I had a delightful phone call this afternoon from my old car pool mate from my teaching days. We drove together for about 20 years, but he retired three years before I did, and since I retired, we had drifted out of touch. We talked about 30 minutes and caught up on a lot of news.

I began my afternoon watching last night's excellent episode of LEVERAGE while I ate lunch. Beth Broderick was the primary guest star, and I really enjoyed the episode (though I did think Timothy Hutton playing a three-star general wasn't all that convincing.)

So, I'm gathering that via HDMI any digital station automatically adjusts for the ratio that's correct.  And I gather that TCM isn't digital and therefore stretches the picture unless you specifically select pillarbox.  Does that sound right, oh experts?

Next, I watched the bnonus feature on the first disc of NCIS. It was about the company who makes the cadavers and injured bodies for the show. Quite fascinating actually, and I thoroughly enjoyed taking a tour of the facility.

It is a digital channel but is not high def so your general set-up for your regular channels will carry over for it, too, Yes, it should pillarbox most of the movies it shows and windowbox the widescreen ones.

Also, about MGM-HD. It's great, but sometimes they go horribly wrong as when the cropped ThE RED SHOES to make it a widescreen movie. It wasn't stretched; it was CROPPED, and it was horrible beyond belief.

And yet, HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN in HD was done properly.

Between the phone call and getting back home late due to waiting an agonizing long time at the phramacy to get my perscriptions filled, I did manage to get two more NCIS episodes watched. One was a REALLY good mystery that fooled me even though I was seeing it for a second time.

I did have time to squeeze in today's Y&R. Rafe and Adam were both on and had a bit of a scene at the end of the episode. The previews show more between them tomorrow.

Good morning, all! I had a horrible night of poor sleep, but I reckon that means perhaps a good one tonight. I'm really sick of all this crap. My first jaunt this morning is to Pearl Paint on Canal Street to exchange some tape and then a meeting at Toyland. After that, it's back here for more work and some phone calls on THE MOST HAPPY FELLA.

Thanks for the good wishes, folks. I am slightly encouraged after seeing the doctor today. Oh, the diagnosis was upsetting, but if it means some relief, I don't care even if I end up being one of the 10% who need an operation to correct the problem.

I have (he thinks) a herniated disc in my neck. And MRI will reveal much, and I'm waiting for the call to schedule that to be done.

Meanwhile, I've started on steroids for the pain.

Oy.  Maybe we should re-acronym this site MRI.

Depending on your television, it's sometimes easier to select "Native" on your DirecTV box, that will automatically adjust to whatever AR the station is broadcasting in.  Everything on DirectTV is digital, that has nothing to do with the AR of the broadcast, simply the mode of its delivery.  You will notice that TNT for example does regularly stretch programming.

That said, however, some tv's handle DirectTV's "native" option differently.  That's what worked on my first HD TV, a Sharp Aquos.  With this stupid friggin' Sylvania I have, I selected 1080p, the highest res available, and everything else adjusted automatically if it was lower on the res scale.

My mother loved novelty songs, so we learned them direct from World War 2. The ones she sang the most were "Mairzy Doats" and the one about the thee 'iddle fiddies who swam and swam all over the dam.  From the 50s, I remember the big Sheb Wooley ones: "Chipmunk sng," "Witch Doctor" and "Purple People Eater," but the one I really loved was the "Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini."

Does anyone remember a commercial from a couple of years ago (I forget what for...some weight-loss product, I think...and it might've just been regional), where they used the "Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" song?  However, they rerecorded the song with these lyrics:

"She wore an itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini
That she wore for the first time today."

Seriously!  That's what they sang!  It makes absolutely no grammatical sense!

The correct lyrics are, "It was an itsy bitsy...bikini that she wore..."

DR MattH, I had 2 herniated discs in my neck pressing on my spinal cord in 1999. By the time my HMO sent me for the MRI in October, I had seen every specialist they could recommend over a period of two months while I stumbled and became more incapacitated till I could hardly walk. When I would swallow food, the esophagus expanded, the disc pressed on my spinal cords and my leg twitched. Meanwhile, I couldn't hold a pencil, make a fist, or move without great difficulty. My surgery was Dec. 7, followed by six weeks of physical therapy, and I've been doing okay, although I suspect some of my current problems are from more herniated discs.

I am so happy you've finally been diagnosed.

The plumber is here, he has been for awhile. I knew there would be problems when I saw how close the waste pipe is to the bottom of the sink.  So he's putting in a new waste pipe, adding a vent I didn't have and got a "special basket"  lol.  I know that means more expensive.  I have no idea what this is going to cost me, but I've had drain problems a number of times over the past year or two, so if this fixes that, it will be worth it.

Plus, he'll be done today and I will have a working sink and a working garbage disposal!!!

Guess who's cooking this weekend

I remember it George.  That always bugged me too.  Some friends of my parents had the piano player roll of itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini, so we used to play and sing it when we went over there.

I loved our player piano and was kind of bummed when my mom sold it.  Has anyone else had one?

To make room for the plumber to cut the waste pipe (which was amazingly clean)  I had to move all the boxes out of the storeroom and put them somewhere else.  The good news is, I was planning to organize this room as soon as I finish the kitchen project so I have somewhere to neatly put some of the clutter around here.  Now I've got a good start.

Thank you, DR Elmore. I really hope I won't have to go the operation route, but honestly anything is preferable to what I've been enduring. Yes, I also have Vicodin along with the steroids.

And thanks to others like DRs George, FJL, and Arnold who sent good wishes. Much appreciated.
