Then the studios began crying about lower DVD sales - and when did that crying start?  When they thrust HD and Blu on the market.  They shot themselves in the foot, frankly.

I would actually be surprised if the Blu-ray market is anywhere significant enough to have caused sales drops in DVDs.  From what I've read, it was a combination of Netflix-type outlets and downloads with all the gimcrack machines that were gobbled up despite their costs of hundreds of dollars each.  Young folks can download movies on their PHONES, ferpity'ssakes.  WHY, you may ask, would anyone download a movie on a phone?  Because they CAN, I suppose.  Add to that an enormous number of PC downloads and you have sales figures dropping considerably.

That HD (which is not a sudden invention...we've been avoiding it for YEARS) and Blu-ray happened about the same time as downloading and disposable rentals came along does not, IMO, mean that Blu-ray or HD has any responsibility for the decline in DVD sales.  Blu-ray might have had a larger share of the market, it's arguable, if the war with HD-DVD had not happened.  Toshiba introduced HD-DVD first into the marketplace and then, for some unfathomably dumb reason, stagnated with it after Blu-ray was introduced.  By the time HD-DVD was ready to gear up again, Blu-ray had taken hold and fired up imaginations of a large group of influential people. Sony was brilliant in putting Blu-ray playing capability into its PS3 game machines.  Had Toshiba done that with the X-Box-360, we'd be watcing HD-DVDs right now.

HD-DVDs and Blu-ray discs are, to my eyes, exactly the same in terms of quality.  HD looks as good on one as it does on the other.  HD-DVD might have been able to upgrade to compete with sound quality and storage eventually had Toshiba managed to maintain its hold on Warner Brothers.  Studios were moving toward HD-DVD when WB insisted on doing both and when Paramount switched exclusively to HD-DVD.  What happened next is anyone's guess, but mine is that Sony paid out piles and piles of millions of dollars to gain the "trust" of executives at Warner Brothers that caused them to announce Blu-ray exclusivity two years ago.  That was the end of that.

I do not believe the Blu-ray marketplace is draining sales from the DVD marketplace to any measurable extent.  Other factors, I'm certain, are in play.

LOL!  We've not yet seen a Blu-ray disc "maxed-out" in terms of special material even though the main battle cry was always that the Blu-ray disco could hold more information.

If the 5D can hold the equivalent of 2,000 DVDs, that would make it possible to put out a disc containing every movie musical, for instance.  Wouldn't ya love to see the retail price tag on that set!!!   :D

AND THE TOD

For Those That have Blu-Ray What are your Three favorite Blu Ray Discs?
Wall-E
How the West Was Won

and Casino Royale.

Pogue: Der B and I have pretty much stuck to our rule, that we'll only purchase Blu-Ray titles that we don't already own on DVD.  Replacing titles that we earlier collected on LaserDisc or VHS is fine, but replacing every freaking title in our collection is out of the question.  And there are titles that frankly don't really call for the Blu-Ray experience.  (The exceptions to this have been American in Paris, Casino Royale, and Sleepy Hollow, and der B cheated on the latter because it came in a two-pack with Cloverfield, which he insisted was the film he was really buying - insert raspberry here.  Our DVD of Casino Royale we gave to der B's son-in-law, which cleared the way for the Blu-Ray edition.  I'm still not sure how I let him get away with upgrading AiP.)

I have to figure out something to say about GISELLE.  I am just not a big ballet fan and those reviews are the hardest for me.  I guess I'll blather on about Adam for a while.  ;)

One of the stupidest ballets ever! The score isn't particularly good, either. The first good one was COPPELIA, then Tschaikovsky.

Speaking, as we are, of Blu-ray discs:

I was more than thrilled with the quality of the newish BD of "Grease" (The Bobby Rydell Edition).  Why it's called the "Bobby Rydell Edition" is beyond me, but it is called that.

Happily, it's not in a case shaped like the head of Bobby Rydell, nor is it awash in Rydell artwork.

The insert is quite fetching, as is the film which has never looked better to these eyes.

The movie is great entertainment.  All the singing is studio work, complete with reverb, but it all works.  Everything is perfectly synched.  Never for one minute do I think I'm hearing an actual "live" performance, but the sounds is so deliciously perfect I don't care.   I'm "hopelessly devoted" to this film as a great movie-movie musical.

I have also not taken that next step to Blue-Ray, but only because, so far, no movies that I really want have come out on Blue-Ray.

Blue-Ray machines are still too spendy, and I require an All-region player so as to be able to watch my DVDs from Europe.

When the price is right, I will buy!

I'm in agreement with Mikey! A region-free blu-ray DVD player is currently beyond my means, and then I'd have to buy a new television. Oy!

If only that damned property would sell in Ohio! or my lottery win came through.

More than likely there would still be one movie per disc but also one huge-ass Leonard Maltin documentary on the film.

(By that I mean that the documentary would be huge-ass, not Leonard Maltin.  I have never seen Leonard Maltin's ass and cannot say whether it is huge or not.)

So little time, too much to do.

First we had the audit/inventory at the store.

This was immediately followed by Memorial Day Weekend Preparations, which was immediately followed by Memorial Day Weekend and the MOBS OF PEOPLE!!!

To which we can add Der B's Daughter and Family Coming Down For the Weekend And Needing Attention.  (I really needed that - not.)

And next weekend is Race Weekend (Nascar up in Dover, which still affects us - Nascar is like that).

And immediately after that comes Dad and Stepmom Come for Their First Visit Since We Moved to Delaware.  (Yes, that is big.  Very big.)

Baking bread and making pasta are the only fun things I've had time for, of late.

Time to head on down to the Farmer's Market - lucky we can squeeze it in!

My least favorite thing to do is proof and correct music charts.  It's really slow work for me since I'm not a schooled musician.  And, for example, in the title song, which is not a difficult song, there are huge errors in every single bar - once one verse is fixed however, then it's easy to conform the rest, but I found it really annoying and it took me forty-five minutes to correct that one chart.  While I sometimes don't sing precisely enough on the demo it isn't THAT off.

I'm only up to the fourth song and there are a LOT more.  A couple of them have been easy, though, and I'm hoping he got more accurate as he went along.

If you hired a more competent copyist, you wouldn't be having these problems.  Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, say n'more.

Of course, I typically refuse to do stuff in Finale, which is probably what you require.  Such a stupid, stupid program (IMHO, of course).

For ballerinas, the role of Giselle is equivalent to an actor's Hamlet, but I find it all very silly, with the Prince/Duke/Whatever disguised as a peasant to court a pretty village maiden. The village maiden is clearly playing with half a deck, which should have been obvious to him, goes insane and kills herself when she learns of his general assholism, like swearing love to her while being engaged already to a local society girl. Then her ghost  comes back and saves the jerk from the Willys, evil ghosts of dead virgins!

I like ballet but GISELLE is pretty stupid. Which version are you reviewing?

The good part of Finale, and why I now insist this stuff be done in the computer, is the ease of changing the keys without having to recopy everything by hand.

DR Jennifer - As for "Y&R"... Well... As far as age differences go... Have you been watching "The Bold & The Beautiful" lately?  There's some truly cringe-worthy coupling going on there right now.  And, sadly(?), it looks likes it has been set up to induce cringing.  ::)
