano while a famous female pianist played the notes offscreen so that he could keep time....  After a couple of shots, Levant stood up and announced:  "Jesus Christ, we sound great.  The five of us ought to go out on a concert tour!"

So MR BK is listening to a score that has a lot of talking.....that's exactly the way I hear EVERY cd I play at my house.

What an interesting evening I've had tonight.

I began by watching an episode of NCIS from the second season box set. NCIS stumbles on a Mafia body dump filled with corpses. Not much mystery but a fun episode.

Next I watched KING BABY, the Jim Gaffigan comedy special that premieres tomorrow night on Comedy Central before the DVD (with extended footage) comes out on Tuesday.

It was very funny. I like his reserved, quiet kind of clean stand-up. He doesn't eat the audience or go for the jugular like some other comics do.

He does five or six minutes on just the topic of bacon, and it's hysterical. I thoroughly enjoyed the set.

Then I watched the bonus features on the disc. This included three episodes from his animated web series and four episodes of his faux-nature series.

There were several interviews (one was a half hour with an XM-Sirius radio/video DJ), and a series of comic promos for his last two stand-up tours sponsored by Comedy CEntral.

Much of this stuff was very entertaining to watch.

Afterwards, I came upstairs and wrote up the review, but I didn't post it since I was on a timetable trying to time viewing perfectly to tonight's figure skating coverage.

When I went back down, I had time to watch one more NCIS episode, this one concerning attempts on the life of a female marine and her family. I figured out the murderer (well, the surprise one) before the identity was revealed. Good show for the regulars, especially Tony (Michael Weatherly).

Then I watched the finals of the ladies' figure skating world championship. Rachel Flatt was able to skate her way into fifth place thanks to a good performance from her and mediocre to poor performances from two of the ladies in the top tier. The lovely South Korean skater blew the rest of the group away, however, making it not much of a contest. Still I enjoyed it.

I was FURIOUS with NBC for not showing Alissa Cizny's free skate, especially since they commented that she had done so well. (She came up from 14th to 11th place.) And, the show had 10 minutes to spare at the end where Dick Button and Michelle Kwan had to improvise comments just to fill in time. Alissa's performance could have been shown then.

Just splurged a little at Border's with my 40% off coupon and the storewide 30% off sale (though someone just posted to CASTRECL that in their neck of the woods it's 40% storewide).  The CD collection is pretty lamentable now, but I found some old Riverside things that I got for around $8 a pop, plus I picked up some of the Glenn Gould Columbia stuff on a lark and some Bach just because it was there.  :)

On the Warner's Archive titles, I get the MOD listings, those are Movies on Demand.  But what does the EST-MOD label mean?

I started watching MAIN PYAAR KYUN KIYA, a 2005 comedy that is just too awful for words. I am going to skip the rest of the film and just watch the musical numbers...it does have some good songs.

I was thinking of you not once, but twice, today, Mike.  I'm reviewing the BD of The Story of India, the recent PBS doc with Michael Wood.  Lots of Bollywood film clips, used ironically at times.  But I also got the BD of Saawariya as my first freebie from Sony Rewards.  I had reviewed the SD-DVD ages ago but had gotten rid of it in the meantime.  The BD looks fabulous, but it has a really funny English soundtrack--instead of a dubbed version, it's people reading the subtitles while the original Hindi soundtrack still plays in the background.  IIRC, the DVD only had the original soundtrack.

I've done the notes and now have three hours to relax and do nothing, as I'm not in the mood to watch a DVD.

Or...I could just post the order that I had saved!

ACT ONE (order according to the booklet essay):

1. Overture (1)
2. We're in the Money / Pennies from Heaven (2)
3. If You Were the Only Boy (in the World) (3)

4. Broadway Baby [1]
5. No One Is Alone [2]
6. Sooner or Later [3]

7. Unexpected Song (4)
8. I Never Thought I'd Break (7)
9. Other Lady (6)
10. The Hills of Shiloh / Faithless Love (5)

11. Making Love Alone [4]
12. Time Heals Everything [5]
13. Raining in My Heart [6]
14. Some People [7]

ACT TWO:

1. (They Asked Me Why) I Believe in You (8)
2. Johanna [8]
3. Happiness [9]
4. Hello Little Girl / Any Moment [10]
5. There Won't Be Trumpets [11]

6. Later (9)
7. You Could Drive a Person Crazy [12]
8. Not a Day Goes By [13]

9. With So Little To Be Sure Of (10)
10. Children Will Listen (11)

11. Being Alive [14]
12. Move On [15]

13. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (12)

The songs in italics are from the first CD and the songs in BOLD are from the 2nd CD.  The numbers in the brackets or parentheses are the track numbers from the respective CDs.  As you can see on the first disc, starting after "Unexpected Song," the CD reversed the song order as they were listed in the article.  I don't know if the article listed them in the wrong order or if they really switched the order for the CD.  Either way, I kept those songs in the CD order for my complete version:

7. Unexpected Song (4)
8. The Hills of Shiloh / Faithless Love (5)
9. Other Lady (6)
10. I Never Thought I'd Break (7)

Thank you for taking the time to post this. Very kind of you.

I didn't quite do Earth Hour. I left one light on so I could read.  I did turn off the TV though. I don't think people here did it. When I looked outside there were lots of lights on

Our Borders is also cutting our cd and dvd stock dramatically.  I believe we'll be one of the stores carrying basically the top twenty-five.  :(

PITTSBURGH, the mockumentary is, as far as THE MUSIC MAN is concerned, a documentary; the rest is dreadfully unfunny, but, as a Pittsburgher, the on location shooting is fabulous.

I wish I were in NYC to see FINIAN'S RAINBOW.

I watched the Blu-Ray of DR. NO tonight.  Wow.

It's been four years to the day that dad died.

I'm singing a memorial service tomorrow morning. ("Because He Lives" and "Precious Lord, Take My Hand").

A luncheon for thirty-PLUS people will follow at our house.

I finished reading The Soloist tonight.  It was a very good book and it was great to read it right after seeing Mr. Ayers and Mr. Lopez on 60 minutes

FINIAN'S RAINBOW in a word: spectacular.

What a brilliant piece of whimsy and social commentary. The idiot poster on AllThatChat who complained the book was "creaky" once again showed what small minds adolescent know-it-alls reared on too much of the new school of musicals possess. I'd kill to see a new show with the wit, bite, commentary and fantastic score of FINIAN's RAINBOW. The only drawback was the usually wonderful Mr Philip Bosco who failed rather spectacularly as the bigoted senator who must become a black man to find his humanity. Surely they saw better character actors for the Huey Long role? I think Walter Bobbie might have been fantastic casting. He's funny.

Otherwise, a great cast and topnotch direction from Warren Carlyle, who is - I think - the real thing at Encores! and not a fraud like Susan Shulman or Kathleen Marshall.
