THE CAPER FILM PART 2

Early examples of films which elaborately depict a heist are the three screen versions of the play Alias Jimmy Valentine, the first two made in the silent era (1915 and 1920).

hroughout the 1930's, thievery and scams were present in such films as Raffles, Outside the Law and Ninotchka.
The classical Film noir period of the 1940s and 1950s brought the genre to fame, by focusing more explicitely on the heists themselves, with such films as John Huston's Asphalt Jungle of 1950, Jules Dassin's Rififi of 1955, Jean-Pierre Melville's Bob le flambeur of 1956, or Stanley Kubrick's The Killing, also of 1956.

Even to contemporary Hollywood, the genre still remains promising, as the 2001 and 2003 remakes of Ocean's Eleven and The Italian Job show.

Examples of the variety of directions the heist film can take would include the comedy heist film such as Topkapi, the western heist film such as The War Wagon, the war/heist film such as Kelly's Heroes and numerous spy movies and television programs which had heist-like plots, most notably Mission: Impossible and It Takes a Thief.

CAPER FILMS

Here are some more films I like

The Thomas Crown Affair with Steve McQueen (another film I can watch over and over)
Kelly's Heroes
Usual Suspects
Entrapment
Anderson Tapes
Die Hard
The Italian job (Original)

and a couple of films I am not sure people even know about

The Silent Partner (Christopher Plummer and Elliot Gould)
The Spanish Prisoner  Davis Mamet (Steve Martin)

Are the Pink Panther movies considered caper films? They robberies are usually a small part of the plot. (The get the main story going)

here is a list of Caper films.

Many I have never heard about and wouldn't consider them caper films (Pink Panther films are listed here)

Is "Gambit" a caper film?  If it is, I'd pick that...since it's the first movie that I can think of.

According to IMDb:  MICHAEL CAINE was hot after appearing in THE IPCRESS FILE and SHIRLEY MacLAINE grabbed him for her leading man in GAMBIT. It's a highly entertaining and very clever crime caper and is Caine's first American film....

It's a caper film. :)

I'll leave it to DAW to post a picture of a caper.

der Brucer

Then, again...

Clearly, with capers like these, any caper flick would also be a budding romance.

Most definitely it is, and with some stunning twists along the way. It's one of my favorites.

Good morning!

Not very cool this morning, so the house stays closed up all day today, and I suspect it will for the foreseeable future now that summer is upon us.

My work project today is on the easy side; I'll be rewatching LAST YEAR IN MARIENBAD only this time on Blu-ray. With all the bonus features already viewed (just have to check to see if the resolution is HD or SD), I just have to watch the movie itself again to ascertain the video and audio quality and then tweak the DVD review with these updates.

Good morning, all! I've been awake for some  puttering about the apartment. I had my oatmeal and coffee, I played at tge computer, and I listened to the new Ohio Light Opera recording of THE CABARET GIRL; I wish they were better. Listening to John McGlinn's Library of Congress concert of THE CITY CHAP with a solid orchestra and good Broadway singers, like George Dvorsky, Judy Kaye, and Jeanne Lehman, and then hearing the Ohio Light Opera is like going from heaven to hell: scrappy orchestra, too many student singers with little personality and worse acting chops.

Today, NYPL and my gospel chart.

I did not enjoy the show when I saw it on Broadway. I hope you have a better time.

Now I'm going to pay a bill or two and then head downstairs to check the mail and think about getting something started cooking for lunch.
