Good evening! I woke up this morning and the rain was gone, so...today was window well day. there is a window well on the west side of my house that's over 8 feet long. The previous owners had two boards over it and the windows in the basement were blocked off with foam and curtains. I decided it was time to fix that. I have two other window wells on the east side of the house that needed some work too, so...
I took the wood off the window well on the west side of the house, got out the shovel and dug down a few inches below the window and then put rock in the wells to just below the windows for drainage - I did the same thing to the other wells. (10 bags of rock - this was an upper body work out day)
Then I decided i wanted window well covers, but they don't make them in the sizes I need and the last time I special ordered smaller ones, it was well over $100 each. So, I bought a few sheets of plexiglass and cut it to fit. I was able to fit it in the gap between the bricks over the window well so there is enough slope for the rain to run off and then I held them in place with metal stakes. It worked and the total cost for all three window wells was less than $100. I was also able to dump the dirt I dug out of the wells in two holes where trees were take out last year.
The big basement room now has natural light. What a treat! The view is the inside of the window well, so I bought some rice paper window film and will put that on the window so that light can come in but the view isn't so ugly. The cats won't be pleased, but they'll get over it.
The bad news is, I now want to prime and paint the paneling in that room - then I'll need to carpet or tile that room....
