I got four episodes watched, all that were on disc one. There is a bonus feature on disc one that I didn't watch yet, but I'd have to take notes with it, and I didn't feel like writing, so I stopped there. Hopefully I can pick up with it later this afternoon.

TOD:

I guess the first novelty song I can remember was THE CHIPMUNK SONG. Or maybe QUIET VILLAGE which wasn't quite a novelty song but still very unusual.

Just a reminder to you, bk, about HD channels.

I don't know how they work on dish, but on digital cable, we have both the standard definition channels and the corresponding high definition channels located in a completely different area of the digital numbering system.

e.g. local CBS affiliate is channel 2 on the cable listings. The high definition version of CBS is channel 225.

I have had friends who were tuned to regular channels and disappointed HD didn't look better. They had no idea HD was on another part of the numbered tier.

This also goes for cable channels like TNT, USA, or FX. Completely separate listings in different areas of the channel numbered tiers.

Well, I think I'll head down to brush my teeth and make sure I'm going to be ready to leave when the time comes. My doctor's office is only 10 minutes away.

My father used to sing me to sleep with "Mairzy Oats" and "Shrimp Boats are A-Comin'."
My favorite novelty song, I guess, would be "At The Codfish Ball."

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And I'm not going to Philly today. :-\

That's just as well, DR Jose--the weather here is going to be on the crappy side today.

TOD:

My favorite growing up was "They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha! Ha!" by Napoleon XIV.  It was the kind of song that was appropriate to start singing in a number of situations and everyone could join in.  It also seemed to get a great deal of radio play in two to three year cycles.

Thursday morning greetings!  I slept late today and my agenda includes visiting my mother.

TOD - my father used to sing:

While the organ peeled potatoes,
Lard was rendered by the choir.
While the sexton rang the dish rag,
Someone set the church on fire.

“Holy Smoke,” the preacher shouted,
And in the rush he lost his hair.
Now his head resembles heaven,
For there is no parting there.

I was stunned to hear Garrison Keillor sing it during a "silly songs" segment on A Prairie Home Companion.

Novelty favorites include just about any top 10 hit by Ray Stevens, including "Gitarzan" and "Little Sheba."  There was also "Alley Oop" sung by the Hollywood Argyles (and later the Beach Boys and Sha Na Na)...lots of fun!  "Spiders and Snakes" by Jim Stafford is also a fun song.

And Brian Hyland's version of "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie (Yellow Polka Dot Bikini)" was a lot of fun, along with Sheb Wooley's version of "Purple People Eater".

And then there's Peggy Lee's "Is That All There Is?"   Surely a novelty song.

And Rosemary Clooney had her share of them, too.

Good Morning, once again!

I went ahead and walked down the street to "Jumbo Hamburger" (Since 1968), sat down at the counter and had one of my favorite breakfasts: corned beef hash, two eggs over easy, home fries and toast.

I've always wondered if some sort of study has been done on the minds of line-cooks - whether in a greasy-spoon diner, or even some high-end restaurants.  I always marvel at how they can keep track of all the orders being called out to them without writing anything down.

In any case, it was a good, cheap breakfast, and I also got a chance to read the New York Times not on the web.

I'm glad I went over there too.  And the three main exhibitions that are currently running were both educational and entertaining.

Another novelty song I'm fond of I learned from a Brit during my NATO tour in Naples, Italy, back in the 1970s:

"Lloyd George Knew My Father", sung to the tune of "Onward, Christian Soldiers!"

"Lloyd George knew my Father,
Father knew Lloyd George,
Lloyd George knew my father,
Father knew Lloyd George!"

"Lloyd George knew my Father,
Father knew Lloyd George,
Lloyd George knew my father,
Father knew Lloyd George!"

"Lloyd George knew my Father,
Father knew Lloyd George,
Lloyd George knew my father,
Father knew Lloyd George!"

I believe it might more appropriately be called "a pub song."

Sorry to add to the "litany of woe" a certain DR complained about, but I could use some major vibage--I have had a tender knee for months, which I just racked up to age and the fact that I walk so many miles for exercise each day.  Well, something major happened last night.  Suddenly I literally could not bend my right knee without an amazingly sharp and painful twinge shooting down the right side of my calf.  I got no sleep last night and am off to an emergency appointment with my clinic.  This could not have happened at a worse time.

TOD:

Popular novelty songs from my youth include DEAD SKUNK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD (very appropriate for where I lived in Southern Oregon) CONVOY, THE STREAK and DISCO DUCK, but none of them are my favorites.

Likely the the first I remember hearing would be TIP TOE THROUGH THE TULIPS.

My favorites would be MONSTER MASH, THE NAME GAME, and SURFIN BIRD.
